Hotel complaint

Hi.

AIBU...back in June I stayed at a big chain hotel with a friend for a gig. I only live about an hour away, but friend was travelling 3 hours, and staying at mine would've added to that.

Went to great lengths to get a twin room and it was confirmed as such on booking.

When we arrived we were told we'd been "upgraded" as our booked room choice wasn't available. Basically they put us in a slightly bigger room but rather than twin beds it was a double and a sofa bed.

Long story short sofa bed was extremely uncomfortable and not at all an appropriate alternative to two proper beds. I complained and was given reward points for the chain for a free night in one of their hotels, after I made the point that a free night at that particular property wouldn't be much use.

Fast forward 4 months and I'm trying to book the free night with the points. I'm After a Sunday night stay in London so fully expected to have to drop a level from the brand I stayed at to their budget version...but out of 71 hotels only 4 are available for the points I was given-the closest being Shepperton and Luton!! If I added cash to points it would cost between £60-80 plus the points I was given for one night, even for the lower budget brand.

I've gone back to them to complain...I just feel that they've fobbed me off with a "free night" at one of their hotels only to find the number of points would get me a free night in a very limited number of properties.

I absolutely expected to have to drop a brand in terms of hotel quality-but even those are too expensive for the points I've been given. AIBU?

Why couldn't you and your friend share the bed if the sofa bed was so uncomfortable? I've shared with friends many times over the years when a twin hasn't been available. Never once thought to complain about it.

greyspottedgoose · 11/10/2018 19:29

It's never even crossed my mind to ask for a twin room when I have stayed with friends 🤷🏻‍♀️

TulipsInBloom1 · 11/10/2018 19:31

If you werent the last room to check in, why didnt you ask them to upgrade another twin still to arrive instead?

Alternatively, bedshare.

Or ask the night staff for extra duvets to make the mattress more comfy?

MrsRhettButler · 11/10/2018 19:32

That's not the point though, op and friend didn't want to share a bed so they booked a twin room.

I'd get back to them and complain more yes.

Laney79 · 11/10/2018 19:32

We could've shared, but we deliberately asked for and booked a twin room. We actually paid more to stay at this hotel as it could offer us a twin. There was a cheaper option but it would've been a sofa bed and a double and we didn't want that.

But why did one of you stay on the uncomfortable sofa when you could have shared the bed?

GreenTulips · 11/10/2018 19:35

I agree a free nights stay is a free nights stay - you wouldn't even agreed to thisboffer if you knew what the 'points' we actually worth!

I'd also complain again and make sure they are more transparent

Laney79 · 11/10/2018 19:39

It's more about the agreed compensation to be honest. I was told it was for a free night in one of the chains (hundreds of) properties, and even though I'm more than happy to drop to their budget hotel brand its still proving impossible to find one in London.

Why are people asking why they didn't share a bed? That's got absolutely nothing to do with it.

They didn't want to and it wasn't what they paid for.

actiongirl1978 · 11/10/2018 20:37

Wow I would never share a bed with a friend (i'm 40 but would never have done so when young either) and I'd have been really upset if I'd had a similar scenario OP.

Go back and complain, it wasn't an adequate compensation originally.
