We've been looking for somewhere to rent and found a lovely old house. Everything it lovely except it doesn't have a shower, just a bath.

We asked the landlord if they would install a shower if we paid and they said no as it was an older style property they were worried about the implications.

We all shower everyday and rarely have a bath. AIBU to think a shower is a necessity for a family?

I’m the total opposite....don’t have a bath in our house only a massive shower and an en-suite with a shower. It suites us tho so I suppose it’s what you want. You could always buy a shower adapter for the taps as a compromise.

SuchAToDo · 13/10/2018 22:10

I've been there before...(where the house has only had a bath)...

What we did was hang a shower rail and shower curtain along the length if the bath and use a shower head that connects to bath taps (you can put them on and off your tap)...

Another house we had, had a bath and we had an electric shower installed so if we wanted a shower we stood up in the bath...maybe that could be an option too?

averageisgood · 13/10/2018 22:13

I did as a student, got an attachment for the taps. don't think I could do it again though

My first flat was one with only a bath. I coped by using an empty 2L coke bottle to wash my hair and having a good wash in the sink if I couldn't be arsed to spend the time it took to fill and have a bath.

I was only 21 though, so it felt like a big adventure. I was glad to leave though and move somewhere with a shower.

springydaff · 13/10/2018 22:14

Absolutely wouldn't want to live without a shower.

I've not had a bath in about 20 odd years and I hope I never have one again for the rest of my life.

It's bad enough getting wet without it being expensive and taking forever.

PippilottaLongstocking · 13/10/2018 22:19

I grew up without a shower, if you wanted a quick hair wash you did it in the sink with a jug. Had my first ever shower when I was about 14 and didn’t live in a house with a shower til I was 20!

mumsastudent · 13/10/2018 22:24

Asian way of having shower: large bucket (those ones you use for gardens with two handles are good) and a jug. Fill bucket with warm/hot water & stand or kneel in bath and pour jug of water over self. We have done this when hot water isn't working by pouring water from kettle over cold water in bucket...it works -I don't like baths as much as showers

Godimsounimaginative · 13/10/2018 22:31

We haven't showered in about 2yr. DP is supposed to be redoing the sealant round the bath, he started the job when we moved in and removed the stuff thst was there but never got round to finishing it! I prefer baths, I get cold in the shower and have to have the water scalding.

Our bills are pretty low, I always thought showers used more water as you heat this water up and then use it for a second before it drains away.

Armadillostoes · 13/10/2018 22:43

I love baths, but would second the 80s style rubber attachment to go over you-would that be a compromise?

Armadillostoes · 13/10/2018 22:43

Erm, over taps not you. Evil autocorrect
!

Hidingtonothing · 13/10/2018 22:46

Last 2 houses I’ve lived in (so past 11 years in total) have only had baths, I hate it but we cope. Both baths have been too awkwardly positioned to just stick a tap attachment on (no easy way to fit shower screen/curtain and only splash backs tiled) and we just haven’t had the money to have it done properly. It’s finally on the horizon now and I can’t wait, doing without is perfectly manageable but baths are more hassle, take longer and I just really bloody miss showers Sad

straightjeans · 14/10/2018 01:11

Fill the sink with soapy water and use a flannel.

Redglitter · 14/10/2018 01:15

I wouldn't consider a house with no shower. I couldn't stand having to have baths every day

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 14/10/2018 01:19

A shower is the only thing that makes me feel human in the morning!

SecretWitch · 14/10/2018 01:21

Our crumbling old Victorian has but one loo. We have a claw foot tub, no shower. We have the rubber attachment thing for those who wish to be sprayed down. We’ve been in our home for ten years.

GreenLantern53 · 14/10/2018 01:24

I live in a council house so shower is not standard unless i fit one myself with i cant afford. we are a family of 5, its fine.

Rebecca36 · 14/10/2018 01:27

You can buy a shower with rubber things that fit over the taps, and a mixer. Not a permanent thing, can be removed easily. I had one years ago from Argos and it was good. Only problem is, as it's not an electric shower, if someone runs water or flushes lavatory while another person is having a shower, it goes cold and then boiling hot. Best to say in advance you are going for a shower.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 14/10/2018 01:43

Do you go to the gym / sports centre frequently? You could shower there but have a bath on days you don't go.
