Now they want to mess with our pizza's!

Ok, this has come from the Daily Fail so not sure on the accuracy but they state:

Pizzas will have to shrink or lose their toppings under proposed Government plans to cap calories in our favourite treats in an obesity crackdown.

Drastic guidelines from Public Health England state pizzas should contain no more than 928 calories. The move will also apply to pies, which will be capped at 695.

So in reality, if this is implemented, we're going to end up with pizza's with far less cheese and other toppings. This assumes that everyone eats a whole pizza to themselves! I know I certainly don't. Likewise I never eat a whole pie to my self! The only exception is that I occasionally eat at Pizza Express (apparently my favourite there will be over the "limit") and if I do that I don't eat any other meals that day.

AIBU to think this policing of our food is getting way out of hand?

Just checked the freezer, pizza for two is 930 kcal. If I had a family of four I would need a bigger pizza, or would have to buy two pizzas. Isn't this just going to increase packaging as families will have to buy more individual items?

Walkingdeadfangirl · 12/10/2018 22:51

Seriously if you want to stuff your face with pizza just buy more pizzas. You know tax payers have to fund the NHS!

leafgrass · 13/10/2018 07:56

Pizzas are very quick and easy to make at home. I think this will make a real positive difference at restaurants, though. At the moment there is limited choice regarding mains that aren't practically your whole daily calorie requirement. If you want to maybe have another course for variety the choice is even less. I think if you view pizza as maybe just part of a meal to serve with salad or other vegetables it enables the smaller pizzas to go much further.

Bestseller · 13/10/2018 08:03

How do you control how much pizza people eat?

Most supermarket pizzas are horrible anyway but sharing a family pizza with plenty of salad can't be a bad thing. We'd probably end up eating more if the pizza were smaller as we'd buy extra.

Of course what should really happen is that people choose not to buy a nasty refined carb pizza base topped with processed meat and cheese at all.

OftenHangry · 13/10/2018 08:06

I am all for healthy eating and trying to do something about obesity, but.

This is ridiculous. Rather than banning these they should make restaurants put approx calories on a menu so people have a choice.

OhFlipMama · 13/10/2018 08:16

Ah sod off with that rule.

I visit a pizza place or get takeaway about twice a year! If I want to have a fully loaded calorific monster of a pizza then I should be able to!

ushuaiamonamour · 13/10/2018 09:18

user139328237 No, the 928 limit would be on a pizza for one. And that's a massive number of calories for one dish at one meal for one person.

I wasn't willing to trust the Daily Mail's story, so looked around. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/10/11/pizzas-must-shrink-lose-toppings-government-anti-obesity-plan/; this one I'm more willing to trust. 1) Pizza is not the only food in the plan; 2) Plan will not go ahead before food manufactureres are consulted (for whatever that might be worth); and, most important, 3) It won't be mandatory for anyone to comply with the plan.

I didn't read the Mail's version because I'm already full sure that a PC immigrant paediatrician in a hijab is behind the plan.

Pizzas this size in supermarkets are pizzas for two. So I think this would just affect takeaways and restaurants.

Takeaways could just state the appropriate number of servings for the size so this shouldn't change anything. Restaurants can make a smaller pizza for one, or provide extra plates with a larger pizza and say on the menu that it is for two to share. If I've got this right then it sounds like a positive change as restaurant meals are too much for most people.

@leafgrass

They aren’t quick & easy to make though. We I make homemade pizza I have to start the process at about 3pm so the dough has time to prove

leafgrass · 13/10/2018 09:48

Lets, it totally depends on how you make the base. If you aren't bothered about a fresh base you could use a ready made naan or tortilla. If you wanted a quicker base of your own you could make it like you would a chapatis, with soda bread or scone type mixture.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 13/10/2018 09:52

This is now making me think of ordering a Dominos tonight!

To the poster who mentioned the low calorie pizza in Zizzi and Ask, don't they put salad in the middle or am I thinking of something else?

GabsAlot · 13/10/2018 09:55

its jamie oliver he wants us all to be miserable while he still serves crap at his own resturant

GabsAlot · 13/10/2018 09:57

oh he also wants 2for 1 pizzas banned

specialsubject · 13/10/2018 09:57

It was on the news last night, illustrated with a morbidly obese man whose personal trainer has been round all the local takeaways telling them not.to serve him. If pizzas were.smaller he would just buy two.

Stupid idea.

leafgrass · 13/10/2018 09:59

No, it's a slightly smaller pizza. Still has cheese on top but you do get a side salad. I like it. The salad is interesting too and doesn't just seem like an afterthought like some salads. I do generally like salads, though. I tend to add more salad and veg to my meal portions at home in order to control my calorie intake.

seventhgonickname · 13/10/2018 09:59

I don't drink fizzy drinks or eat pizza often but am still overweight .I would probably loose some if I eat less between meals and gave up bread not if the food I at had slightly less calories butI still kept eating.
Next they'll dictate the portion sizes in fish and chips shops and other takeaways.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 13/10/2018 10:00

Why should I have my food fucked with because some people can’t minutir their own fatness??? Bullshit!

leafgrass · 13/10/2018 10:04

Stupid idea

Not though if pubs and restaurants had more lower calorie main meals. Because I don't want single meals with over 1000 calories or even approaching that I really have to watch what I eat and look up nutritional information for establishments online. It would mean much more choice if eating establishments were encouraged to produce more lower calories meals. Perfectly possible. I can do this at home but do like to eat out occasionally!

leafgrass · 13/10/2018 10:07

Why should I have my food fucked with because some people can’t minutir their own fatness??? Bullshit!

The food would probably be more like someone would make at home. Commercial food tends to have more added fat and sugar. I can manage my own fatness thank you very much and am doing. This just makes it easier to do so whilst still being able to eat out.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 13/10/2018 10:09

I make all my own food at home. If I go out or get a takeaway I want full fat, processed shitty food. And I should be able to have that every so often if I want to.

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 13/10/2018 10:10

Add extra cheese and leave out the apostrophe.

This. With bells mushrooms on.

leafgrass · 13/10/2018 10:12

I want full fat, processed shitty food.

Why on earth would you want that? I can't see that any top chef would be wanting to use processed food, anyway. Are you the sort that would slather everything in ketchup?

NotUmbongoUnchained · 13/10/2018 10:14

No Confused

I cook everything from scratch, don’t buy any processed food. So when I have treat, I want it to actually be a treat.

leafgrass · 13/10/2018 10:16

But I agree with full fat. As in no mucked about fats or foods. Except you don't need to add more in to a dish and you can have a reasonable portion of it. Like a ramekin of dauphinois instead of half a plate full.

leafgrass · 13/10/2018 10:17

So when I have treat, I want it to actually be a treat.

But processed food tastes like it is. It is not a treat IMO.
