... to be ridiculously excited about my new dishwasher?

We moved into our house almost a year ago and finally have got round to arranging/been able to afford a dishwasher. It's arriving on Wednesday and I actually feel like I'm waiting for Christmas. We had one in our last house and being without has made me realise how much I despise washing dishes and the inevitable pile on the side because neither of us seem to be capable of just washing something when we've finished using it.

Regale me with tales of how much you love your dishwasher.

Jealous Envy we can't fit one in.

WelcomeToGreenvale · 05/10/2018 21:10

God no I love my dishwasher. Having grown up without one when I finally rented my own place, which came with a dishwasher, for about six months I steadfastly refused to use it, thinking no need, I can wash up, why do I need this?

Then one day I didn't have time and had some dishwasher tabs from when I moved in so I just bunged it all in and went about my day.

Never looked back Grin and can count the items I've washed manually since then on my fingers! Apparently it's actually more ecofriendly water-wise than the manual wash and rinse!

PeasAreGreat · 05/10/2018 21:13

I grew up in a house that had a dishwasher. I always HATED filling it up and emptying it when washed. It's all I knew...

Now for the past 2 years I'm in a house that has no dishwasher and I would do anything to have that luxury again. The hours I've spent with my hands in dirty water and food while hand washing make me shiver just thinking about.

When the day comes that I'll be reunited with a dishwasher, I promise to never ever complain about unloading clean dry plates, ever again Blush

Justmuddlingalong · 05/10/2018 21:16

I was so excited when I got my 1st dishwasher, I couldn't wait the few days until the plumber could fit it. So, I plumbed it in myself.

pandarific · 05/10/2018 21:23

I love mine SO MUCH, and it's only a slimline cheapie Beko. It's a great little workhorse though.

The day I get a FULL SIZE one with a CUTLERY TRAY up the top, I might actually combust with delight. Grin

I love finding new things that aren't dishes to put through it and come out all sparkly and new - dustpan and brush, anyone? Bathroom bin? Kitchen bin lid? Glass jars for storing spices?

Holidayfromreal · 05/10/2018 21:31

I can't fit a dishwasher and it makes me very sad. I would be super excited too Smile

catlady3 · 05/10/2018 21:32

Totally feel you. We essentially bought a house (rented a small one with a tiny galley kitchen before that) so we could fit a dishwasher.

Here's the story of how I found the perfect dishwasher, and paid just over half price for it. Enjoy.

Several friends had told me that the one to get was a Miele, I googled it and that seemed like legit advice. But Miele make a lot of dishwashers. I did the quiz on their website, the things that were important to me were that it's quiet as the downstairs is open plan, that it had a short cycle for when you're having a party and need to do a load of glasses and such, and that it had that cutlery tray at the top rather than a basket.

Turned out there was only one model that did all three! And it was sold out or unavailable everywhere except in John Lewis. I think it was probably being discontinued.

Anyway, I had a day off because it was my birthday, so went into town to JL. I don't remember now why I couldn't order it online, there was some reason for this (isn't this a great story???). Went in there, looked for it, found the display model, did my measurements and talked to the sales people because I had some questions. Then the shock: They didn't have any left!!! Whaaaaaat.

So I asked about the display model, which had a little dent on the inside. They were a bit reluctant, I don't recall why, I do remember finding it a bit odd at the time. They needed to make some calls to see if they could sell it. Eventually, they decided they could sell it, deliver it and install it. Also said the warranty would be the same (this warranty never materialised btw., but whatever).

And this is how I ended up buying the perfect dishwasher, at 40% off, on my birthday.

It is literally the best thing we have in this house, it's remove one of the biggest sources of conflict in our relationship. I cook dinner, my partner puts everything in the dishwasher, he empties it, I make it dirty again... Perfect harmony.

Celebelly · 05/10/2018 21:38

Our new one has a cutlery drawer! The one in old house was a slimline and pretty old (but still worked) so I'm quite excited about a new one.

I think the last straw has been since I've been pregnant. A couple of times I've tried to wash something up and it's made me gag and almost hurl.

