To want a 'heavy' duvet?

SistersOfPercy · 10/10/2018 13:48

Looking around for a winter duvet and reminiscing back to my childhood, snuggled under layers of heavy blankets and a big heavy duvet.
Every duvet I look it boasts it's 'Lightweight'. I don't want bloody lightweight I want to feel pinned down and snuggly.

Has anyone actually got a proper heavy duvet they can recommend?

I have a lovely 13.5 tog duvet which feels heavy. From John Lewis I think.

QuaterMiss · 10/10/2018 13:57

You want wool! Winter weight.

Not at home so can’t check where mine’s from but several suppliers. (Look online - not department stores.)

I too remember the comforting weightiness of proper blankets. A wool duvet replicates that. And blocks out noise. I could never go back to any other filling.

chickenloverwoman · 10/10/2018 14:04

I use a lightweight duvet with added quilt/throw over the top. Works for me!

SistersOfPercy · 10/10/2018 14:16

ooh thanks QuaterMiss I'll have a look now. Never even considered wool!

Chickenloverwoman I've tried throws and blankets but they always seem to end up on the floor.

I have to have a super heavy duvet too even in the height of summer or drives my husband mad. I managed to get one from Debenhams in the end. If I couldn’t find a heavy one my next option was a dual one, it’s two duvets that you separate so one in summer and then two in winter so you would have to duvets in your duvet cover, I saw those in Debenhams too so that could be an option if they still do them.

QuaterMiss · 10/10/2018 14:23

I think this company has been well reviewed on MN in the past.

And these seem good value.

Don’t know anything about these.

Jammiebammie · 10/10/2018 14:25

I always wonder what duvets they use in certain hotels as they’re so heavy and almost sound crinkly as you use them, no help sorry, but I’d like a heavy one too so watching this thread!

pandarific · 10/10/2018 14:30

I have a feather one which I love, believe it was from house of Fraser in their blue cross sale years ago.

DH hates it because feathers work their way out and poke him however just so you're aware this is a possibility - doesn't bother me though! Grin

pandarific · 10/10/2018 14:32

It's also quite good as it's a two in one - a winter weight one and a summer weight one, and you can attach them together with poppers to create a Serious Winter duvet, for GoT style winter weather.

chickenloverwoman · 10/10/2018 14:34

I find having a bigger duvet and quilt/throw/blanket on me , than the bed size I'm in, works well, the extra hanging down either size adds to it staying put and makes it feel more cosy iyswim?

Otherwise wool filled duvet, 13.5 today is pretty heavy!
I love my wool filled pillows, covered in cotton cases. Really comfy!

HumpHumpWhale · 10/10/2018 14:35

I have a 15 tog one I got from Argos 10 years ago that weighs a ton. It's feather and down. They have a few 15 tog options at the moment.

SistersOfPercy · 10/10/2018 14:40

interesting ideas here thanks.

I agree some hotel duvets are so lovely and rustly and heavy. leaning towards wool now. Just need to persuade DH 😳

Oh I'd love to be pinned down by a duvet. Sadly menopausal hot flushes linger and I am too hot with anything but the thinnest lightest covers. I bought a wool duvet after reading about them on MN. It's certainly heavy but it had to go after one night as it was too hot. Got it from here where they do good offers.

Onthebrink87 · 10/10/2018 14:52

Have you tried a weighted blanket? I haven't myself so can't offer a recommendation but I've read really good reviews so might be worth a Google?

2muchstress · 10/10/2018 14:54

I too like the heavy feeling of covers at night. And apparently it’s recognised as being beneficial in cases of insomnia and anxiety.

OlderThanAverageforMN · 10/10/2018 14:57

Just had this issue with my DD who is always cold, and also gets really anxious and wanted the security of something weighty. I just got her the combination one from Debenhams 4.5 + 9.5. It is really lofty but also reassuringly heavy, she loves it. The more weighty duvets have a higher feather content, the lighter ones have more down, and duck feather is heavier than goose feather !

SistersOfPercy · 10/10/2018 15:03

Gah why isn't there a way I could turn up in John Lewis and lie under their duvets for an hour to get an idea.
Might have to consider the blanket idea again as slightly worried it might be too hot.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 10/10/2018 15:07

Ohh, we bought a heavy crinkly one not long ago - its a dorma one. Not wool though as it makes me itch!

MrsStrowman · 10/10/2018 15:10

Feather and down tend to be heavier than synthetic. I work away a lot and have an odd preference in hotels for a heavy duvet and the AC cranked up....

SistersOfPercy · 10/10/2018 15:13

Not odd at all MrsStrowman I like our bedroom baltic with a very warm duvet.
Poor DH 😂

zozozoo · 10/10/2018 15:13

Wool all the way. So heavy, I love it. Comes in two halves so you can make it lighter for warmer seasons. The wool is the filling, the outer material is cotton. Got it in Holland though, the make is Texeler. I would make a special trip though if it ever died on me!

OlderThanAverageforMN · 10/10/2018 15:15

I keep my 12 tog duvet on all year round - had it for 15 years (!), you can't get 12 tog anymore, but it is perfect.

Just checked for you OP - Debenhams still has a sale on duvets... I got DD's 20% off.

Louiselouie0890 · 10/10/2018 15:21

Yes I wanted one for anxiety they're like 100+ on amazon. We found one in tesco for 40 King size. It's so God damb heavy and feather filled its amazing. Makes we want to go bed so much its unhealthy😂 we got kind size so we had a bit to snuggle up in without the dreaded tug of war

GooseDownCreek · 10/10/2018 15:33

MrsStrowman oh yes perfect! I dream of sleeping outside in the open with a huge snuggly duvet. would probably still be too hot.

SistersOfPercy I solved the DH problem with two single duvets. He gets a heavy weight winter one and I have a 3 tog.

agnurse · 10/10/2018 16:00

If your DH is worried about wool you can purchase a cover for your duvet. This way he doesn't have to worry about a hole in it and the wool coming out. (My husband is autistic and doesn't do well with wool because he's hypersensitive. We were given a wool-filled duvet as a wedding gift, along with a cover for it. It works very well for us.)
