Do Not Distrub Sign

Grrr, first world problem I know - but need a rant.

Staying in a rather nice hotel (4 star+), geared towards families. Abroad, but language is not a huge concern.

Last week we hung the ‘do not disturb sign on the door’ as we had just got the overactive toddler down for a nap and were starting to snooze ourselves. Queue knock at the door. WTF?

I answer it and it’s room service with an apparent problem with an earlier charge to the room and looking for cash to settle the bill. I politely explain I will sort it with Reception later as I have a toddler sleeping (not particularly well dressed myself, and wasn’t about to go hunting round the room looking for cash when there was a credit card tab open at Reception). He leaves.

Less than ten minutes later phone goes, beside the bed that said toddler is sleeping in. Room Service chasing for the money again. I (not so politely) tell them to go away reiterating the ‘do not disturb’ sign and the previous conversation.

We complained to management that evening, received an apology with fruit sent to the room.

Today toddler back down for a nap, the ‘do not disturb’ sign is back on the door. Took us almost an hour to get him down, I’m drifting off to sleep and the phone goes.

I answer and it’s someone on Reception about lost property we reported missing. I politely explain toddler is sleeping and I will call back at a more suitable time.

Twenty minutes pass, phone goes again . Reception again, they have someone standing outside our room (with the ‘do not disturb’ sign clearly in view) and were phoning so as not to disturb us to let us know he is outside with the lost items.

I lost the plot. AIBU?

i always presumed dnd was for the cleaners

can reception see your door to know you have dnd on the door??

unplug the phone

I always thought it was a “don’t walk right in” sign not a don’t knock and / or phone sign

Unplug the phone

@Araiwa - no Reception can’t see the sign, which is why I was okay with first phone call today. But after explaining the situation, I don’t expect a second call.

@ohluckyme- I think that will be the strategy going forward!
