Now they want to mess with our pizza's!

Ok, this has come from the Daily Fail so not sure on the accuracy but they state:

Pizzas will have to shrink or lose their toppings under proposed Government plans to cap calories in our favourite treats in an obesity crackdown.

Drastic guidelines from Public Health England state pizzas should contain no more than 928 calories. The move will also apply to pies, which will be capped at 695.

So in reality, if this is implemented, we're going to end up with pizza's with far less cheese and other toppings. This assumes that everyone eats a whole pizza to themselves! I know I certainly don't. Likewise I never eat a whole pie to my self! The only exception is that I occasionally eat at Pizza Express (apparently my favourite there will be over the "limit") and if I do that I don't eat any other meals that day.

AIBU to think this policing of our food is getting way out of hand?

Oh for cunt sake.

pictish · 12/10/2018 18:27

Make your own pizzas. Add extra cheese and leave out the apostrophe. Grin

HopeClearwater · 12/10/2018 18:35

Are you willing to pay more tax to pay for the public health implications of eating a day’s worth of calories in one go? It seems a majority of the country aren’t willing. Therefore it’s time to restrict people in other ways.

HelpPleaseI · 12/10/2018 18:41

MN is not the place for sensible discussion on food. There's those that couldn't possibly eat more than one slice of pizza with a small side salad, and those like that woman who posted saying she ate 36(?) Cadbury creame eggs in a day.

treezylover · 12/10/2018 18:47

Nothing that is processed in a factory is ‘our food’- anyone who eats it is at the liberty of the company who produce it. Make your own 🍕 and add as much crap on top as you want- take back control!

user1471426142 · 12/10/2018 18:56

I suspect they are threatening regulation to encourage reformation. What I imagine you’ll end up with is the 3000 calorie pizzas getting closer to 2000 and some new labling of portion sizes (eg that a large isn’t intended for one person only).

Ottily · 12/10/2018 19:03

It would be nice if control was extended elsewhere, NOT over the food that is readily available to buy.

I don't like my drinks messed with to the point I can hardly buy sweetener-free. I don't like my pizzas messed with to the point I cannot buy the crap toppings I like ready-made.

Yes, you can always make your own. I do so every few months during the holidays, but making a pizza from scratch takes a good 3 hours of preparation time - time I'm unlikely to invest during a working week. Why should I compromise on taste, just because some people cannot or are unwilling to control how much they stuff into their pie holes?

Is it not obvious how scary it is that it is now being dictated what we can and cannot put in our mouths as if we are unable to make choices ourselves? But then uneducated masses are preferable to people who can make informed choices.

I'm getting more and more concerned about individual responsibility being taken away, and pizzas are just the latest in a long row of attempts to infantilise the many.

AlphaBravo · 12/10/2018 19:05

Add £2 a month tax to everyones wages and leave the fucking pizzas alone. Also there is absolutely NO way of regulating this with local pizza shops.

Fatasfook · 12/10/2018 19:06

Make your own! Cheaper. Tastier. As big as you likier

FrazzyAndFrumpled · 12/10/2018 19:07

100% this.... said whilst waiting for my large pizza to be delivered. Grin

ScreamingValenta · 12/10/2018 19:11

How does this work? Surely it depends on how the pizza is portioned. A 2000 calorie pizza (in excess of guidelines) shared amongst four people would be a fairly reasonable 500 cals each. A 900 calorie pizza (within guidelines) would be excessive for one person's single meal if eaten on a regular basis

emma2939 · 12/10/2018 19:20

Full agree!!

Also regarding sugar tax, I can't have drinks with sweeteners as I end up with horrific headaches so if I fancy a nice glass of pop I need the sugar version, but again because people can't or won't be sensible with their portions, I have to pay more for my drinks now!!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/10/2018 19:47

I foresee pizza Duo packs - two 927-calorie pizzas in one pack labelled 'for two people to share Wink', same as they've done with chocolate bars. Either that or pizzas will be made just below the threshold and will increase in price, but be on a permanent BOGOF offer.

As PPs have said, though, how can you possibly police this? If it happens, this will apparently take no account of the number of people sharing one (and whether children or adults), how many meals it will be spread across and/or whether you're having a shamelessly big blowout to celebrate a landmark life-event or you regularly have a great big pizza to yourself as a snack five days a week.

AnotherGreenDot · 12/10/2018 19:52

I’ll be making my own. 🍕🍕🍕🍕

greendale17 · 12/10/2018 19:58

I never realised how much fat was in a Dominos. I stay well clear now

EggysMom · 12/10/2018 20:01

They're going to have to base this on 'portion size'. So if a supermarket £2 pizza says that it "contains 2 portions" then it can have 1850 calories.

There's no rule to say that you cannot buy a pizza intended for two people, and then scoff it all yourself Smile

RebelRogue · 12/10/2018 20:07

@greendale17 seriously? You didn't realise how much fat there is in a big, cheese laden, grease dripping pizza ?
I still eat it.Grin

ScreamingValenta · 12/10/2018 20:07

EggysMom I'll wait to hear the news that a large pepperoni pizza with extra cheese and a stuffed crust now serves 42 people Grin.

leafgrass · 12/10/2018 20:12

It'll be ok. I often have the diet versions of the pizzas at Ask or Zizzi's. They are lovely. I'd like them to develop more varieties of these.

Watch out, they'll be coming for our apostrophes next!

Eliza9917 · 12/10/2018 21:01

We make our own pizzas on wraps. Lovely and so much better than shop bought.

Storm4star · 12/10/2018 22:00

Sorry, the fury that they were messing with my pizza affected my punctuation skills Grin

The thing is, when they introduced measures to reduce the number of smokers, those measures did not adversely affect non smokers. In fact it made things better for non smokers. Ok, we have an obesity crisis but all these new measures adversely affect the non obese too. The artificial sweeteners being a prime example. If someone wants to eat a lot they’ll just eat two pizzas instead! It’s not going to stop people being overweight. This level of interference in people’s lives just feels too much and where is it going to end?

OP posts:
user139328237 · 12/10/2018 22:07

928???
Decent ones can contain double that. Presumably the 928 is not per person as most shop bought pizzas claim to serve 2 or even 4 already despite only being enough for 1.

Cachailleacha · 12/10/2018 22:07

They say how many portions on the box. People should be able to buy a family sized pizza or pie.

Grated · 12/10/2018 22:10

Fat people are ruining our food and drink take some fucking responsibility and sort your health out
