To walk out of work. Will they fire me?

I left work today. I had an accident as was being sick and ran out after that. I messaged boss to say I had to pop home and would be back then I called an hour later to say I wouldn’t be back after all as still being sick. Been poorly for a while and I know colleagues have been bitching about the amount of time off I’ve already had. I work in care so they can easily twist it and say I neglected my duties and walked out. Not told boss why I left just that I was poorly, again.
What should I tell them tomorrow?

That’s reassuring to know celebelly
No duchess not reoccurring as in I haven’t had it until a few weeks back and it’s now being investigated at hospital next week which boss knows. The other absences where things like requesting time of for DD assembly, requesting to leave an hour early for Gp appointment, days off when DS or DD poorly etc

cookies why is it ridiculous when I’m not contagious?

Surely, if you work in care, you aren't supposed to be there at all if you've got s&d - to protect the vulnerable clients? Aren't you supposed to leave it for 48 hours after being sick?

categed · 06/10/2018 23:16

When i worked in care it would have neen gross misconduct as it would in teaching. If you have potentially put a client at risk by leaving without informing anyone. E.g. in a fire you clear area x or person y is waiting for medication from you then you will more than likely be disiplined. I would have been sacked due to the risk to clients but it depends on staffing and expectations.
In my job now we all have been peed on pooped on been covered in sick periods floided without warning. No one would ever leave without informing a senior member of staff.
Be honest with your boss, but be prepared to be questioned.

unfortunateevents · 06/10/2018 23:22

You live 10 mins drive from work so the minimum time you could have been gone, allowing for changing clothes and showering, was 30 mins and likely more. What were you thinking of, just running out? You left a care setting short-staffed without anyone having any idea that they needed to make sure your work was covered? Apart from anything else, if someone at my workplace just went missing it would spark a search while everyone else tried to ascertain whether they had fallen, locked themselves in somewhere etc? Yes, I should think you will be disciplined.

Bunnybigears · 06/10/2018 23:22

I phoned my boss from the toilets once because I was ill and hadn't managed to get there in time. She bought my bag and coat and passed them under the door so I could make a quick getaway. Bosses are human too but you have to be honest.

wafflyversatile · 06/10/2018 23:22

I would hope they would understand especially as your boss knows you are under medical investigation for it already.

I'm not sure why people are being so harsh.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 06/10/2018 23:22

I’m really confused here. Did you shit yourself? Were you puking? Did you just run out and not go back cos you were ‘poorly’?

AtSea1979 · 06/10/2018 23:24

unfortunate I pulled over and left a message for my boss within 5 minutes of leaving so no there wouldn’t have been a search party.

AtSea1979 · 06/10/2018 23:25

waffly I hope so but it sounds like i’m going to be disciplined. Hopefully they won’t sack me but it sounds like they could.

If you are ill then you are ill. Did you say anything to your boss when you left? I really don't think you can be sacked or disciplined. A dozens days off in 2 years is nothing.

You need to be honest with your manager. Ask for their support during this difficult time. How long have you worked there?

cookiesandchocolate · 06/10/2018 23:27

Atsea.....

If you have D&V then the rule is 48 hours after you were last sick. How do you know you aren't contagious.

Ridiculous

AtSea1979 · 06/10/2018 23:30

cookies because tests have been run already.
I think you are being ridiculous, making wild assumptions. If everyone with IBS or gastritis didn’t work for 48 hours after symptoms then there would be a lot of sick days all round. Common sense has to prevail.
Clearly I messed up...literally.

AtSea1979 · 06/10/2018 23:32

lost I didn’t see my boss on the way out the door. I rang and left a message with reception 5 mins later saying let boss know I needed to pop home as I was poorly and I’ll be back soon.

EilaLila · 06/10/2018 23:33

Do you have D&v or are you vomiting due to another known condition that may be long term?

MargarineandButter · 06/10/2018 23:33

If I didn’t work every time I was sick I wouldn’t work at all.

What? Are you permanently sick? That doesn’t sound good

Gazelda · 06/10/2018 23:33

Tell boss the truth.
But in all honesty, she/he might be considering whether you are right for the role - it's one thing to have a high absence record, but on a completely different level to walk out and leave a voicemail message.
How do you know she/he received the message?
Was there sufficient staff cover to support the people at the care setting?
In any case, it sounds as though you are suffering something quite debilitating and upsetting. I hope the investigations lead to a speedy recovery.

cookiesandchocolate · 06/10/2018 23:33

Hardly making a wild assumption when you say you ran out of working having either shat yourself or puked, leaving your work place a person down.

So no, it's not a wild assumption. You are drip feeding and being deliberately antagonistic

EilaLila · 06/10/2018 23:34

Sorry cross posted x

NoMudNoLotus · 06/10/2018 23:34

I wouldn't want you working for my service users.

Its really irresponsible, unsafe and selfish to just leave.

I would be looking to discipline you .

ENormaSnob · 06/10/2018 23:36

What tests have been run?

Nhs suggests 48hours post last episode of d&v.

If you shit yourself, surely you'd do your best to clean up then seek a colleague to tell them you were unwell?

Candelabra75 · 06/10/2018 23:36

You let your boss know you had had to leave in an emergency and then spoke to your boss to explain you wouldn't be able to come back in because you were sick - that seems a reasonable and responsible way to behave to me. For the safety of clients and colleagues I think if you had been sick it was the most sensible thing to do to leave work immediately and contact them by phone. Who cares what colleagues are saying - as long as you are honest with your boss about the nature of your illness then that is all that matters. Whether you can be let go for being ill a lot I think depends on your contract and employment status. If you are concerned about losing your job then speak to Citizens Advice Bureau for advice. Good luck

WaitrosePigeon · 06/10/2018 23:38

You just left? What about your residents? I don’t get it.

categed · 06/10/2018 23:39

Is your boss understanding? Do you have a good relationship with them and have you had any issues or disiplinaries in the past?
You would have been sacked in my care role and disciplined for gross misconduct in my job now. But that doesn't mean you will.
Did you leave any client or staff member in a potentially unsafe situation by leaving? E.g. missed meds, moving and handling issues or cause anyone to question the care of your clients? I have had ibs for years and mine changes. I get no warning at the moment so always carry Imodium instand. 4-6 of them before work normally slows it down enough to cope.

EilaLila · 06/10/2018 23:39

I just read you work in care. It wouldn’t be twisted, it would be correct. You were wrong.