DP had to rip a cupboard unit out (and me being m, I wanted the drawers from the cupboard installed into another cupboard so he had to wrestle with that) and kitchen is currently resembling a building site but it'll be worth it!

There are so many on the market though. I panicked and bought a Bosch because our washing machine is one and I like it. It seems to have good reviews at least!

@catlady3 I wouldn't even have thought to ask about the display model! I'm impressed!

My Beko tried setting itself on fire a few weeks ago. We have a Bosch now that’s meant to dry plastic.

Itsnotmesothere · 05/10/2018 22:10

Jealous! We used to have one. I really miss it. I like doing a wash with the service wash tablets!

ThePinkOcelot · 05/10/2018 22:10

YADNBU to be excited by your dishwasher! I love mine!!

Helpmemyhairisterrible · 05/10/2018 22:14

Just the same as you. Our new house has a beautiful kitchen but nowhere for a dishwasher. We're taking out the under counter freezer to move the washing machine and putting a dishwasher in the space. We'll get a small chest freezer for the shed, as we don't really use it. Dishes and baby bottles make at least an hour a day washing up. I despise it.

donajimena · 05/10/2018 22:14

I have a Bosch slimline thing which has to be around 15 years old. It only works on one cycle which cleans brilliantly. I won't be able to replace it. I give a prayer of thanks when a cycle completes. I love it

Celebelly · 05/10/2018 22:18

@Helpmemyhairisterrible Our freezer is in the garage! We don't use it a great deal so it's no hassle it being out there. Our tumble dryer is in the garage too. We do have a big dining kitchen but I preferred to keep cupboard space as much as possible so was happy to shunt some lesser used appliances out of the way!

3boysandabump · 05/10/2018 22:19

We've recently built a utility so freed up some space in the kitchen. I've been considering getting a dishwasher but wasn't sure if it was worth it. Think I'll go ahead after reading this

MingaTurtle · 05/10/2018 22:30

In our first house I cried at DH until he caved and agreed to get a dishwasher.

Our last dishwasher had blue interior lighting like the lighting in toilets in dodgy areas that discourages drug taking as you can’t see your veins. I’m not sure why they put that in.

Our current dishwasher pops open on the drying cycle. I think that’s genius.

GruffaloStick · 05/10/2018 22:37

I've just inherited a dishwasher when we bought a house. I love love love it and would hate to be without one, I mostly love how the kitchen can look clean and tidy in 5 minutes and all the mess hidden away.

Mine is a Bosch too OP, highly rate it

Benandhollysmum · 05/10/2018 22:41

I don’t see the point in them tbh, still have to rinse and load them then put them away..but that’s cause I’m a weirdo and like washing dishes lol
But I broke out in a smile at your question tho because it’s silly things like white goods whether new fridge or dishwasher that makes us feel a bit happy 😃, so no you ain’t being unreasonable be excited and enjoy your moment of bliss

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/10/2018 22:45

Mine is being an utter arse at the moment , the water goes in but it won't heat the water or the drying wafts of air.

So, I'll allow you to be delighted Grin but I'll just wallow in my self pity till we get it repaired .

MrBeansXmasTurkey · 05/10/2018 22:47

You dont have to rinse nowadays Benandhollysmum just a quick scrape is all you need.

Benandhollysmum · 05/10/2018 22:51

Shhhh don’t type that lol my oh been trying to get me one for years and that’s what I’ve been telling him. If he ever finds out there goes playing with bubbles when washing the dishes 😱😟

TinselAngel · 05/10/2018 22:59

After two terrible dishwasher free years following my departure from the marital home, I crowd funded one for my fortieth birthday. I love it deeply.

SpoonBlender · 05/10/2018 23:34

Oh, no - you don't need to rinse them! Just scrap them off into the (compost) bin, then toss them in.

Any dishwasher that isn't cleaning unless you rinse doesn't count as a dishwasher. Though you may be able to improve it with salt/rinsaid/different dishwasher tabs.

Bosch £500 and whichever type of Finish tabs are on offer at the time of purchase, here.

SpoonBlender · 05/10/2018 23:35

Xpost! Fair enough then :D
