velcro trainers for 8 year old DS?

velcroplease · 12/10/2018 11:43

My AIBU is that this can't be that rare can it?

My 8 year old DS is dyslexic and I suspect dyspraxic in terms of fine motor things. He has not yet mastered tying laces, but we are working on it.

He is tall and now an adult size 3 in trainers. Can I find any with velcro fastenings in that size? Proper sporty ones he can run around in that are not thin material? I can't seem to find any anywhere.

Surely he can't be the only one?! Can any of you wise mumsnetters signpost me to velcro fastening trainers for awkward children?

Thank you in advance.

Have you looker at skechers? Im sure they do ones that look like they lace up but they are really just a mock lace and slip on.

Their go walks they do in a mule type too if suitable.

I got size 3 Velcro trainers in Sports Direct - Lonsdale - she wears them to death. I've also got adult trainers in Decathlon with Velcro fasteners.

UnsympathetiCow · 12/10/2018 11:47

No and I gave up looking. We got some with a slide on the laces and he seems to cope fine with them.

Jammiebammie · 12/10/2018 11:47

My dd is autistic and really struggles with laces, I’ve found now she’s in bigger sizes it’s quite hard to get ‘cool’ Velcro trainers.
We stuck to slip ons for ages, until we found hickies which have been a complete game changer! You can put them in any laced shoe and they just slip on like magic!

Rarfy · 12/10/2018 11:48

www.skechers.com/en-gb/style/97761/thermoflux-nano-grid/nvlm they do a few like these with elastic laces basically slip on. Has it in the description. Have some fab light up ones if to his tastes. Sports direct often do them a little cheaper too.

My husband has pretty bad dyslexia & refused to tie his trainers until we met 5 years ago! He now knows how to tie properly lol. I seen an ad on facebook for magnetic laces. Think this is it, not too sure if it'll help any if at all but might me something to look into

Skechers have velcro ones up to size 2 Rarfy.

I did not think of lonsdale, thank you, I will check these out in sports direct.

Have never heard of hickies but am going to check them out!

I’ve inadvertently linked to super bright ones! You get plain black and white too, and you get cheaper brands which do the same thing, although I find the hickies brand stay snugger on the foof.

velcroplease · 12/10/2018 11:50

Ooh thanks for that Skechers link. I really wanted to get him Skechers but sport direct only had them up to size two.... Will research further thank you.

Like this, Quicklace. You can buy the laces separately, youtube how to put them on.
www.salomon.com/en-int/blog/how-to-use-the-salomon-quicklace-system
I'm sure there are other, similar, systems.

Jammiebammie · 12/10/2018 11:50

Foot Blush

TeenTimesTwo · 12/10/2018 11:50

My DDs both have trouble with laces.
DD2 currently has Clarks trainers which look like laces but are actually elasticated.
We have also got Velcro trainers from Sports Direct in the past.

e.g. www.bluntsshoes.com/boys-clarks-lightweight-gloforms-trainers-reflect-spy/ though out of stock

seekingthejoy · 12/10/2018 11:51

You can get silicone laces that just are individual straps, so you put one end in one eyelet and the other end in the opposite one, if you see what I mean. They have stretch in then so you can pull on trainers without having to untie laces. You can get them on Amazon very cheaply and you get a set with 8 or so laces/straps for each shoe of varying sizes. Search no tie shoe laces. HTH.

fudgeandtortillas · 12/10/2018 11:51

I bought lace up trainers and something called "Performance Stretch Laces" which were two for £3 from Sports Direct. You can put them in any trainers and it means you do not need to tie any laces.

velcroplease · 12/10/2018 11:51

Those hickies have blown my mind! Had no idea there was such an invention!

Have you looked at Adidas? They where the only ones I could find for ds for PE that where velcro and looked supportive enough for his dodgy feet

velcroplease · 12/10/2018 11:53

Gosh you are all so helpful, thank you. Its nice to know I'm not the only one and I don't want DS to feel pressured to learn it and to highlight that it's another thing he can't do well. Dyslexia is punishing enough to your confidence :-(

Jammiebammie that did make me laugh Smile

I got some non tie laces ( for my dyslexic dad who still can't get his laces to stay done up at 82 - Not age related he's always been like it !! ) off eBay - they are elasticated and you cut them to fit in and just slide the toggle.

velcroplease · 12/10/2018 11:56

Thank you. This is an eye opener- looks like DS could be some time learning to tie them! I'm imagining him in velcro shoes now on his wedding day.

I was going to say Sketchers!
My 9yo has additional needs and still really struggles with laces, and there are lots of Sketchers designs that don't have them.
Quite often the supermarket trainers (Asda and Sainsbury's) have velcro too, but they're not always that robust, so it's hit and miss I'm afraid.

Rarfy · 12/10/2018 11:58

You're welcome. My dniece has suspected dyspraxia and struggles so doesnt do laces either.

Rarfy · 12/10/2018 11:59

@Jammiebammie made my day Grin

velcroplease · 12/10/2018 11:59

Thanks. I did get him some supermarket ones at the start of September that I just returned in disgust as they had fallen apart after a few weeks wear so I'm hoping to find some in a proper brand.

I second lonsdale sports direct. DS uses them for PE(He's 7 and still can't tie up laces and has massive feet). They last really well and super cheap!
