velcro trainers for 8 year old DS?

My AIBU is that this can't be that rare can it?

My 8 year old DS is dyslexic and I suspect dyspraxic in terms of fine motor things. He has not yet mastered tying laces, but we are working on it.

He is tall and now an adult size 3 in trainers. Can I find any with velcro fastenings in that size? Proper sporty ones he can run around in that are not thin material? I can't seem to find any anywhere.

Surely he can't be the only one?! Can any of you wise mumsnetters signpost me to velcro fastening trainers for awkward children?

Thank you in advance.

My son is in the same boat as you. I have the elasticated no tie laces. I got them from amazon, they're great 😊

jammiebammie superb typo! Grin

3rd for Lonsdale @ sportsdirect. I have some and my very big footed husband has some. Gym, work etc etc and last for ages.
Though I have them because they look pretty, his is laziness lol

My eldest son is 7, already a size 4(!) and is autistic. Even with seeing an OT I don’t think he’s going to be in lace up his own for ages.

I really struggled to find decent black Velcro trainers for under £25 which could last through a winter of outside PE, in the end I got him some elastic laced trainers from Deichmann (online) which are really sturdy, good grip and he finds them easy to take on and off, and he’s able to work the toggle without adult help.
There’s several different colours available and ranges in price from £20-£25.

I got a pair of size 2 Nike Velcro trainers in sports direct

YeTalkShiteHen · 12/10/2018 12:33

Adidas Stan Smiths are expensive but bombproof (come in black or white too) and do my two boys who have fine motor control issues and sensory issues.

dementedpixie · 12/10/2018 12:40

Adidas definitely do them as ds has Velcro ones in a size 6.5 . Altasport is the style

UnsympathetiCow · 12/10/2018 12:47

DS's trainers are CMP and I bought them from zalando.

velcroplease · 12/10/2018 13:38

Thank you all for giving me lots more ideas Smile

That's the ones my ds has. They go up to 6.5 at Zalando

N0tfinished · 12/10/2018 17:25

Geox have Velcro up to size 8. I've been buying DS the same pair for years... I buy the Savage but in the colours, the all-Black ones are the too grown-up. My DS is only 11 but size 7 foot.

Thisimmortalcurl · 12/10/2018 17:26

I always managed to get above size 2 and get the label.

Triathlon laces have a toggle and slide which would work with normal trainers if you don't want to be constrained by fastening options.

AnotherPidgey · 12/10/2018 17:32

DS(7) has Decathlon which have elastic laces and a single ankle velcro. They last well with his slow growing feet. He's only a 11/29, but it looks like they go up towards adult sizes... I say adult... I'm a 2 so I know exactly who to blame Grin

4point2fleet · 12/10/2018 17:34

My son has New Balance 373s. They have good solid Velcro panels; fine for proper sport and seem to pass the 'cool' test.

Jammie - thank you for the er... Hickies!

My 8 year old just won't or when I grind him down enough to do it they're so bad they last about 2 mins and I'm sick of seeing him slop around or tucking them into his shoes. And to make matters worse he's a bloody leftie and I've had to hand instruction over to YouTube to help him. We've done the bunny ears method but he's crap at that too. How on earth did we all cope pre-velcro?

Longtalljosie · 12/10/2018 17:37

We get these - they’re great

Jammiebammie · 12/10/2018 17:53

Mines a leftie too, I do think that contributes to the clumsiness.
Honestly the hickies have made things so much easier.
And sorry for the typo... I have no idea why why phone things I type foof more often than foot Blush

Jammiebammie · 12/10/2018 17:53
  • why my phone thinks

Clearly it thinks I’m illiterate too!

parkermoppy · 12/10/2018 17:57

Vans have lots of velcro ones in bigger sizes - if you type V in to the search bar on their website it brings them all up as all velcro styles have V in the name. Hope this helps!

parkermoppy · 12/10/2018 17:57

ah and to add to that, New Balance! try amazon for some good velcro new balance trainers

straightjeans · 12/10/2018 19:17

Get him the Vans old skool velcro. As a 25 year old woman I also have a pair.
