As a person who spend a few years in academia, I was often surprised at the research programs, etc. Funding was always a problem, it's even more so now with Brexit on the horizon.

As a person who spent a few years in academia, surely you know better than to go of a newspaper report about research?

The research was, in part, testing previous research claims that pain and orgasm related facial expressions were the same - a theory which calls into question the role facial expressions play in communication during times of intensity. There work suggests that theory is wrong and that actually expressions of intense pain or pleasure aren’t indistinguishable. It’s only one small part of trying to work out how we communicate, but I wouldn’t call it a waste.
