Due to their obesity campaign.
Not helpful imo

Isn’t it? I’m obese, I have a BMI of 34 (ish) and I have no issue with it. It’s good to be reminded of the health issues it can cause. No different to highlighting the issues with smoking or drinking in my opinion

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 11/10/2018 22:51

But obesity IS the second biggest cause of cancer. No point hiding behind it for fear of people being offended by the campaign.

I say that as a morbidly obese size 26 woman

greathat · 11/10/2018 22:51

Eh? But obesity and cancer are Cleary linked (and I say that as a fat woman). The epigenetic changes are a clear risk factor is cancer

Fucksgiven · 11/10/2018 22:54

But it's true that being fat can cause cancer

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 11/10/2018 22:55

We’re constantly told that obesity causes Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, strokes etc but rarely is cancer pointed out. A campaign to heighten this fact can not be a bad thing.

funnylittlefloozie · 11/10/2018 22:55

Support them, dont support them. Your choice. But dont try to pretend that obesity is not a substantial factor for cancer. It just IS.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 11/10/2018 22:55

What happened there Confused

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 12/10/2018 07:15

are you actually going to come back and explain your reasoning OP?

NiceViper · 12/10/2018 07:46

Not helpful about what?

They're pointing out the known risk factors, not providing smoking cessation or diet services or exercise clinics or whatever.

Badhairday77 · 12/10/2018 08:25

It is just too in your face. Those who are obese know that it isn't healthy. They are not idiots. But imo being so direct is not helpful. These ads are on the radio constantly. Talk about kicking someone when they are down.
Also studies have shown that this type of thing raises stress levels.

So everyone should just ignore obesity? In case it offends someone who is obese?

SarahH12 · 12/10/2018 08:30

Gosh you're awfully sensitive. It's a fact that obesity causes cancer, there's no point denying it. Do you think they should get rid of their alcohol/ smoking can lead to cancer info too?

TwistedStitch · 12/10/2018 08:34

I think factual information on health should come before hurt feelings tbh. I'm overweight, was obese a few months ago but losing weight gradually now. I had no idea that obesity was such a high cancer risk and I'm glad I now do because it has spurred me on. I don't see how this is any different to warnings about smoking or sunbeds tbh.

ExFury · 12/10/2018 08:36

People need to know that obesity causes cancer. Just as going on a bout smoking causing cancer probably upsets someone who struggles to quit even people who are upset by the bluntness of being told obesity causes it need to know.

And I say that as someone who is obese.

Britneysfa · 12/10/2018 08:37

The difficulty as a research charity they have to report back on the research. Would you rather they hid the results?

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 12/10/2018 08:38

For gods sake.

I weigh 300Ib. That is obese, morbidly so. I know I’m fat. I’m very aware I’m obese. I know the risks. I’m making changes and I am aiming for a healthy weight.

If someone takes notice of this campaign and changes their lifestyle, how can that be a bad thing?!

We’ve tiptoed around obesity for to long for fear of offending people, that’s clearly not working

ShotsFired · 12/10/2018 08:38

I no longer support them for different reasons, but may I suggest an alternative such as eveappeal.org.uk/?

A small charity who work tirelessly to support women with gynae cancers.

LostInShoebiz · 12/10/2018 08:38

I think getting cancer might raise your stress levels more so seems sensible to try to exercise prevention rather than cure.

OctoberDaze · 12/10/2018 08:39

I don’t see how it’s any different to putting ‘smoking kills’ on cigarette boxes.

Smoking kills. So does obesity. It’s a fact.

greendale17 · 12/10/2018 08:39

@Badhairday77

You are being ridiculous. Shall we just tip toe around the issue then so we don’t hurt your feelings? FACT- obesity causes cancer.

The obese people I know don’t care. They like their food too much to give a damn.

Figgygal · 12/10/2018 08:41

Why shouldn't they be direct about it? Obesity is not a healthy way to live and people shouldn't be ignorant to the health risks associated with that

Being direct in the way they're being here may get through to some people and encourage them to make the changes necessary to reduce their cancer risk why is that a bad thing

Eponymous · 12/10/2018 08:41

Fear of premature death made me lose weight. I've gone from obese to healthy bmi.

I dread leaving my dd to fend for herself.

But then she's only 8 and 50 isn't far off for me, so the risk does seem imminent and impending doomy rather than a distant future thing.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 12/10/2018 08:42

I have a friend who works at Cancer Research doing this policy research and we’ve discussed this at length - why shouldn’t they tell people that being fat makes you far more likely to get cancer, just like they told us smoking would give you cancer. It’s fact, the evidence is there.

QuizzlyBear · 12/10/2018 08:43

So you'd prevent those who need it from being educated about the causal link between overeating / obesity and cancer because you don't like hearing it?

How massively self-centred of you.

NewPapaGuinea · 12/10/2018 08:44

Are Cancer Research UK offering a solution/help to obese people or are they just pointing the finger at them? If not, seems a bit odd to be an organisation that is committed to reducing cancer rates and has identified a cause, yet doesn’t do anything practical about it.
