... to think KETO isn’t the Panacea it’s made out to be!

(Posted in low carb but no traffic so posting here) Not looking for medical advice (unless you’re medically trained) but I am interested in other people’s experience of being on a Ketogenic diet.

I’ve been eating low carb high fat for about a year. Last year my Cholesterol was bang on so I was told by the GP. Generally I feel great eating this way!

I’ve recently been referred to Rapid Response Cardiac Department due to chest pain. In the interim I’ve been prescribed a spray and have had a blood test and blood pressure test (bp up!) Surgery rang this morning as my blood lipids/cholesterol are raised too and I need to see a GP.

Contrary to what was previously thought, resent research suggests that it isn’t high fat that raises cholesterol but insulin. There is even info about this on the NHS website. On other parts of the NHS website it contradicts this and promotes low fat diets to help lower cholesterol.

I don’t have any added sugar, am low carb but do have heaps of fat & oil. So confusing and I’m dreading seeing the GP for fear of what he will tell me to eat. I know he’ll blame what I’ve been eating!

Do any of you ladies and gents have any experience of cholesterol becoming raised after starting a lchf way of eating. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, you shouldn't be eating loads of fat and oil. Some is fine, but it's not a licence to just pour butter over all your veg.

TheRealHousewife · 12/10/2018 19:50

I think you’re totally right bridgetreilly. Moderation is the key.

Die hard fans on the low carb boards advocate for just that though ... slather slather slather butter/oil on everything. I’ve even read that some people actually eat slices of butter!!

Why are you on the ketogenic diet? What are you trying to achieve? It doesn't seem a balanced diet that your body and brain needs for good health tbh. Do you count green carbs as carbs or only beige ones?

museumum · 12/10/2018 20:01

Personally I think keto is too far for most people but I am very happy with LCHF. I don’t go mad with fat but neither do I restrict it. I eat almost all veg (just hardly ever potatoes) so not depriving myself of nutrients.

Riversleep · 12/10/2018 20:10

My cholesterol went up when I did lchf. I read somewhere on some keto boards that raised cholesterol didn't matter but I got spooked and stopped. I thought its too late if I end up having a heart attack to say 'well I read on the Internet that cholesterol didn't matter!'

TheRealHousewife · 12/10/2018 20:13

Mrsjasmin I was on as i am pre diabetic and wanted to keep carbs/sugars low so as not to spike insulin. Actually until recently I’ve felt great it on. Cravings disappear and the bloat is less.

You look at the carb level of veg and try to have the lower carb veg. So spuds, carrots, peas, corn out, sprouts, cabbage, kale and cauli in. No fruit apart from a few berries, as far too sugary.

yanbu
it can lead to fatty liver, gall issues and raised cholesterol.

sensible portions of mostly plant based food seems to be best.

Thank you for your link Popc0rn it makes for sober reading.

Can you go for a Mediterranean diet instead?

redsummershoes · 12/10/2018 20:26

intermittend fasting (16:8 or 5:2) has shown good results for t2d control

TheRealHousewife · 12/10/2018 20:26

redsummershoes it’s funny you mention the liver as they said my count was abnormal too. Bloody hell. I’m beginning to think I’ve damaged myself and caused myself harm.

TheRealHousewife · 12/10/2018 20:31

Dawnacorns they do advocate the Mediterranean diet for a healthy heart. I’m beginning to think that to ban food groups is not healthy.

I’ve recently signed up for the MN LCHF Pre Christmas Bootcamp to help shift a few pounds. I think I will have to send my apologies.

real the liver is a pretty sturdy organ.
I had fatty liver (nash) earlier this year. I blame cheese and chocolate
by doing 5:2 since may I have been able to get it to a healthy levels again. only having 500cal on a fast day focuses the mind on portion size.

redsummershoes · 12/10/2018 20:37

the current 5:2 thread
maybe have a look if that could work for you.

TheRealHousewife · 12/10/2018 20:40

I’ve got to be honest. I’m panicking a bit. Mum died early with heart related stuff. I can’t be.ieve I’ve been so stupid.

redsummershoes what kind of things did you eat in a day to feel satisfied on 500cals? I’m genuinly interested.

Can people stop confusing stupid keto for actual good keto? There is nothing bad about chicken and veg for dinner or a tuna salad for lunch or a cheese and mushroom omlette for breakfast (as an example of a healthy keto day!)

As long as your net carbs are low enough you will be in keto. But there are shit and stupid ways to do it and good healthy ways to do it.

Keto got me my baby boy after 12yrs of TTC. When done right it works. And improves insulin resistance OP so not sure why you even mentioned that.

AlphaBravo · 12/10/2018 20:42

And OP if your Mum died early then chances are it's hereditary anyway 🙄

redsummershoes · 12/10/2018 20:45

I'm not going to lie, fasting is sometimes hard.
on a fast day I don't eat until dinner. lots of strong tasting infusions tide me over + a bouillon at lunchtime. dinner is then 2 eggs, one slice bread or one boiled potato and a pile salad leaves & veg.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/10/2018 20:49

Having looked after epileptic children on a ketogenic diet to help manage their seizures. I can't imagine why anyone would do it through choice. It's a dreadful diet.

Like anything diet related, it will suit some people and not suit others.

I think a lot of the health issues people have now is due to carrying extra weight and too many calories.

TheRealHousewife · 12/10/2018 21:11

Thank you redsummershoes that helpful.

AlphaBravo What’s good Keto? Serious question.

I’ve done mine as per the guidelines on MN bootcamp. I thought they were doing it right. I mentioned insulin as I’d read Keto could helps in not increasing its secretion and thus reduces your waistline. BTW don’t roll your eyes at me it’s very rude Grin
