To walk out of work. Will they fire me?

AtSea1979 · 06/10/2018 22:45

I left work today. I had an accident as was being sick and ran out after that. I messaged boss to say I had to pop home and would be back then I called an hour later to say I wouldn’t be back after all as still being sick. Been poorly for a while and I know colleagues have been bitching about the amount of time off I’ve already had. I work in care so they can easily twist it and say I neglected my duties and walked out. Not told boss why I left just that I was poorly, again.
What should I tell them tomorrow?

What do you mean you had an accident? You really shouldn't have left without speaking to whoever was in charge of the shift.

Floyella · 06/10/2018 22:48

Tell them exactly what happened.

I doubt they could fire you over this, but they might start disciplinary proceedings which would make future problems more serious.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 06/10/2018 22:48

The truth?

Crystalblue13 · 06/10/2018 22:50

Did you tell any other colleague before leaving or just run straight out?

ENormaSnob · 06/10/2018 22:50

What amount of time have you had off so far?

AtSea1979 · 06/10/2018 22:53

No I just ran out.

I’ve had about a dozen times off in past couple of years, but they group together requests for time off (e.g leaving an hour early for appointments etc) and recently a couple of weeks off. Went back last week and then today.

NoHufflefucksGivenMugglefucker · 06/10/2018 22:54

An accident like sicked on your shirt or shat your pants? If it was the latter I would have walked out too

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 06/10/2018 22:55

What does your contract/policy say you should do in these circumstances? Saying you’d be back was weird and looks a bit flaky.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 06/10/2018 22:56

You vomited, and then just ran off?

tazzle22 · 06/10/2018 22:57

No matter the type of " accident" you had you should not have run out .... leaving colleagues and the people you were supprting in the lurch like that is irresponsible.

At the very least you should have told manager who could have provided you with support land if need be make the decision to send you home and get someone to cover you.

Depending on what ypu were doing at gje time you may well have neglected your duties and if you lwent home without informing a senior staff member you could be in very setious trouble.

As to what you tell them tomorrow.... well unless there are some mitigating circumstances you havent told us you could ble disciplined for this. I certainly would do it.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 06/10/2018 22:57

You can't just run out of work! You need to tell whoever is in charge at that moment that you are leaving. By running out you have neglected your duties.

They may not sack you but I would at least expect disciplinary!

garethsouthgatesmrs · 06/10/2018 22:58

I messaged boss to say I had to pop home and would be back this is your mistake, you should have told the truth

AtSea1979 · 06/10/2018 22:59

Theres nothing in my contract that covers running off when taken ill.
I was hoping that a quick shower, change of clothes and some medication and i’d be back an hour later. Live 10 mins drive from work.
But I felt worse so called and said I wouldn’t be back after all as was poorly.

OP posts:
Crystalblue13 · 06/10/2018 22:59

Hmm you should’ve found someone to quickly tell first and then ran out if you had to. But if I shit my pants I would probably run out too op!

SillySallySingsSongs · 06/10/2018 23:00

You will probably be disciplined yes.

MintyJones · 06/10/2018 23:02

Have you posted about all this before? Time off sick etc? A dozen times in two years is quite a lot so maybe consider if this is the job for you? You'd maybe feel happier and more settled in a place where your colleagues weren't bitching about you

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 06/10/2018 23:02

Theres nothing in my contract that covers running off when taken ill

Did I really just read that?!?! Hmm No, your contract won't specify it because they'd expect adults to well, act like adults.

You ran home to change and have a shower and thought you'd go back after? That's just not normal thinking.

If you have D&V you shouldn't be working.
You don't run off from work without telling anyone.
You don't nip home for a shower and change of clothes.
Hmm

Number12 · 06/10/2018 23:06

Oh you poor thing op. Horrible situation. Could you ring your line manager for a chat and explain? If their not Happy, what can you Do?! You need an honest chat with manager. Hope your better soon

AtSea1979 · 06/10/2018 23:07

Someone asked up thread what my contract said about it. Hence my response.
I don’t have a sickness bug. If I didn’t work every time I was sick I wouldn’t work at all. Did you mean to be so harsh?

OP posts:
Celebelly · 06/10/2018 23:07

Although if someone had shit their pants, I'm not sure I'd want them hanging around to tell me Grin

A guy I worked with years ago stood up in the office one day and said 'I've shit myself and have to go home' and then just left. Not one person would have tried to stop him!

I think if it's a one-off and you explain to your boss then it'll be fine. If one of my staff had had done this then I wouldn't really have been angry about it if it was something unusual for them or out of character as it would obviously be something fairly major to have caused it. If it's a pattern of behaviour then that would be different.

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 06/10/2018 23:07

So you’ve had about a dozen days off in two years and then recently had another two weeks? Is it a reoccurring health issue?

AtSea1979 · 06/10/2018 23:09

Thanks number12 I will try and speak to my boss in private and just be honest then, no matter how embarrassing Sad

OP posts:
Nottheduchessofcambridge · 06/10/2018 23:10

Having a cold and still going to work is one thing, if you are vomiting and suffering from dihorrea it’s another and you shouldn’t be in work.

cookiesandchocolate · 06/10/2018 23:11

You were going to go back to work after D&V????? And you work in care. Do you work with elderly or vulnerable adults.

That is just ridiculous

ENormaSnob · 06/10/2018 23:12

Tbh, you sound v unreliable.

I'd be looking at the best way to get rid.
