To think Gordon Brown is right about UC

Remember what happened when they tried the tax credits cuts? I think thus might be worse. And with Brexit too...but oh I forgot it is the end of Austerity. Right.

It's an embarrassing shambles and the most vulnerable in our society will be hardest hit. Austerity is bullshit anyway, a tag line or phrase that's rolled out to justify continued inequality in our country.

ChelleDawg2020 · 10/10/2018 15:37

It always makes me chuckle when Gordon Brown, Tony Blair et al complain about things the government do. You created the bloody mess in the first place! Why in God's name would anyone listen to you now?!

I don't justify the things May is doing but seriously, all Brown is doing is reminding voters that it was Labour that got us into this mess in the first place.

ilovegin112 · 10/10/2018 15:43

I wasn’t entitled to anything on the old system, I’m now getting £400 a month on uc so it’s worked for me

WhoWants2Know · 10/10/2018 15:43

I don't remember food bank usage or child poverty being anywhere near as bad when Brown was PM. Actually, I remember that KS1 had free school meals.

Vulnerable people I care for have been devastated by UC. There's an elderly couple sleeping in a bloody tent in the cemetery down the road.

I'd actually be up for a riot

Neshoma · 10/10/2018 15:45

We wouldn't need austerity if Labour hadn't spent, spent, spent.

Poll tax riots my arse - poll tax affected everyone , UC only affects those who claim. They can riot if they want but then get sanctioned for not attending a work interview and spending 8 hours not looking for a job.

AdoreTheBeach · 10/10/2018 15:53

Isn’t Gordon brown the one who just about bankrupted the country? Whose administration left the note something akin to “sorry, there’s no money”. I wouldn’t listen to a single opinion he has. He had his chance and totally mucked up.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 10/10/2018 15:56

We wouldn't need austerity if Labour hadn't spent, spent, spent.

The government is cutting funding in some places and increasing it in others. Austerity is benefitting a few at the expense of the many. It's a political decision.

Omeletteandbeans · 10/10/2018 15:59

Think a couple of posters have confused Gordon Brown with the global financial crisis.

Gordon Brown is the one who worked bloody hard to stop our banks collapsing due to their decisions to overexpose themselves to dodgy US mortgage lending. I don't think he's always right about everything but it's usually worth listening to what he has to say as he very clearly knows his shit.

Gilead · 10/10/2018 16:01

We wouldn't need austerity if Labour hadn't spent, spent, spent.

D-. Try again using empirical evidence.

Firstbornunicorn · 10/10/2018 16:08

So many people seem to think that Labour somehow caused a global recession. How important do they think the UK is?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/10/2018 16:09

That's a generous interpretation, omelette. I'm not sure they're confused.

At this point, the tories pointing the finger at the last labour government on anything to do with the economy is a bit pot/kettle/black.

Justanotherlurker · 10/10/2018 16:14

To be fair, it's just the same as a lot labour voters who parrot not true labour when arguing in an obvious partisan way ends up tiring themselves in Knott's

UnsolicitedCockPics · 10/10/2018 16:14

People won't actually riot though, it is already being rolled out in many areas. the clever thing with UC is it is being rolled out gradually, therefore it won't affect millions of people all at the same time

I think this is deliberate

YorkshirePuddingsGreatestFan · 10/10/2018 16:24

Single parent with a full time job and a mortgage. Currently claiming child benefit and a small amount of child tax credit which I do use to help with our living costs.

Under UC, I will lose most of what I currently get now.

I'm at the top end of the expected level of salary for my job. I can't take a second job as I've got two chronic illnesses and already find the job I have exhausting and a struggle some days. Losing what I claim now will cause me financial difficulties.

Yet the Tories say they are making these changes to make people better off in work Hmm

HelenaDove · 10/10/2018 16:27

This disability canpaign group summed it up for me.

Crap as the system is, I think it's a bit ridiculous to riot about benefit entitlement. What are they going to riot about - 'I'm getting free money but it's not enough'?

Agree it's inhumane and needs to be done better, but having loads of people declining to work because they CBA wasn't sustainable either. I'd be rioting for better job/education opportunities personally.

HelenaDove · 10/10/2018 16:34

www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/universal-credit-family-forced-eat-13386648 the leftover hospital food as their 6 year old son is ill with brain cancer.

HelenaDove · 10/10/2018 16:35

dont worry your little head eightoclock im sure that boys parents are too tired to protest.

HelenaDove · 10/10/2018 16:36

So how much do you pay your childminder eightoclock? Enough that they dont have to claim UC?

Believeitornot · 10/10/2018 16:38

Did they create the banking crisis @ChelleDawg2020 which required billions of ££ to bailout?

They
Did
Not

So let’s not pretend it was all labour’s fault for goodness sake

The Tories have had since 2010 to sort this out.

How much longer do you let them get away with the whole labour excuse. 8 years we’ve had and our debt has continued to go up despite massive cuts to public spending.

Please explain that logic to me.

UnsolicitedCockPics · 10/10/2018 16:38

eight o clock

do you actually know what UC is??

many, if not most people claiming will be in work. Many of them will be full time

so your comment is not only offensive but its not even factual

do you think people WANT to claim? do you even think its an option to simply not work because they "cant be arsed" ?

is it really the fault of struggling families counting every last penny that the cost of living (particularly housing) is completely disproportionate to average earnings?

and to be clear, i personally am not entitled to any benefits. DH and I pay a lot of tax, I dont begrudge the small percentage of that paying towards helping people less fortunate than me because i am not a heartless cunt

trojanpony · 10/10/2018 16:40

Gordon brown knows what a mess it will be because he started the whole fecking thing with bloody tax credits (which he knew would cause problems from the start)

Believeitornot · 10/10/2018 16:40

Maybe educate yourself @eightoclock

Most people on UC will be working

They can’t just get a better paid job

For a start, we have a mixed economy. This means that people work in different specialisms etc which pay different salaries. They can’t just “riot” for better pay when they don’t have any union backing etc.

Honestly 🙄

1tisILeClerc · 10/10/2018 16:44

Wasn't Gordon Brown's watchword 'prudence'?
While he was chancellor they work with one hand tied behind their backs and the financial crisis was GLOBAL so not specifically of his doing.
We are due another GLOBAL banking problem in the next year or two, according to world economists. That will add to the fun.
