Ocado siding with misogynists and agreeing that the word "woman" and its dictionary definition is hate speech

Mumsnetters in their droves are abandoning Ocado after they sided with advertising company, Primesight, for removing Standing for Women's billboard in Liverpool. The billboard was a very simple dictionary definition of the word "woman." This has been declared homophobic and hate speech by Dr. Harrop who demanded the billboard be removed.
Since when did the very word, "woman" equal transphobic hate speech?
Posie Parker, the woman behind Standing for Women, was on Sky News this afternoon with Dr. Harrop defending the rights of women and the right to call ourselves women.
Shares in Ocado have gone down today and the company amidst a torrent of cancellations have said they will issue a statement today. So far they haven't done so but all their tweets saying Primesight reflected their company values have been deleted along with the many comments that followed.
Is it unreasonable to boycott Ocado for publicly showing themselves to be against women, who after all are their target consumer group? Scores of posters on the feminist boards don't think so but I'd love to hear the opinions of those outside of the feminist boards.

No problem Missus. Agreed!

RettyPriddle · 26/09/2018 23:22

I’ve e mailed Ocado and cancelled my smart pass. Aldi has opened near us, anyway, so I’ll save some cash, too.

cardibach · 26/09/2018 23:24

StroppyWoman I want to have your post as a poster. Perfectly expressed.

BarbarianMum · 26/09/2018 23:25

But yes, the idea of women defending themselves is offensive to some men.

Babdoc · 26/09/2018 23:25

I’m beyond delighted that at last the shit has hit the fan with this Orwellian nonsense. Let’s hope Ocado’s share price falls through the floor, because money is the only language they understand.
They don’t give a shit about women’s rights or safety.
Let’s teach them a lesson that offending their main customer base (women), purely to try and look cool and virtue signal to please an aggressive minority of TRAs, is commercial suicide.

Molokonono · 26/09/2018 23:27

In your own time love.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 26/09/2018 23:49

stroppywoman yes exactly.

We don't realise how defined by men we are really. It's all on their terms.

Manderleyagain · 26/09/2018 23:52

I think Tilly is right to a degree. I expect the hope behind the billboard was that it would provoke someone to try and get it taken down - causing press coverage and making the the point that the normal use of the word woman is now verboten. The doctor stepped into the trap.

drum123 · 26/09/2018 23:53

I've emailed them and I'm not a customer - never likely to be one now!

ShovingLeopard · 26/09/2018 23:54

Tilly if people take offence at something, that does not mean that it was intended to cause offence. That billboard was to defend women's rights, not to offend men or trans women, though that may well be a side effect. It was also to get the message out to the general public about the attempt to trample on the rights of women, and make them less safe.

I am not an activist either, I am just an ordinary working mother, but I'll be fucked if I'll stand by and allow women's precious rights to be taken away just so that a few noisy and aggressive men and trans woman aren't offended.

And you know what? Being offended really isn't something that must be shied away from at all costs. Any mature adult should be able to take being offended, at times, on the chin, without a full-on collapse of ego, or attempts to deprive others of their rights in case - heaven forfend! - one should ever be confronted with being offended ever again.

Some things are just way, way more important than any notions of offence. This is one of them.

UpstartCrow · 26/09/2018 23:56

There isn't anything offensive about the definition of the word 'woman'.

Women are being pushed out of awards, grants, and all women shortlists. the word 'woman' is being removed from adverts and campaigns aimed at women.
That should concern you.

Prestonsflowers · 27/09/2018 00:00

@ShovingLeopard
Brilliant post, you’ve expressed how I feel
Thank you

ShovingLeopard · 27/09/2018 00:02

Also, Tilly, has it occurred to you that worrying about offending is something girls and women are typically conditioned to strive for? That we are good little girls when we are meek, don't push ourselves forward, and make sure that we never upset anyone?

Are the TRAs worrying about offending anybody? Are they being apologetic or diffident about pushing their agenda?

Dottierichardson · 27/09/2018 00:05

You are definitely not being unreasonable.

manicinsomniac · 27/09/2018 00:07

It's not unreasonable to boycott anything for any reason you feel strongly enough about.

Personally, I find Ocado far too convenient and good value/quality to boycott them. I feel like I'd make my own life harder and not achieve anything useful in return.

But I do agree they've behaved badly.

ShovingLeopard · 27/09/2018 00:12

Thanks Prestons

MsBekaa · 27/09/2018 04:46

Is there a hack for easily transferring an Ocado favourites list to a new supplier (maybe something like mysupermarket)?

GnusSitOnCanoes · 27/09/2018 06:00

Posie Parker was cracking: delighted to see that Harrop exposed for the misogynist he is. If I used Occado, I certainly wouldn't be after this.

Molokonono · 27/09/2018 06:48

Adult human females not using the term woman because they don't want to offend men, adult human males.

People who think that using the correct terminology is hateful, really need to have a word with themselves.

And catch on.

You are effectively erasing the ability of over half the world to even describe themselves.

Helmetbymidnight · 27/09/2018 06:56

I wish I used Ocado then I could stop using them.

The billboard is funny. There are hundreds of billboards of women’s bodies, objectifying us, no one cares.
When women use factual words on a billboard, that is suddenly out of order.

It’s misogyny and it’s indefensible.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 27/09/2018 07:31

Women : adult human female.

Is:
Offensive
Aggressive
Hate speech

Then what is a women?
What are we?
Do we wait for men to redefine us?

Fuck that shit.

Women are being prevented from stating the dictionary agreed definition of women.

Is this the twilight zone?
Is this 1984?

Whatever it is it's scary shit. It's not a small thing it is a huge central vital thing. And we need to fight it on all fronts.
Loudly, assertively persisting.
Like Posie.

Ocado l hope you seriously regret the day you disrespected all the women who used to shop with you, all the women who might of shopped with you, and all our adult human female sisters we told about this.

scaryteacher · 27/09/2018 07:32

I want one of those T shirts Posie has on. My (d) s tried to tell me yesterday that I was 'cis', and that trans women's rights trumped mine. He then sneered at me, pointed his finger in my face and asked me to clarify what made being a woman specific to natal females. I pointed out that oppression by the patriarchy was a large part of it and QED as he was keen to erode my rights. I want that T shirt to point out what women are, or a large poster that he can't miss.

StealthNinjaMum · 27/09/2018 08:11

Yanbu. I emailed Ocado yesterday - 3 depts.

They can see I've been with them over ten years.

As they didn't reply I did my first ever Sainsbury's order. They're not going to reply so unless they put out a statement with a sincere apology for their fuckup they've lost my custom.

FloraFox · 27/09/2018 08:36

I wonder if Ocado’s comms team have watched the Sky interview. Harrop is almost swivel eyed in it. It’s not such a good idea to alienate your base to appease the likes of him.

I’ve been shopping with Ocado from the beginning but I can get pretty much anything delivered to where I live including M&S (trial zone) so it’s going to be very easy to switch away from Ocado. What a pointless piece of virtue signalling.

collieflowers · 27/09/2018 09:09

When the TRAs and all the brainwashed younger trans-friendly students get their way and we all live in a lovely, rainbow-coloured, unicorn-friendly, cloud-cuckoo-land, choosing our genders and pronouns etc and constantly waiting to be offended, aren't we going to eventually need words for 'people with ovaries etc' and 'people with sperm'? So what's wrong with 'woman' and 'man'?
Or is it going to be 'breeders' and 'real people (with penises)'?
