To ask how would you survive without a shower?

We've been looking for somewhere to rent and found a lovely old house. Everything it lovely except it doesn't have a shower, just a bath.

We asked the landlord if they would install a shower if we paid and they said no as it was an older style property they were worried about the implications.

We all shower everyday and rarely have a bath. AIBU to think a shower is a necessity for a family?

It’s not ideal. I am a shower person but have been forced to get used to baths (shower is broken and fixing it is a big job). I can’t leave the house without washing in the morning so have become very efficient at having super quick baths without too much water!

Natsku · 13/10/2018 21:11

I survived 6 months without a shower. No bath either. Heated up water in a cauldron and used a bucket and a scoop to wash myself a couple of times a week. It was not fun. I had really long hair too so washing my hair was a challenge.

GulliverUnravels · 13/10/2018 21:13

Our crap landlord once us for about 4 months with a broken shower. We used a bucket and jug and got along fine (though I wouldn't necessarily want to do it for years).
When I was growing up my parents had a shower head that attached to the bath taps.

Bunchofdaffodils · 13/10/2018 21:15

A cauldron, Natsku?! Really? What a wonderful image that evokes!!

Petalflowers · 13/10/2018 21:16

Can a shower be installed, over the bath, rather than a separate shower unit?

MarcieBluebell · 13/10/2018 21:18

I had no shower for a few months.

Was tiring. Running it. Getting it a hot bath isn't refreshing. I felt like I wanted to go back to bed. Plus it takes more water.

Awful.

tillytrotter1 · 13/10/2018 21:20

Much the same as the majority coped before showers became common. Do they still sell those rubber showers you push on the taps??

ForalltheSaints · 13/10/2018 21:20

I would feel unclean without a shower each morning. You can get ones that attach to taps, which I had in a house I lived in during the early 90s.

Rudgie47 · 13/10/2018 21:21

@Petalflowers , yes they can be just ask a good plumber.

Hidillyho · 13/10/2018 21:22

I wouldn’t move in. I have mobility issues and there was long periods when I just wouldn’t have been able to get in and out of the bath

purplecorkheart · 13/10/2018 21:22

Had to do one for a while in an old house. A plumber reccomded a plumbing supply store to me that had a really posh attach to the bath taps shower thing that was almost as good as a shower (very good water preasure in house). It was hard to remove from.taps though so rarely had a bath.

crazycatgal · 13/10/2018 21:23

A shower is really important to me, I need to shower every morning to feel clean. There isn't enough time to have a bath every day.

Natsku · 13/10/2018 21:24

A cauldron, Natsku?! Really? What a wonderful image that evokes!!

Cauldron is the best translation I can think for it - cast iron pot built into a brick frame with a wood fire under it to heat it. In the sauna. So rustic.

Biancadelriosback · 13/10/2018 21:24

We only had a bath for months. It was weird but got used to it!
We replaced the taps with a bath shower mixer tap and now have a great shower

IsBabyHereYet · 13/10/2018 21:25

I struggled when I had very long hair without a shower but when I cut it shorter it was fine just having a bath.

Make sure you put up a shower curtain though! Lol.

couldjustfallasleep · 13/10/2018 21:27

I would miss not having a bath more than not having a shower.
Our 2 preschoolers jump in the bath together and then I run myself one after. Never particularly deep, but gets me clean. Not noticed a rise in water bills either.

Lovemusic33 · 13/10/2018 21:27

We only have a bath, it’s tricky but we survive.

Duck90 · 13/10/2018 21:27

If I had to live without, because I couldn’t afford to I would. But you have offered to put one in, LL says no. Do you have to rent this house? Why is installing a shower such an issue for LL?

MrsStrowman · 13/10/2018 21:28

Baths take too long on a daily basis, time to run them, then bathe, I also have long thick hair and hate washing it in the bath. Shower, ten minutes, done.

NicoAndTheNiners · 13/10/2018 21:29

I wouldn’t consider it. I hate baths. I’d start to smell within a few days.

dalmatianmad · 13/10/2018 21:30

We've lived in our house for 5 years and only just had a shower fitted. I seriously wondered how we manged before!

Bearbehind · 13/10/2018 21:32

TBH I'd be more worried about the rest of the property.

People put showers in older properties all the time - I'd guess the only 'implications' are they know the plumbing is dodgy or something.

BrickByBrick · 13/10/2018 21:35

We didn't have one growing one and my parents still don't have one. They have one of the push-on tap things. I generally wash my hair over the side of the bath then 'hose' myself down in the bathtub. A proper shower mixer tap would be better though.

AntiHop · 13/10/2018 21:35

I couldn't survive without a shower. I need it to wake me up in the morning. A bath wouldn't feel right in the morning.
