to think the mini pill Cerelle is causing my mood swings and abruptiveness?

Hi All

Long story short, I was on Microgynon 30 for 17 years, had no issues with it, all was fine, I enjoyed the 7 day break and getting my period until recently about once a month I started getting a migraine. Not a full blown one as I always caught into time. Went to the Dr's for my pill check, explained this about the migraines and she changed my pill to the Mini Pill called Cerelle and ever since I have been so snappy, moody, emotional, feel like no one loves me (feeling very sorry for myself basically), I've become very abrupt when people speak to me, a bit of a pain in the arse. I've only been on it for four weeks and although I haven't bled yet (I've read some people bleed and some don't) I feel like I'm becoming quite depressed on it....My poor husband is receiving the brunt of it all and I can only think its the change in my pill....

Has anyone else ever had these feelings whilst being on Cerelle? Shall I persevere or ring the doctor and get it changed?

I was suffering from a week of 'oestrogen withdrawal' migraines every month so was switched to the progesterone only pill. It was called Cerazette and it's been fantastic now for the last 6 years or so. Periods are a thing of the past!

Every year or so though, when I get a repeat prescription, the surgery switches it to Cerelle because it's far cheaper. Every time without fail I've had mood swings, dizzy spells and breakthrough bleeding and had to raise hell to get switched back.

I did some internet research and Cerelle is known for causing difficult side effects so if I were you I'd make a fuss and demand Cerazette, as it's far better. Good luck!

Ah thanks for replying! I thought I was going mad but I'm definitely more snappy and do you know when you come across those awkward argumentative people who you think "god you are so rude"....thats what I've become like! I even started an argument with my boss last week just because I felt I wanted too - this is so not like me at all...

I feel terribly emotional - I'm going to give them a ring now.

Thanks

I hated Cerelle, it made me irritable and gave me dark moods.

I also switched to Cerazette.

barnacharmer · 09/10/2018 12:54

Progesterone only pills caused me to be very argumentative with depression. I have never felt anything like it. I had cerazette so do some research into the side effects of both. It took a couple of months before I felt back to myself after I stopped taking it. I'd never take any progesterone only pills ever again

HopefullyAnonymous · 09/10/2018 12:57

I also was on cerazette for a while and felt positively murderous. It was awful. Progesterone only doesn’t agree with me.

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 09/10/2018 13:01

Was on the progesterone only pill for a very short period of time. It was bad. I was incredibly moody and emotional. Came off it and felt vastly better.

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 09/10/2018 13:04

I'm in my first week of taking cerelle and so far I haven't noticed any mood swings, or no more than usual!
I have started bleeding a bit today (have taken 5 pills) no idea if it's my period early or if it's spotting.
I'm hoping I don't have many unpleasant side effects as the next thing to try is the mirena coil which I'm not sure about

flowerpower18 · 09/10/2018 13:05

I've just called the Doctor, explained my situation and she's going to speak to the Doctor and ring me back. I told her I have my repeat prescription slip for my original pill. I've booked myself in for an eye test which I did on the same day they changed my pill as I think its more than likely I'm getting the "mild" migraine because of the environment I'm sat in for 8 hours a day! Office, bright lights, different desk with different lighting etc. I'm pretty sure (although I'm no expert) that if Microgynon was going to cause me serious issues it would've started 17 years ago?!?

I feel awful on this pill.

I had really awful mood swings when I started cerezette after having a baby. I would get so angry and upset for very little reason. I thought it was PND until I stopped the pill (just to rule it out as a cause) and found my mood improved almost over night. I too was on microgynon previously with no ill effect (couldn't take it due to breastfeeding) but now I am very wary of going back on any hormonal contraceptive.

EnglishRose13 · 09/10/2018 13:10

Cerazette was awful for me and I asked to be put back on Cerelle. Just over a month in and I feel better.

The nurse argued that they are exactly the same pill. Clearly, they aren't!

ChipsAndKetchup · 09/10/2018 13:13

Cerelle made me come off the pill altogether. I was on cilest pre kids but then the doctor told me I was too old and put me on Cerelle. I was a horrific bitch. I lasted 3 weeks and threw them in the bin.

fassone · 09/10/2018 13:17

Cerelle and Cerazette contain the same progestin, desogestrel, in 75 micrograms.

I took the progestin only pill once and almost lost my mind. I binned it after 30 days. It’s definitely not for everyone.

flowerpower18 · 09/10/2018 13:17

Wow, I'm so glad it wasn't just me thinking I was going insane! I've done so much research on it too and the effects of taking a one hormone pill compared to a two hormone pill!

Thanks All

@fassone you're right, Cerelle and Cerazette contain the same quantities of the same hormone, but I'm told by medical professionals that the carrier ingredients are different. Cerelle is cheaper for the NHS as it's ingredients are not good quality.

FluffyPersian · 09/10/2018 13:36

I was on Cerezette for years and had a break - when I went back to the GP, I was prescribed Cerelle and when I said that's not the one I used to have, I was told 'Yes it is.. it's exactly the same'

Except it wasn't. I got horrific side effects on it... I'm really, really sensitive to hormones and Cerezette is the only one I've ever been able to cope with (can't take combined pill due to it contributing to uterus erosion's). When I went back to the GP, the Doctor said she couldn't actually prescribe Cerezette as it had actually been taken off as an option on the system - so if you want to prescribe progesterone only, you ONLY can prescribe Cerelle.....

So I went online to the Lloyds pharmacy and paid £30 for 6 months supply of Cerezette and have done this for the past 18 months. Having another discussion with another Dr - she said she could make the prescription generic - e.g. just 'progesterone only' as opposed to a brand and I could get Cerezette by requesting it from the Pharmacy, but as I've just got another 6 months, I've not tried it yet.

havingabadhairday · 09/10/2018 13:50

I was a complete bitch on Cerazette, nearly ruined my relationship with DH.

Not saying you shouldn't give Cerazette a try, but I switched to a 'standard' mini pill (where you have to take it at the same time every day) and went back to normal.

User123640872 · 09/10/2018 14:04

I take Cerelle and in the year I've been taking it I've had depression and mood swings almost constantly, I used to get the injection but they've got a shortage where I am so that isn't an option at the minute but in Jan. when I've finished my prescription I think I'll be finding somewhere where I can get depo! The only good thing I've found about it is that I'm a bit hit and miss with taking it but you have 12 hours after the missed pill time to take it, where as with others it's around 3

flowerpower18 · 09/10/2018 14:20

Yeah I made my first boo boo this morning! I went to take my pill and realised I hadn't taken yesterdays too so had to take yesterdays and today! Not sure what effect this will have but I know I wont be as protected! No sex for me for a few nights! Sorry husband! Needs a must!
