To ask how would you survive without a shower?

We've been looking for somewhere to rent and found a lovely old house. Everything it lovely except it doesn't have a shower, just a bath.

We asked the landlord if they would install a shower if we paid and they said no as it was an older style property they were worried about the implications.

We all shower everyday and rarely have a bath. AIBU to think a shower is a necessity for a family?

I hate sitting about soaking in a bath, so I'd probably just run a small one, get washed and rinsed quickly then get out, or use a bowl of water and a jug to wash and rinse myself in the empty bath (I think they call this a bucket wash?), or you can get a shower hose or camping shower, but be careful about the surrounding area because the tiling and seals might not be suitable.
But it's up to you. If showering is really important to you then this probably isn't the house for you.

ferrier · 13/10/2018 21:40

I wouldn’t consider it. I hate baths. I’d start to smell within a few days.

You'd only smell if you didn't bath!

SquigglePigs · 13/10/2018 21:41

When our shower broke in our old house we were only without it for 2 weeks and it drove me mad - particularly washing my hair. I wouldn't be happy living somewhere with no shower.

Puffinhead · 13/10/2018 21:42

If the house has a water meter then yes you may notice higher water bills.

Puffinhead · 13/10/2018 21:43

Sorry, stating the obvious there!

HalloumiGus · 13/10/2018 21:43

What implications are they worried about? You've offered to pay. I personally wouldn't want to be without a shower.

BewareOfDragons · 13/10/2018 21:45

I wouldn't ... what a pain. Need my shower!

BitchQueen90 · 13/10/2018 21:45

I couldn't be without a shower. I hate baths, they're a right pain when you're in a rush.

Spotify · 13/10/2018 21:46

I wouldn't mind as my kids are all still under 9 but I'd worry about the water bill.

Thenewdoctor · 13/10/2018 21:46

I have a bath and a shower attachment for washing my hair.

It just means you have a quick functional bath rather than a wallow but it’s grand.

yorkshireyummymummy · 13/10/2018 21:47

I think it’s odd in this day and age not to have a shower in a house.

I wouldn’t like to live in a house without the choice of bath or shower.
Peoples expectations are different now - we have changed massively since I was a child in the 70/80s. We now expect a downstairs loo and at least one bathroom upstairs don’t we - I couldn’t bear the thought of a guest/workman using my upstairs bathroom for a wee!!
I know - I’m spoilt now.
We have a bathroom each and a guest one and that’s the way I like it.

So OP- no, no you are NOT BU to expect a family home to have a shower as a minimum.

Bbbbbbbb2017 · 13/10/2018 21:48

I only have a bath. It works and jsut a nice excuse for a nice long soak

Thenewdoctor · 13/10/2018 21:49

I don’t have a downstairs loo either. Just one bathroom.

I’m odd then. (Wtf. There are millions of houses that only have one bathroom)

LuvSmallDogs · 13/10/2018 21:52

Shallowish baths using a measuring jug to rinse hair and any other body parts that aren’t submerged + sink wash every other day.Smile

Haint · 13/10/2018 21:52

Up until 4 weeks ago only one of the 11 or so houses I’ve lived in has had a shower, that one was my first student flat. We’ve just had one put in in this house after living here the 8 years.

I’m not a fan.

wentmadinthecountry · 13/10/2018 21:54

3 baths in our house. Only ever used after rugby matches. Couldn't live without the shower - can't remember when I last had a bath! Maybe in a hotel in Madrid about 4 years ago?

Glumglowworm · 13/10/2018 21:54

I grew up without a shower, only a bath, and of course we managed (parents and 2 kids)

But as an adult I only ever have showers, I don’t like baths.

I would live somewhere with only a shower. Not sure i would live somewhere with only a bath.

Thenewdoctor · 13/10/2018 21:54

I’m not convinced it’s much cheaper then the half hour long showers my ex used to have anyway.

Haint · 13/10/2018 21:55

Nah I don’t get that. That’s a miserable existence. I just have a lovely wallowy, long bath with a book —and wine— each evening. Get a rubbery hose thing so you can rinse your hair if you like but I’m not sure it’s necessary. Mine seems fine.

Thenewdoctor · 13/10/2018 21:58

I have long hair and it goes limp if it isn’t rinsed properly. But I have a rubber hose and it’s fine.

ileclerc · 13/10/2018 21:59

When our shower was out of action I had to sit in the bath and use the hose. It wasn't fun. I haven't had a bath for about 20 years. It would be a dealbreaker for me.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 13/10/2018 22:00

I only have a bath about twice a year. Couldn't live without a shower. I'd need a third hand to wash my hair with a jug!

haggisaggis · 13/10/2018 22:01

You can get bath tap shower attachments- I used one for 5 years in a flat that did not have good enough water pressure to operate a shower. Would squat in the bath and use the attachment to shower with. Worked fine. There do seem to be other removable options available now that may work. Depends how much you want the house.

LuvSmallDogs · 13/10/2018 22:03

Haint, I love a good soak too, but if you’re in a rush/having to scrape by with gas/water bills and you don’t have a shower this helps.

Luxembourgmama · 13/10/2018 22:04

Could you get one of those 80s style rubber hoses on the taps if it was the right place I'd suck it up.
