To want a 'heavy' duvet?

SistersOfPercy · 10/10/2018 13:48

Looking around for a winter duvet and reminiscing back to my childhood, snuggled under layers of heavy blankets and a big heavy duvet.
Every duvet I look it boasts it's 'Lightweight'. I don't want bloody lightweight I want to feel pinned down and snuggly.

Has anyone actually got a proper heavy duvet they can recommend?

I have a throw over my duvet, has the required weight!

We treated ourselves to a wool duvet from Dunelm this spring and it's been lovely. It's more breathable than the previous feathers, and because it's heavy it doesn't wander round the bed as much.

The only drawback is finding a launderette with a huge machine for when the cat occasionally throws up on it, curse her.

Bombaybunty · 10/10/2018 16:11

We have a Soak & Sleep wool duvet. It's quite thin but very heavy and warm.
We love it, I would highly recommend it!

SistersOfPercy · 10/10/2018 16:11

Interesting Damefanny might take a trip to Dunelm for duvet fondling purposes 😂

Think it was by Fogarty. We got DH a matching pillow too.

teaandtoast · 10/10/2018 16:25

I've got a wool duvet with the highest tog. It's not particularly heavy and it's not particularly warm, either! I was very disappointed.

I can remember when feather duvets first came out and they were really heavy. You got in and although they were cold to start with, they heated up almost immediately with your body warmth and kept the warmth too.

chickenloverwoman · 10/10/2018 16:31

My ones are Fogerty from Dunelm. Really wonderful.

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/10/2018 16:47

If you put a heavy cover over a duvet, doesn't it squash it down and adversely affect its insulation properties?

SistersOfPercy · 10/10/2018 17:00

Exactly that tea. I recall as a child it was lovely and cool to get into and then the weight just warmed you.

Of course I suspect my fond memories are helped by my Mum tucking me in tight which would add to the weight. ponders getting DH to tuck me in

Another one for wool duvets here. Ours are fogarty.

haba · 10/10/2018 18:25

Just placemarking for later... several people in this household need heavy duvets!

MustBeThin · 10/10/2018 18:41

I got an All Seasons wool duvet from Soak and Sleep 2 years ago and I love it so much. It's made up of two different weight duvets that tie together. It feels so heavy and it keeps me toasty warm all winter. Grin I'll never go back to a puffy feather duvet, I love how flat and heavy the wool ones are.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 10/10/2018 18:45

I wouldn't worry about them being called "lightweight", OP. They just say that because it's what most people want. Unless you are buying 100% Siberian goosedown (lovely but cruel) you are doomed to a heavy duvet whatever you do.

I recently got a Fogarty 9 tog duvet which is like being trapped under a bus, so that might be a good brand to try.

PeridotCricket · 10/10/2018 18:46

Soak and sleep wool duvet. Fab and never too hot.

PeridotCricket · 10/10/2018 18:47

Also wool v good for menopause I found....

agnurse · 10/10/2018 19:34

You don't have to put a heavy cover on a duvet. Our cover is actually pretty light. Using a cover can also be helpful in case the cat barfs on it - you can just wash the cover rather than lugging the whole duvet to the launderette.

Beeblot · 10/10/2018 20:01

I love my wool duvet. It's a Baavet. Beyond fabulous! Not cheap but they have a bargain box where you can get seconds. Mine was almost half price. I'm not sure what was wrong with it...something to do with the bobbin being changed but I've not noticed the faults. Their service is amazing. I called to ask what weight to get for our house and the lady, her name was Ellie, said she would call me back when a good one came up in the bargain box. She called me the next day and the day after that, I had my duvet. Amazing.

Oobis · 10/10/2018 20:03

Do you use a top sheet? A well tucked one might do the trick and not overheat you?

Your thread reminded me of childhood sleepovers at my wonderful grandma's - it was top sheet and a pile of mostly hand crocheted blankets on top, with an electric blanket to spoil me in winter time. I bloody miss her, such happy memories though, thank you

Stinkbomb · 10/10/2018 20:44

I have a gorgeous feather one from Ikea which is just gorgeously heavy.

Threeminis · 10/10/2018 20:44

I have a similar problem op. I would LOVE a heavy duvet, but I get too hot at night. Currently have a 4.5 tog and sleep with the window open and a fan on - I'm 33 so not yet menopausal I hope
I might have a look at the weighted ones on amazon. Thanks for this tread! Watching with interest.

Athena51 · 10/10/2018 20:49

I have a Baavet wool duvet. They are pricey but it is worth every penny. It's cosy, heavy, it smells lovely and wool is a temperature regulator not an insulator so you don't get hotter and hotter but stay at an optimum temperature.

I've never slept better and I'd never buy any other kind. Sorry. I'm a bit evangelical about them.

combatbarbie · 10/10/2018 21:30

I have the fogarty one from Dunelm, it's hollowfibre but is super cosy in winter especially with high thread count linen on it, feels like a hotel x

Bluebolt · 10/10/2018 21:35

My DS2 has Autism so has a weighted blanket, I liked it so much I bought myself one. Just love it.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 10/10/2018 21:50

I love when I put the winter duvet on, I sleep so much better.

I have had a couple of good nights, because dh has been on nights and I have thrown a patchwork quilt comforter thing over and a cotton throw over the bottom....heavy covers and no one fidgeting!!

tor8181 · 10/10/2018 22:04

we have 2 13.5 togs from argos in one cover as my child likes pressure because of his disabilities and it was cheaper to get 2 quilts that a expensive high tog
