To all those making negative comments about the Thai cave rescue incident, I have massive respect for Elon in that he was prepared to call the guy out. This is an older chap who lives on the beach famous for western men going to find under age Thai brides. I can't believe he would have made this up.

So why did he initially apologise for saying it?

I fancy a cartoon version of Nightwing (Batman's buddy) so I can't judge anyone. Nightwing is a really nice guy though, or he would be if existed as opposed to being a comic/cartoon character.

He did not 'call the guy out' at all, he made a nasty accusation because 'the guy' pointed out his claims that his submersible invention was useful, was going ot be used, that hew as constructive in the rescue etc, were all utter bullshit.

Elon was using the Thai cave situation as a platform to self promote, the reality is, he was no use, he was getting in the fecking way and none of the actual cavers wanted him anywhere near.

'the guy' told him where to stick his pointless submersible, and he didn't like it so lashed out with his false accusation.

He was forced to make an apology because it was a wholly unfounded accusation and 'the guy' and the guys partner were pretty bloody upset about it.

Caves/caving/cave rescue are part of my life and whilst I don't know those involved personally now, I have close friends and family who do, so the above is not idle conjecture!

I think he’s a bit embarrassing - why would you send a car into space?! Just felt like a massive ego trip.

Also the Thai cave incident - he rocked up with a device that wouldn’t even fit in the tiny tunnels with no awareness of the complexities of cave diving, then when called out he called one of the rescuers a paedophile?? Ah embarrassing reaction from a grown man.

Called that cave diver a child rapist and said he moved to Thailand to marry a 12 year old. Vernon Unsworth does indeed have a Thai girlfriend but she is no child bride but a 40 year old woman he has been with for nearly a decade.

He sent a car into space because test launches need test cargo, and it’s more fun to send a car than a giant lump of concrete. Anything that gets people interested in space is a good thing.

As for his ‘submarine’, he didn’t just build some random thing. He was asked to help by the Governor and he built what was asked for. Multiple Thai engineers were asked to work on the same idea, Musk’s engineers were just the one who got it built fast. Maybe it wouldn’t have worked (though some of the kids went through on rigid stretchers wider than the sub dimensions) but he’s not the one who came up with the idea, the rescuers did.
