DH was Lancashire, and said hospickle and lickle..

Differences in dialect and idioms by area is a fucking fascinating area.

I mean really. I despair of the way local accents are being worn away due to over exposure to both RP and trans atlantic pronounciation (which is what we used to threaten Lloyd Grossman with before he went into pasta sauce)

tombstone How else do you pronounce creche?

I have always thought it odd that Brits pronounce crepe "krep". It's "crayp" here.

I'm a Manc exiled in the South East. Everyone here sounds posh and pronounces things all wrong.

It's just regional, I don't understand why someone pronouncing something differently is so annoying.

I’m scottish - I say and was taught jay for J. I hate “hi” and “haitch” for I and H.

Sequences instead of sequins drives me mad!

Report

umizoomi · 11/10/2018 21:54

My Scottish DH says J to rhyme with I

My IL's say 'jags' when they mean jabs (as in injections) that does my head in

Scon or Scowne?

Deepbreathsbabe · 11/10/2018 21:55

I absolutely hate it when people say should of / could of / would of instead of should have / could have / would have.

Report

eelbecomingforyou · 11/10/2018 21:55

J is not pronounced jai (to rhyme with high) in Scotland! It’s jay (to rhyme with hay).

Report

Buggerbrexit · 11/10/2018 21:56

We don’t mean jabs though, we mean jags. Because it’s jaggy and we get jagged with them.

umizoomi · 11/10/2018 21:56

Isn't crèche - cresh?

Report

RedDwarves · 11/10/2018 21:57

Scon or Scowne?

In Aus, the food is "scon", but the place (Scone, NSW) is "scowne" to rhyme with bone. Just to keep it interesting. Grin

YANBU. It's cut-ler-ree

Hospickle and bockle made me laugh LOL! And some people say chimlee too.

A colleague of mine likes old comedy films, and pronounces Abbott and Costello, as Abbott and CASTello. Drives me nuts!

A woman my husband works with, when she says the plural of 'breakfast' says 'breakfasts-iz.' She says the plural of breakfast (breakfasts,) and adds an 'S' on.'

@eelbecomingforyou I'm currently in Scotland & Scottish and everyone I know pronounces it that way so it's definitely pronounced JAI to rhyme with eye in this part of Scotland... you can't make such a sweeping statement as if it's fact Hmm
