Tongue is tong not tung to me! Tortoise is tore-toys! The city I have moved to pronounces things differently to my home town. Eg- Birmingham is Birming um here and come here is come he oh!

Moo-er? Are they a cow? Grin

Regional accents are so interesting.

Tighnabruaich · 05/10/2018 11:31

If you are in the 'tong' camp - do you pronounce it exactly as you would hair tong or sugar tong etc?

Pemba · 05/10/2018 11:54

Yes, like hair tongs. But I sometimes say it the tung way. And tor - toys and tor - tuss are absolutely interchangeable to me. It's not really a word that you use everyday. So what I am trying to say is, does it really matter?

Justadistanthummm · 05/10/2018 12:04

TONG and TORTOYSS. what about Road... Is it Roooaad or Roawd?

Brian9600 · 05/10/2018 12:06

I suspect people who say torr-toyss of also being likely to say tiss-yew (rather than tishoo, like a proper person would say).

I suspect people who say torr-toyss of also being likely to say tiss-yew (rather than tishoo, like a proper person would say). Goady or what

Justadistanthummm · 05/10/2018 12:26

Noooo...I say TORTOYSS and TISHOO!

LRDtheFeministDragon · 05/10/2018 14:22

sleeping - well, I don't really know! We were in the East Midlands. He thought - and they all thought - the way I said 'four' sounded like 'fur'. It doesn't to my ear, and no one else has ever commented on it. But, apparently, there's a very small group of villages that people who are in the know can instantly recognise by the way they say those vowels, so I guess that must be it, in reverse.

I can hear a clear difference between 'four' and 'fur,' but could never hear why my 'four' sounded anything like 'fur,' either when they said it or when I did!

People are odd. Smile

@Brian9600
Torrrr-toyysssss and Tishoo here!
Does anyone other than Hyacinth Bucket say “Tiss-syooo”?!

BumDisease · 05/10/2018 14:44

It's tishyoo. 😜

Oh, and tung. Tongs are things you use to serve salad.

foxtiger · 05/10/2018 15:07

tortus and tung for me.

I used to know someone with the surname Tonge (pronounced tong, not tung) and people always misspelt it as Tongue!
