Ive posted this under another thread but had no responses but really don't know what to do so posting in here and hoping more people can see it and offer advice.

Ive been offered a new job today, and ive been asked to go in tomorrow with references, ive sent my previous employer (manager) a message asking if i can put them down as a reference, they have not yet responded. I left work on good terms, so know she wouldn't give a bad reference. But do i still put her down even though she hasnt gave permission? Also, who can i use as a personal reference? A good friend?

In my experience, they will always expect a reference from your most recent employer, and your former employer should anticipate this (though it may be that the HR department has a policy of only providing confirmation of dates worked, rather than a direct reference from your line manager). For personal references, I've always been asked to provide someone I've known for at least five years (and it doesn't hurt to name someone in a "professional/trust" type job (can't think of the right word right now) -- but e.g. teacher, doctor, police officer, lawyer, civil servant, etc.

Thank you for your reply. My previous job was almost two years ago, so dont think they'd be expecting me to be asking for a reference this far down the line. Im hoping they'll respond before tomorrow. I would feel cheeky just putting them down as a reference when ive asked but they've not responded. I will let new employer know my situation tomorrow. Thanks again.
