“I’m only filling a small glass, would you mind if I just cut in?” If only there was a way not to have to wait...

Do you know what, if only I'd thought of that JacquesHammer. Funnily enough, I have and it usually works. But you can only do it if you're second in the queue. If you're 10 back you have to wait otherwise you get some tiresome person tutting: 'there is a queue, you know.'

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 13/10/2018 22:57

I'm a bit confused how a 10 person queue forms at a water dispenser only 30 seconds away from peoples desks... Surely you would look and think "nah I'll wait till there's no queue".

limitedperiodonly · 13/10/2018 22:58

Of course I'm being overdramatic duskymauve. This AIBU

GiraffeObsessedBaby · 13/10/2018 23:44

I carry water around at work as I am in front of classes and get a very dry mouth and sore throat if I don't drink. When home and out and about I usually have a bottle of water in my bag but don't tend to carry it as need hands free with an almost walking ds. Also struggle with bad reflux and drinking little and often helps.

I don't judge people unless I see them littering - each to their own as long as not bothering anyone.

ionising · 13/10/2018 23:57

I enjoy walking in the cold with my costa!!

I bet those criticising do more damage to the planet than me ;be that having a job you have to drive to, more children than 1, huge family shops and lots more.

I don’t judge. ( usually 😬) Nor should you!

CoughLaughFart · 13/10/2018 23:58

Thirty years ago this never happened. If you got thirsty you went to the tap and got a glass of water or went to the shop and bought a drink ... which was rare and wouldn't be water ... or waited till you were back home.

I don’t see why people keep beating this same drum. 30 years ago barely anyone owned a mobile - and those who could only use them to make calls. If you had to go somewhere unfamiliar, you took the A - Z with you. If you didn’t fancy what was on the four TV channels, you went out to rent a VHS tape. If you received a parcel, it meant you’d ordered the goods from a catalogue at least 28 days ago.

Things. Change.

cranberryx · 14/10/2018 00:03

I'm constantly thirsty as I am breastfeeding.
Also, hot coffee cups are great when it's cold outside.

Are some people really that bothered by other people's drinking habits? Shock

PunkrockerGirl59 · 14/10/2018 00:09

I gave a valid reason why some people may need to drink more water than you, limited which you conveniently chose to ignore Hmm
I don't know how you very important people with your time that's so, so much more important than everyone else's manage to get through the day tbh. You have to wait a few minutes seconds for a drink of water and your day falls apart. Ffs
I'm glad I have a job where my patients take up all my time and as a team we grab drinks for each other as necessary.

Flightywoman · 14/10/2018 00:27

But there used to be public water fountains everywhere providing free access to clean, fresh drinking water.

So no, people didn't carry water bottles because there was no need.

That doesn't mean they didn't have drinks, just that they didn't carry water around.

It's hardly the same now - when was the last time you saw a working public drinking fountain?

As to the coffee cup thing, are you seriously suggesting that Starbucks is some kind of status symbol? Starbucks? Really?

Well. Umm. Your idea of premium brands is quite odd. It's hardly the exclusive preserve of the rich and famous is it?!

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 14/10/2018 02:04

I once had a teacher who insisted we brought a water bottle to class. She said that by the time we get thirsty we are already heading towards dehydration which means our brains arent functioning at peak. I'm now 35 and have never dropped the habit of frequent small sips of water throughout the day. Always use a reusable bottke though. Am a bit guilty on the coffee front. I think its become part of the culture here in Australia to go out for coffee. I used to sit down at the cafe, or take it back to the office, but now with 2 little kids who get bored, its just easier some times to take it to go. Do feel guilty about the waste though and have been better lately about taking my reusable coffee cup or simply bringing it from home.

Thank you limited and curly, I came back to this thread for a good laugh, And your posts did not disappoint. Grin

Don't you have a coat, gloves for when it's cold outside?

OP - YANBU and you sound perfectly calm to me. It's the competitive water drinkers/busy-women-grab-a-flat-white-on-the-go types who are frothing.

They should sit down and have a nice cuppa with us.

shearwater · 14/10/2018 03:52

I only buy a bottle of water when in the past I might have been buying a fizzy drink.

Is a plastic bottle of Coke better for you, and the environment?

shearwater · 14/10/2018 03:55

Buying a hot cup of delicious coffee sometimes is one of life's little pleasures. Don't be so joyless.

Purpleartichoke · 14/10/2018 04:22

Before I started carrying water, I felt sick all the time. Even as a child. I get overheated and dehydrated very easily. Always have. Now I tore my water and sip all day and I feel much better.

CoughLaughFart · 14/10/2018 05:50

Don't you have a coat, gloves for when it's cold outside?

I know it’s a massive leap of the imagination - but maybe they have a coat and gloves AND enjoy a warming coffee. On the basis of your argument, no one should wear a jumper or enjoy a hot meal if they’ve got central heating.

BouleBaker · 14/10/2018 06:12

It has never, ever occurred to me that a takeaway coffee cup is a status symbol. That’s just ridiculous! I decide when to have a drink based on when I am thirsty and what I fancy. I don’t feel the need to rush to a place I can sit down and drink in, in case I offend anybody by having a drink at the same time as I get from place to place.

shearwater · 14/10/2018 06:27

Exactly. Some people have an inferiority complex, but I've never heard it in relation to coffee and water before.

Bloody uppity women rushing around drinking coffee and water on the go. Who do they think they are?

shearwater · 14/10/2018 06:30

Thirty years ago this never happened. If you got thirsty you went to the tap and got a glass of water or went to the shop and bought a drink ... which was rare and wouldn't be water ... or waited till you were back home.

So, if I rarely buy a drink from a shop, but when I do it's a fizzy drink instead of water - that's somehow better? Hmm

BestBeforeYesterday · 14/10/2018 06:33

I always carry a bottle of water around, I have done so since I was a teen. I must have saved £££££ over the years.

PhilomenaButterfly · 14/10/2018 06:33

I drink water all the time. You should drink even when you're not thirsty, because when you're thirsty, you're already starting to dehydrate.

GinIsIn · 14/10/2018 06:37

30 years ago there wasn’t the same level of air conditioned nfotioning and central heating everywhere, giving people dry mouths...

I would LOVE to sit down and drink my coffee properly instead of clutching it on the go. That would be wonderful! I need lots of caffeine due to my non-sleeping toddler. But the fact is that provides very few opportunities for sitting down, so until then I will absolutely drink my coffee wherever and whenever I can get it.

PoxAlert · 14/10/2018 06:43

Th only time I really walk around with a takeaway coffee is if I get a rare hour to myself in town.

I don't want to have to decide between a nice hot coffee and enough time to browse all the stuff I want to.

Hmm

Really don't see the big deal.

TonTonMacoute · 14/10/2018 07:39

You can actually do yourself damage by drinking too much water. It tends to be endurance athletes who suffer from this the most, as they try and rehydrate too quickly, but it is something you should be aware of.

userabcname · 14/10/2018 07:50

I'm in my 30s and this is not a new thing. As a child I always had my water bottle with me and my cousins and I thought it the height of sophistication to get a "coffee" (hot chocolate or milk is actually what we were allowed) on the go.

There are many new irritating fads to society but being thirsty isn't one of them!
