I never used to go around with a water bottle, let alone, grab a cup of coffee

every time I went out.
what is it with people having to be constantly Slurping!

the world cannot cope with all the rubbish this causes.

OP posts:

People saying other things are environmentally damaging are totally missing the point. It's about making changes one thing at a time.

I think the fact that it's an "easy win" is part of the problem; people feel like their doing "their bit" by using a reusable cup and this allows them to justify their far more damaging lifestyle choices to themselves. If we're to avert a global environmental disaster everyone needs to make massive, permanent changes really soon. Reusable cups are pissing in the wind.

Lockheart · 14/10/2018 10:35

Does having a coffee cup make you look “cool and busy”? I never realised Confused

In some ways I agree with OP - the waste is too much! I have to buy tea and coffee when I’m at college for a week (no free tea or coffee at college!) but I have a reusable flask for them to fill rather than go through endless unrecyclable cups. Outside of that I never buy tea or coffee on the go - I just wait til I get home or to the office.

Everyoneiswingingit · 14/10/2018 10:37

I walk at a fair pace, don't think the coffee would end up in me, rather, on me if I drank on the go.

Lockheart · 14/10/2018 10:39

Also the local independent shop where I go when at college is more than happy to rinse the reusable cup for me. So is everywhere I’ve been. Pret and the bigger chains offer you discount if you bring a reusable cup, so they obviously expect people to bring them - and sometimes they’ll need rinsing.

Antigon · 14/10/2018 10:46

Really? Just hot water multiplied by how many customers, how many stores, how many gallon

Not very much in the scheme of things. Starbucks et al are on a drive to prove they are environmentally conscious. They're flogging their own re-usable thermal mugs. It's in their interests for customers to bring their own mugs in.

Email the HQ and they'll be quick to affirm their commitment to the environment and say their staff will be happy to rinse the mug for you.

As OftenHangry says, they'll save on the cost of the mug and bring doen the number of environmentally single use cups they sell. Win win for them. The cost of water is negligible for them.

Antigon · 14/10/2018 10:48

*save in the cost of the re-usable cup.

Also, their re-usable thermal mugs are not cheap. £10? So a good money maker for them as there'll be a good margin on each one sold.

Everyoneiswingingit · 14/10/2018 10:54

I was referring to the pot wash machine that you suggested, They have to be full before running to save on water usage. As for them rinsing, no thanks, have you seen the cloths behind the counters?

Antigon · 14/10/2018 10:56

I don't agree. I think it makes you more conscious. After the plastic bag ban, we're seeing companies ban SUPs (including my own). Now restaurants and companies are switching from plastic straws to paper ones. Councils are encouraging people to recycle with weekly collections. If you're pessimistic, nothing changes. At my workplace, now that single use cups, bottles of water, cutlery are banned, people are demanding that management go further. It's saving millions of SUP use pa in my company alone. I think it's gaining momentum.

If we're to avert a global environmental disaster everyone needs to make massive, permanent changes really soon. Reusable cups are pissing in the wind.

Do you really want to wait for the earths finite resources to run out before making changes? Because that's what you'd effectively be waiting for. Start small, work your way up.

Antigon · 14/10/2018 10:59

I was referring to the pot wash machine that you suggested, They have to be full before running to save on water usage. As for them rinsing, no thanks, have you seen the cloths behind the counters?

I'm referring to the press and hold tap, not a dishwasher. It takes 3 seconds.

They're not going to rinse with the cloth. If people are happy for Costa to rinse their cups, why does it affect you? You seem to be deliberately looking for obstacles. It's quite depressing.

Everyoneiswingingit · 14/10/2018 11:00

I think most of us are on the side of the plane. I also agree with what curlyhair said upthread. We all know the people OP was referring to, Of course there are people that need to drink on the go, people who really are that busy too. But there are those that carry cups and bottle as fashion accessories. As a mother of teens, it is a thing, as ridiculous as it seems.

Everyoneiswingingit · 14/10/2018 11:01

I'm really not anti

Everyoneiswingingit · 14/10/2018 11:01

*the planet

OftenHangry · 14/10/2018 11:06

Every coffee machine in shops have hot water button. Logically no one would wait till their cup is washed in shop's dishwasher. Also logically there is no need for cloth. Just simple rinse.

GreenandBlueButterfly · 14/10/2018 11:17

My mum hardly ever drinks and can't understand why I need to all the time. But then, her skin has always been extremely dry, she has often fainted, heart issues at an early age, and her bladder muscles are is untrained that when she drinks, she feels she needs the loo, even if nothing comes out. She's been like that all my life. I'm hoping I can avoid some of that by simply drinking water.

For everyone saying people didn't use to drink at school, work etc... Well, maybe buildings were not so hot before. My office is always hot. The London tube is boiling. The train is hot and overcrowded. If I didn't have water with me, I would arrive at work feeling completely sick.

So OP, I understand your concern for the environment, but apart from that, mind your own business and let us carry our own water.

CoughLaughFart · 14/10/2018 12:03

Really? Just hot water multiplied by how many customers, how many stores, how many gallon

Presumably if people are supposed to go and rinse their cups in the toilet sink will be using hot water to do so too?

CoughLaughFart · 14/10/2018 12:09

Also really bad form to publicly name a person and where her works. If that's the company policy , that is really not nice Loon

I can just see the hoards of angry villagers heading to Pret on the Strand with pitchforks and flaming torches now Hmm

Everyoneiswingingit · 14/10/2018 13:20

Cough I was referring to the pot wash machine that a pp suggested to wash one cup-not good for water saving.

One of my DC works as a Barista and I wouldn't like her name and branch slated on a public forum, would you like yours?

OftenHangry · 14/10/2018 13:21

I can't see anyone suggesting pot wash tbh. I might have missed that

CoughLaughFart · 14/10/2018 13:25

One of my DC works as a Barista and I wouldn't like her name and branch slated on a public forum, would you like yours?

So you’d never complain on a business’s Facebook page or website?

Everyoneiswingingit · 14/10/2018 13:25

They mentioned a washer that you close I think. At my DD's shop there is a normal sink and a pot wash so I thought that is what they were referring to, hence my reply was in that context. PP has since said no that wasn't what they meant.

Antigon · 14/10/2018 13:26

Everyoneisswingingit

You're the only one referring to a pot wash machine.

Everyoneiswingingit · 14/10/2018 13:26

Not if they were following company policy. Not the staff member's fault.

Everyoneiswingingit · 14/10/2018 13:27

Calm down about the pot wash. It's what they use.

Antigon · 14/10/2018 13:27

They mentioned a washer that you close I think.

I didn't say that, Everyoneiswingingit.

Antigon · 14/10/2018 13:28

Everyoneisswingingit

I'm perfectly calm. You're the one who is confused.
