Lol,Lol!

@keepitw0nky - that's interesting! Will have to have a listen.

SpiritLeveller · 04/10/2018 13:44

Also, check out a guy called Nik Speller on twitter who raises some really fascinating points on influencer marketing and has written some brilliant articles. Today he has done an article on influencer fraud which is thought provoking (he’s talking paid for follows and likes as well as transparency). I love this quote from his article:

“Influencer marketing has so much to offer all of these people (consumers, brands, and influencers); but, in reality, it’s an absolute Wild West of a minefield, of smoke, mirrors, and snake oil pushers, where no-one really seems to know what’s real, fake, or a measure of the degrees in-between.”

Keepitw0nky · 04/10/2018 13:47

@mightymousie @sidalee7 yes Grin that’s how I found the whole interview, much more human than his social media character.

MrBull · 04/10/2018 14:14

Will have a read of that. Sounds interesting. Wild West sounds about right!

The latest FOD ad is so weird. Wtf does his employer think of him tacking on a paid advert for an airport lounge onto a work trip?! Especially as he travelled business anyway so would have had access to the airline lounge. Bet he went into the #ad lounge, posed for his beer selfie & then high tailed it to the “proper” one. Cha-ching.

SpiritLeveller · 04/10/2018 15:00

I can't get too excited about the ad for the lounge (other than hashtag isn't very prominent...needs to be at the top of the post FOD, the top). I think his employers sound pretty flexible and you aren't clocked in when you are travelling so unless you are bringing your employer into disrepute or causing a conflict with your work I am sure they don't have a problem with it. Gurning into a phone with a single can of beer wouldn't cause any employer a sleepless night I shouldn't think.

Airport lounges are ace, whether part of a loyalty club or the ones you can pay to go into. Worth every penny if you are travelling with children and need to check in early.

The only thing that bugs me about a post like that is the "tell me about your experience with an airport/washing machine/sandwich filler" that they do to create engagement. Like they give a shit. Did he reply to any of the tips?

ProfessionalCommuter · 04/10/2018 15:21

I guess I meant his line manager. There’s a girl at our work with a bit of a following (7,000+). I won’t say what area exactly she focuses on, but it necessitates taking a lot of selfies in her underwear. Alongside this, she takes some (fully clothed) selfies in the office loos. She makes it clear on her page she’s got a day job. In terms of what work think? Well, no one really says anything about it to her face. The senior partners are all male so wouldn’t dare. The rest of us might make oblique references to her. Behind her back? Everyone thinks it’s incredibly damaging to her career. And she’s mocked. “Oh Sonia’s got her arse out again screenshot” I can only imagine FOD’s colleagues (and to that end, parents at instaparents kids’ school gates) do and think the same.

SpiritLeveller · 04/10/2018 15:25

He seems to keep his work very separate and under the radar from his online persona which I think is a very good idea (and no doubt a condition of him having the second job).

But yeah, I am sure there is a bit of eye rolling by the water cooler from some colleagues. I would hope he never gets his kit off for a selfie in the work loos as well Grin

Scientistic · 04/10/2018 18:06

I would feel put off by him consulting for my company when he generally acts like he is incompetent in life. You cant keep work and social media entirely separate when you put it out there for all to see.

I appreciate that doesnt sound too kind but it must surely factor into his life in a big way and comapnies he works with could potentially know his online persona.

Doesn't he just act the goat a bit!? 'Incompetent in life' is a tad harsh!

*Great article in Cosmo on the new guidelines.

Surely some of them must read it??

This needs to be passed on to Mrs Hinch, who has become one of the worst offenders of all. Constant undeclared affiliate links and freebies she's been sent. Also Clearly working for minky now but hasn't declared that anywhere either. I've only ever seen #af on one of her posts, and it was in white at the top left corner behind the writing.

AnonaMouse1 · 04/10/2018 21:48

She's become insta famous so quick, do you think she understands the need to declare?

SpiritLeveller · 04/10/2018 21:53

There was a separate Mrs Hinch thread a while ago which she popped up on. The issue of affiliate links was brought up then and someone who was staunchly defending her (and seemed to be connected to her in some way, I’m not clear how) said they were going to go away and discuss affiliate link disclosure with their PR company (lolz). They seemed to think Amazon affiliate links were somehow exempt from the rules Hmm There’s not really any excuse for this level of ineptitude now that the guide is out there is there?

oksanas · 04/10/2018 22:12

@SpiritLeveller I remember that post Grin

CaptainCorrigan · 04/10/2018 22:25

She's become insta famous so quick, do you think she understands the need to declare?

Yes, as she's gone to the effort of marking one post as #af and another post as #ad so she must be aware but somehow thinks the rules don't apply to her. Yes her followers swooped in on the thread 'oh she's not making much anyway' I don't really care how much money she makes or how much free stuff she gets but I think she should be honest about it.

MrBull · 05/10/2018 08:10

#af is shady enough anyway. How many people actually know that means affiliate link - and the poster makes money from click throughs/onward purchases? It changes the whole nature in which they share the link from "I simply just love this product and use it" (good) to "I'll make money out of you buying this" (advertising). I've seen a few explain it from time to time (The Frugality I think, if not her, definitely one of the fashion ones).

The new guide is pretty clear on affiliate links.

OP posts:
SpiritLeveller · 05/10/2018 08:21

Frugality only discloses if it’s a paid (cash) ad. She is awful with gifts and freebies. As are a lot of fashion bloggers, to be fair.

Agree though, #af is meaningless. I don’t mind the principle of affiliate links - it’s like a performance based reward for bloggers driving traffic to a brand. I don’t like the way the links work though and how they linger on your device long after any influence has evaporated and you are shopping off your own back. For that reason I won’t click on them. If they changed the way they worked I would click on them gladly to support bloggers I like.

pocketdoor · 05/10/2018 09:32

Oh that's weird I think the frugality is pretty upfront!

She always says when it's an affiliated link, and actually spells it out rather than using #af. She also does use #gifted a lot, and my god she gets gifted LOADS.

SpiritLeveller · 05/10/2018 09:47

I’m looking at her captions and can’t see any gifts disclosed on recent ones and she features a lot of the same brands that bloggers that do declare gifts are declaring. Where have you seen her disclose gifts because we may be looking at different things by the sounds of it?

SpiritLeveller · 05/10/2018 09:48

Tagging the brand isn’t disclosure (which is what she does do a lot of)

MrBull · 05/10/2018 10:03

I've found her generally quite good too. Although now I'm questioning if I'm getting her confused with someone else!
I'm sure it was her who explained she'd make money out of the links that she was about to share.

OP posts:
SpiritLeveller · 05/10/2018 10:13

She may be good at her affiliate links (some of them had cottoned on to the fact that these were in the ASA rules) but I don’t think she is good on gifting and freebies - which was previously the woolly area but now made clear under the new guidance.

SpiritLeveller · 05/10/2018 10:14

She’s far from the only one though.
