... to think KETO isn’t the Panacea it’s made out to be!

(Posted in low carb but no traffic so posting here) Not looking for medical advice (unless you’re medically trained) but I am interested in other people’s experience of being on a Ketogenic diet.

I’ve been eating low carb high fat for about a year. Last year my Cholesterol was bang on so I was told by the GP. Generally I feel great eating this way!

I’ve recently been referred to Rapid Response Cardiac Department due to chest pain. In the interim I’ve been prescribed a spray and have had a blood test and blood pressure test (bp up!) Surgery rang this morning as my blood lipids/cholesterol are raised too and I need to see a GP.

Contrary to what was previously thought, resent research suggests that it isn’t high fat that raises cholesterol but insulin. There is even info about this on the NHS website. On other parts of the NHS website it contradicts this and promotes low fat diets to help lower cholesterol.

I don’t have any added sugar, am low carb but do have heaps of fat & oil. So confusing and I’m dreading seeing the GP for fear of what he will tell me to eat. I know he’ll blame what I’ve been eating!

Do any of you ladies and gents have any experience of cholesterol becoming raised after starting a lchf way of eating. Thanks in advance.

The Mediterranean way of eating (I’m not going to say Diet) is apparently the healthiest. Michael Mosley’s Blood Sugar Diet is based around low carb Mediterranean foods - although it is very low calorie 800 cals a day. But you could follow that way of eating and not stick to the calorie allowance. Lean proteins, fish, lots of veg, some fruit, healthy non processed whole grains, nuts, avocados etc.

realhousewife I'm committing now to no (extreme) dieting and no bingeing, hoping to get in that place of eating healthily and losing weight slowly, with some cheat days/meals to avoid feeling deprived. Keto really was a form of bulimia/purging for me, and I can't be the only one. Its the slow and steady/moderate road for me now even if that means being slightly overweight. Not worth it to lose weight so fast and regain it even faster. Thank you for your concern.

I've found eating healthy, unprocessed foods and avoiding sugar and processed carbs helps..also avoiding snacking and no food after 8 pm.

Litllepeas that sounds great! I try not to have too much red meat and do have a couple of days meat free. I would struggle to not have any animal products though. That really is a huge shift in mind set and dietary habits.

Footballmum I hope your system settles down soon. Sounds like you’ve had a rough time of it.

Peridot1 Yes I’m quite enjoying the med way of eating. Not having the white stuff like rice pasta white bread or white flour products.

Me to PrincessDando Moderation all the way. Great to hear you’ve found a healthy woe that works for you.

I think we all have an intrinsic knowledge about what works for ourselves. I know I & my belly guts always feel better on a low carb diet. I also know too much dairy & fats upsets the apple cart too.
