How do i quit the sugar
Toughtips · 11/10/2018 12:46
I'm struggling to quit.
Full fat coke is my nemesis.
It's making me gain weight but I enjoy it so much.
Any tips on how to quit lol
imamouseduh · 11/10/2018 12:48
Not to sound trite, but.. just stop drinking it. Don't switch to diet coke as that will only fuel your sweet craving. Just switch to water and herbal teas. You will get used to it really quickly.
Toughtips · 11/10/2018 12:56
Thanks.
Can't do tea. Not a fan of hot beverages.
Will just have to quit cold turkey.

Try some of the cold infusions that are around. Sainsbury's do their own range and I think Twinings do some too.
I think they are sugar free but have flavour.
Worth a shot

There is very, very little difference in taste between full fat and diet coke (and I can often taste sweeteners a mile off!). I'd switch to diet coke/diet pepsi, and also, I'd make a rule for yourself; with every glass of diet-soda, you have to drink an equivalent glass of water before it Good luck!

Also, no added sugar squash is really good alternative to water

I have been doing this for the past few weeks (and lots 17lbs in the process).
I just stopped cold turkey with fizzy drinks, sweets, wine, takeaways etc.
I had a headache for a few days at the beginning but made sure i was drinking at least 2 litres of water per day, now a few weeks on i no longer get cravings at 3pm for something sweet and i am able to resist things more - such as the takeaway my DH wanted last night, i made a lovely pot of homemade soup instead!
It is hard to begin with but good luck !

I so feel you op. I'm addicted to sugar. I'm ok with drinking water. But I seek chocolate, sweets all the time. I can't go an evening without any.. I'm worried for my health but I honestly can't stop.
starray · 11/10/2018 13:02
plain carbonated water or soda water. You still get the bubbly buzz without the sweet stuff. Wouldn't recommend substituting sugar with artificial sweeteners.
starray · 11/10/2018 13:04
Try 90% chocolate, cacao nibs or 85% chocolate instead of milk chocolate. You won't need so much to get that chocolate kick.
Or a chocolate milkshake - good quality dark chocolate blended with milk and a banana. (Be sparing with the banana though, as that will turn to fructose in your body ultimately)
CaptSkippy · 11/10/2018 13:14
You probably don't like the coke so much as the massive amount of sugar it contains. If you try coke zero or light than you will realise how disgusting the stuff really is. Coffee with milk has become my coke replacement. Milk has sugar, but not to the insane amounts as coke does.
As for cold beverage, you could try Spa zero calories. That has no sugar or other added sweenters and you drink it more slowly. It has some interesting flavours too. Currently my favorites are Sourcy Mango and Spa Coconut.
DinnaeKnowShitFromClay · 11/10/2018 13:16
Is it chromium tablets that you can take and it makes sugar boakworthy for long enough to give it up?
Gradually cut down and phase out.
Read about what it is actually doing to your body. That's a bucket of cold water for anyone I can tell you!

I could have written this exact post 5 months ago! I rarely drank anything other than Coke and couldn't get through a day without having several cans. I've tried many times to cut back or swap to diet which just doesn't cut it!
I went all out and cut refined sugar from my diet completely. It was the only way for me and I seem to have successfully broken the habit. I won't lie it was REALLY hard for the first 10 days but after that it was like a switch clicked and I don't have any problems now, no cravings etc.
I have lost just over 2 stone in 12 weeks and feel much better about myself. I will now let myself have an occasional can if I'm out socially but never buy it for home or if I'm by myself.
I feel your pain and frustration but it is well worth it to persevere. It is a bit like giving up smoking as I didn't want something so ridiculous to have such control over my life.
I feel far more in control of my eating in general now too which is a good side effect. It's also surprised me how OK I am about just drinking still water, I have 2-3l a day and don't often think about having anything else.
Everyone I know has been so surprised that I've done it, it sounds silly but it was a real problem so it really is a case of if I can, you can. good luck.
Toughtips · 11/10/2018 13:17
Thanks. Coke zero is vile. Although I can tolerate diet coke.
I've finished off the last bottle.
I don't have an issue with other sweet stuff. Just the coke.
GenericDietCola · 11/10/2018 13:38
Sparkling water, cold, maybe with lemon. You’ll get the fizz but without the sugar. Good luck!
SD1978 · 11/10/2018 14:13
@oigetoffmycheese- I had high hopes for this- and thought it tasted awful- I was soa disappointed as hoped it could improve my non coffee related fluid intake!
oigetoffmycheese · 11/10/2018 14:17
@SD1978 one of the flavours is horrible but some are good.
The rose lemonade one is nice.
It does stop you reaching for the coke.
