Was I or the taxi man being unreasonable

Paddington23 · 08/10/2018 18:11

I normally cycle home but due to injuring my foot on the weekend got a taxi home it’s a 20 mins walk or around a £4 taxi. When I went to pay him I apologised for only having a £20 note for my 4.20 fair I apologised he was so angry was saying how unfair it was start of his shift he I would use all his change. Said I would have a look in my bag and coat pocket I managed to gather up 4.60 in change but it took me a whole bag was full of work stuff and change was all in the bottom of my bag and I only had a few coins in my coat pocket. I tried to be as quick as I could but he kept hurrying me saying he could of been to (insert name of place) and back in the time I was taking just of taken 3 mins max. He then huffed and when I handed him the money he said how much is there I said 4.50 or 4.60 is that correct he said I don’t no I don’t have time to count and when I said keep the change he said i don’t care about change

You know what to do next time.
You can’t account For the moods of others so don’t stress. He was a grumpy ole boot.

GreenLantern53 · 08/10/2018 18:14

WHere are you that cabs are so cheap? i live in london and a 5 minute drive cost me £5.50

anyway i would have made sure i had change personally.

Userplusnumbers · 08/10/2018 18:14

He was being an arsehole.

You were being unreasonable not to book through an app, no cash involved, and the drivers get rated so generally don't dick you around.

ConfusedMum82 · 08/10/2018 18:15

Christ, yanbu, he was rude!
It's not your fault you were his first fare.
If he works for a firm I'd be tempted to contact them. I've paid in notes for a smaller fare before when they've not had a card reader and never had that. Worst way he could've just given you £15 back in notes as you'd have given a tip no doubt if he wasn't so rude.
Don't let his rudeness get you down OP.

possumgoddess · 08/10/2018 18:15

Both. The taxi driver was rude, but you should have looked in your bag for change before or during the journey in case you could pay your fare without the taxi driver having to give you change for a £20. (I don't see why he couldn't carry a bit more change though!)

Easty1000 · 08/10/2018 18:16

Don’t think you were being unreasonable but i’d have probably said ‘give me change for a fiver’ ie given a biggish % tip for a low fare / inconvenience of handing over a £20.

U of the taxi driver to be a miserable git

MsOliphant · 08/10/2018 18:16

I would have rounded it up to a fiver, was it coins or notes he was annoyed about? Giving back two notes shouldn’t have been a huge issue.

Cheap taxi though.

Seniorschoolmum · 08/10/2018 18:17

YAnbu. He’s just being grumpy.

Any taxi driver who can’t muster a £5 and a £10 note in change at the start of a shift is either pretty incompetent or trying to pressure you into giving him a big tip.

Aragog · 08/10/2018 18:19

You were being unreasonable not to book through an app, no cash involved,

Our local taxi form, although we book directly through their app, only accepts cash payment.

cansu · 08/10/2018 18:21

He was being an idiot. He should have been able to give you change for that. I think your mistake was apologising to him.

gamerchick · 08/10/2018 18:22

Our local taxi form, although we book directly through their app, only accepts cash payment.

So does ours. Book through an app indeed Grin not everywhere does that shit yanno!

I would have given him a decent tip but I'm in the minority on here for tipping I think.

rosamacrose · 08/10/2018 18:22

What MrsOliphant said.
I feel for you, though, op.
I do not wish to be in a confined space with an angry man.

SpoonBlender · 08/10/2018 18:23

He was a prick. You were poorly organised. Together... you fight crime?

gamerchick · 08/10/2018 18:23

We don't even have an app. It's ring the rank like the olden days.

OutPinked · 08/10/2018 18:23

YANBU, he was a grump and I would avoid that company in future as a result. Many taxi firms have an app now so you can pay by card, I do that as I never carry cash.

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 08/10/2018 18:24

And taxi drivers are surprised that apps such as Uber are killing their business.

yellowsparkles · 08/10/2018 18:24

He was rude!

WomanWithAltitude · 08/10/2018 18:27

He was more than rude.... he sounds like a bully! It's not unreasonable to expect taxi drivers to have change. And refusing to give you your 40p change was really nasty. Can you report him to his firm?

BlueJava · 08/10/2018 18:29

Why do you need change for a taxi - just use contactless?

rosamacrose · 08/10/2018 18:30

Out here in the wilds of swede-bashing land, we have:
A rank.
Mostly independent drivers.
None (that I've met) take cards.
App? What? They've been driving long round these parts and never seen the need for no app.
When the rank is empty, good luck with that.
(Lucky to even have a rank)
Grin

HilaryBriss · 08/10/2018 18:35

Taxis ouside of large cities don't tend to take cards at all never mind contactless, they certainly don't where I live.

Extremely rude, I have been getting taxis for a while as the bus service is unreliable and can't gurantee that they will be there on time, I have encountered a few grumpy ones, but never like that.

Aeroflotgirl · 08/10/2018 18:43

Our taxi company does not take cards, so you have to carry cash with you.

Willow2017 · 08/10/2018 18:56

Wow!

Not all of us live in big cities.
Some of us use local private hire companies.

No app, no card readers just real money! And no.problem with change as they dont expect people to have the exact money down to the last few pence on them every time.

Ffs "i do it this way so anyone who doesn't do it exactly the same must be doing it wrong" and obviously stupid " mentality is rife on mn.
