I may have even used one myself even though it's AWFUL! Can't we just say 'husband' 'partner' etc or is it a 'mumsnet identity thing'?

Yes! I hate it, too. Even more so when people create their own abbreviations and I have no clue what the fk they’re talking about.

I like DH, darling husband or dastardly husband depending on how I feel... Oh but Stupid Bastard ex husband is my fave (and yes I eventually realised its actually soon to be) Grin

I manage to bypass the 'dear' in my head, makes it bearable.

I get a bit ragey when people use the wrong abbreviations (e.g. DS for sister) because it ends up making no sense. I just use the full words and nobody seems to mind.

Oh and I love DDog, because dogs are. Am willing to concede husbands and children are generally dreadful so don't need a dear/darling, but clearly dogs are always dear.... Except mine who snatched the builders sandwich out of his hand yesterday. Mortifying dog!

FU.

I use MN on my phone. It is quicker to type Sil than sister-in-law, DH instead of husband..

Don't like it? Then FOTTOSOFAWYGTFOSM WinkGrin

I like them, it's just efficient, innit. Can be confusing for a newbie, though - I thought STBXH meant 'shoot the bastard ex husband' so used it to refer to my very very ex (10+ years!) H for a while till I worked it out.

Had to google TL:DR too

TBH I feel ashamed when I read 'd' in these acronyms. Just yesterday I saw ddog and thought how stupid to stop the autocorrect to type something twee.

Kind of a lighthearted thread so I wouldn't take it too seriously

I could suggest you take your own advice. Hmm

There's always one who chooses to take offence and start with the patronising sarky comments confused. [Yawn]

Well, I don't use them or much like them, bu the 'I hate Mn acronyms' comes up about once a fortnight from some new member dazzled by their own originality, so yes, it is a bit yawn-inducing.

DF really annoys me when the post doesn't make it clear whether they're referring to their dear friend, father or fiance. I don't mind DH, DS, DD etc. And thank God we use DSS/DSD/DSC for step children instead of the awful Skids that I see refreenced on other forums.

Read The Fucking Thread

I know what software developers mean when they roll their eyes and wish users would RTFM (manual, rather than thread ... I think this may be where the RTFT originated from).

Along with snafu and fubar , which lead to many coding examples featuring variables food and bar, long before WWW was a thing.

Yes, you're right about software developers and manuals Error. Pretty certain RTFT means read the fucking thread. Read the full thread doesn't even make sense, who talks about reading the 'full' anything.

Read the whole thread would make more sense if that were the case.

  • Sorry that should be Errol not Error.

So agree with lots of these comments! AF for period makes me want to puke and I also hate it when on the conception boards people go 'I had a bit of spotting last night (sorry TMI)' AAAAAAAAAGH we're literally discussing the nitty gritty of baby making, so sperm and lube and cervical mucus and blood are par for the course! If we're all grown up enough to be making babies we're grown up enough not to have to apologise every time we mention bodily fluid or a sexual act!!

I always read 'STBXH' as 'shoot the bastard ex husband'. Literally zero idea where that came from, but I can't seem to re-condition my brain to read it differently!

Generally I don't mind them, but I do find DDog/DCat a bit pointless.

Occasionally though where there is a post where there's loads of different meanings for the abbreviation (DP-partner, parents. DS-son, sister) and so forth. For example, about family drama...and it's something like

'Me and DH are hosting a get together. We want MIL, FIL, DM, DS to come, but not DF as his DF and DS and DSD are not invited. DAunt has said she wants DN and DN to come but not her DF or DB. DFILs DS is a obnoxious idiot so will get nuts if her DC or DP are not coming. DNDN overheard our conversation and has hinted her DS, DS, DD, DSD4, DSS5 come as well but my DN doesn't get along with her DSD but does with her DSS. Also my STBXH might pop along with DP - the DDog, DCat and DHamster.
We also need to contact our GP tomorrow about another matter. AIBU?

It takes about a day to work out who is who Grin
