To ask how much you have in savings...

We have just transferred virtually ALL our money over to our solicitor for our first house. I have gone from having nearly £60k to much much less than that.

I know everyone does it haha, but just feeling un-nerved at losing that nice safety blanket and I will be immediately starting to build it back up again.

Just interested in how much people have in their savings accounts?

Nothing.

SoftlyCatchyMonkey1 · 09/10/2018 20:28

Nothing - just bought a house which has wiped me out

mayhew · 09/10/2018 20:29

It's quite normal to be hollowed out when buying a house. That's what you saved it for!

NotUmbongoUnchained · 09/10/2018 20:30

In the triple figures. We’re not touching it. I want to be one of those crazy old ladies who wears fur coats and drinks champagne everyday and is just fab and glamorous. So I need lots of dolla.

PipLongStockings · 09/10/2018 20:31

Minus £3k

Belindabelle · 09/10/2018 20:33

Well as I am nearly 50 and have been home owner for 28 years, I have rather a lot in savings. When I had just bought my first house at 22 I think I had about #2.50.

LaurieMarlow · 09/10/2018 20:34

£50k. But it's pretty normal to be wiped out after buying a house. We certainly were.

MissConductUS · 09/10/2018 20:36

Most of our savings are in retirement accounts, which we can take money from but then have to pay income taxes on. It's quite normal to be zeroed out when you buy a house.

Fatasfook · 09/10/2018 20:37

I’m in my overdraft and have no savings

NotMyCircusMonkeys · 09/10/2018 20:38

£25k. Just about to buy our first house so will be back to zero pretty quickly. Hopefully should still be able to save around £400 a month when we move in so can begin to build it back up.

cushioncovers · 09/10/2018 20:39

£8000 on credit cards and no savings. Single parent. Homeowner. 2 teens.

MyBrexitUnicornDied · 09/10/2018 20:40

About 9k in savings and more in premium bonds (so also savings).

I too had fuck all after buying a house. It’s worth it though.

Poisongirl81 · 09/10/2018 20:41

12k...home owner

MagentaRocks · 09/10/2018 20:41

About 5.5k I think. It would be more but we overpay the mortgage by £400 a month and have recently had to pay out for a couple of holidays. Will probably have very little in a few months as will be remortgaging and want to reduce it as much as possible. We do manage to save a lot each month though so it helps to build it up when we reduce the amount we have. We spend a lot on extended family so will never be rich.

Homemadearmy · 09/10/2018 20:42

I’m in the minus too and not a home owner

Ceebeegee · 09/10/2018 20:43

£200.

RedPandaMama · 09/10/2018 20:43

We've just bought a house and put £22k down on it. I have about £800 and DP has about £5k. But we owe DPs parents £5k too. So basically nothing!

I'm 22 and he's 28 so we have lots of time to save back up.

Omeletteandbeans · 09/10/2018 20:44

£6.76.

It's cancelled out by credit cards. I keep it to remind me not to overspend on cheese frivolous shit.

MrsPworkingmummy · 09/10/2018 20:44

None, but we have a lovely house with nearly £200,000 equity so could sell up to dramatically improve our lifestyle if we wanted. We have about 20,000 debt (finance agreements, a loan and credit cards) but manage everything each month.

SweetSummerchild · 09/10/2018 20:45

These threads always go the same way.

One group of posters says “Nothing”.

The other group of posters says “£350k” (or thereabouts)

Like everything on MN, there’s little middle-ground. It’s not representative of ‘normal’ at all.

BoomTish · 09/10/2018 20:45

£90k

Santaclarita · 09/10/2018 20:46

Got a bit saved up, but having to spend it soon on a new bed, tumble dryer and other stuff. Might save some though to buy Christmas decorations and presents.

RiddleyW · 09/10/2018 20:46

In the triple figures

So more than a £100! Shock

Barker26 · 09/10/2018 20:46

Oh man that feeling of transferring the deposit... Its a horrible but great feeling at the same time! We bought our house in May and now have 3k in savings after paying off our credit cards

CherryPavlova · 09/10/2018 20:47

Enough but then we’re headed towards retirement and our children are grown. It’s not a fair comparison.
