To think that Asda veg doesn't last as long as others?

I never shop at Asda because it's not actually that convenient - however every so often I pass one or DH does and we end up buying things. Every single time, no matter what the dates on the products, fruit and veg just doesn't seem to last as long as it does from Sainsbury's or Lidl where I usually shop (usually Lidl but a small Sainsbury's is on my walk home from work so I top up there).

For example, DH popped into an Asda on his way home 3 days ago and bought some
Broccoli with today's date as it's best before. I've just taken it out of the fridge to have a look and it's all Soggy etc. On the other hand, every pack of broccoli I buy at Lidl tends to last at least 2-3 days past the date printed on it.

Cucumbers are a previous example of something that just seems to last longer when it's from Lidl or Sainsbury's.

DH thinks I'm talking rubbish. Am I just mad or is this actually a thing?

I don’t shop in sainsburies or lidl. But have found asda last longer than Morrison’s or Tesco generally. Aldi is hit and miss

Jakethekid · 29/09/2018 09:15

No I agree. Also I've often seen fruit and veg in my local asda that is actually already mouldy and is still on the shelves. I have often wondered why.

Heartbrokengirl14 · 29/09/2018 09:16

Actually we have found this! We actually stopped shopping there. We recently started again but we have the same problem. Sometimes it is hit or miss but generally things just start to spoil!

HalfGreekBitch · 29/09/2018 09:16

I rarely shop at ASDA as other supermarkets nearer, but my brother makes exactly same complaint op. His ASDA is Ealing.

Singlebutmarried · 29/09/2018 09:19

I’ve been bit by veg from our local market lately. Seems to last better than the supermarket stuff.

I also put newspaper/kitchen towel in the bottom of the veg drawers so this may also make a difference.

duchessofsussedsex · 29/09/2018 09:22

Singlebutmarried I wish there was a market open when I'm not at work round here!

I put our broccoli in water, it lasts for ages.
Normally find Aldi fruit and veg doesn't last esp soft fruit

Eeeeek2 · 29/09/2018 09:36

Yep I find this and it can be hit and miss with Lidl too, I know buy fruit and veg from the co-op when I pop in for milk and bread.

WallabyWay · 29/09/2018 09:36

I haven't noticed this. I have a fridge full of Asda veg and it's perfectly fine, bought 5 days ago. i shop at almost all of the major supermarkets and Ive never noticed a difference. Although when I buy peppers from Lidl they don't seem to last as long a peppers from elsewhere.

PurpleDaisies · 29/09/2018 09:38

I mostly shop at Asda. No problems for me.

RandomlyChosenName · 29/09/2018 09:39

Yes, I agree that Asda fruit and veg doesn't last as long! Worst "fresh" food ever.

Slatternsdelight · 29/09/2018 09:44

I find this with all their fresh food tbh-meat and milk in particular

They're good for dried and household goods but I never buy fresh stuff there

Groovee · 29/09/2018 09:53

Our Asda is fine!

Mumof1DS · 29/09/2018 10:01

Regular Asda fruit and vegetables are usually fine and last easily for our week. Those Asda wonky veg boxes on the other hand... Complete con as my last was 90% rotten. It's brilliant that they're selling veg that doesn't meet whatever "criteria" they use, but using it to shift rotten veg is not cool. It's not as though you can even open the box to check as you can with eggs, because they seal it with the price label!

ToadOfSadness · 29/09/2018 10:08

Asda is fine where we are, however Lidl is not great, goes off quickly.

tissuesosoft · 29/09/2018 10:10

I’ve always found ASDA fruit and veg lasts past the best by date. Aldi is the worst where I am

MrsJayy · 29/09/2018 10:11

We have just switched from Tesco to Asda for various reasons and the fruit and veg last days longer than tesco so it is maybe just your luck.

lidoshuffle · 29/09/2018 10:15

Our farmers' market broccoli lasts over a fortnight, Lidl's goes yellow in a couple of days (I still love Lidl though!).

rebelworld · 29/09/2018 10:18

Assam here is absolutely fine, but a Tesco certainly has problems with its supply chain. In store, the fruit only ever has a Best Before date of the very next day. Awful.

rebelworld · 29/09/2018 10:18

Assam = Asda

duchessofsussedsex · 29/09/2018 14:34

Sounds like it's not everywhere but it's certainly not just me!

MaMisled · 29/09/2018 14:38

Definitely agree about Asda veg. I now....ridiculously. ....buy my shopping across Sainsburys (best fruit and veg, fresh meats, personal stuff)), Iceland (frozen fish and meat), Aldi (store cupboard basics) and Asda (pet food, toiletries, household).

TheRoadLessRocky · 29/09/2018 15:27

I find Morrisons to be worse. Aldi is variable and Asda is usually reliable. Maybe it depends on local suppliers?

Artofpretending · 29/09/2018 15:31

I find Morrison’s worst too and also they don’t have the greatest selection.

RavenLG · 29/09/2018 15:40

Asda and Tesco are awful. Morrison’s wonky veg are brilliant. Aldi is hit and miss. Local farm shop is the best but we can only get to it on a weekend
