To think babies are learning to walk earlier than a few years ago?

I go to a baby group and out of 6 mums I know (babies age 9-10 months) 5 of them are walking!

DD was the first one walking out of her group 5 years ago and she started at 11.5 months.

Spoke to a mum at soft play today with kids the same age and weirdly she randomly said the same thing, that babies she knows seem to be walking by 10 months - way earlier now than when her oldest was young.

Just curious is this true for mumsnet? Or just a weird coincidence out of my friends. Walking at 9-10 months seemed unheard of when my eldest was born!

Both my two walked at 15 months.

One is 14 and one is 13.

The 14 year old crawled at 8.5 months, cruised round at 9.5 months and then didn’t walk until 15 months

The 13 year old didn’t move until 10.5 months and did a weird sort of bottom shuffle. She stood on her own about 14 months and then walked at 15 months.

So for me 15 months is when babies learn to walk

Bugjune · 26/09/2018 20:27

Another one walking at 8 months, 43 years ago. I didn't do much in the way of crawling though, by all accounts.

Childrenofthesun · 26/09/2018 20:28

Both my DC walked at 12 months.
I didn't walk until 20 months Grin. I had one of those walkers that you stand in and push around and became completely reliant on that. I don't think they are so prevalent now.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 26/09/2018 20:28

I have 5dc. 1 (dc3) walked at 9ish months, 2 (dc1 & 4) at about 15 months, 1 (dc2) at 21 months (although he was delayed with all of his fine & gross motor skills & we had weekly physio from about 6/8 weeks old) & 1 (dc5) who is very very close to taking his first steps at 13.5 months, he's a pro at going both up & down stairs though.

Longdistance · 26/09/2018 20:30

I would disagree. My dB was walking unaided at 9 mo, me 10mo. This is in the 70’s.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 26/09/2018 20:30

I walked at 9/10 months, and was speaking in proper sentences at 12 months....I'm autistic

cutie101 · 26/09/2018 20:31

Dd1 walked at 16 months. Dd2 walked at almost 22 months (!). Dd2 didn't crawl but she bum shuffled so had no need to walk as could get everything she wanted and still had her hands free to carry stuff. Within a week of starting to walk she walked the best part of a mile with me pushing an empty buggy!

ShadyLady53 · 26/09/2018 20:32

I’m 34 and walked for the first time at 10 months. Niece and nephew are teenagers now and were 14/15 months.

DailyMailFail101 · 26/09/2018 20:32

Interesting, I would say it’s the complete opposite babies walking later and later....

LaurieMarlow · 26/09/2018 20:33

There's just a wide variety of normal.

I walked just shy of 9 months (back in the early 80s). I was tiny for my age, so interesting that it's often the small ones that do it early.

agnurse · 26/09/2018 20:34

There's actually a broad range of "normal" when it comes to walking. The text I use for my nursing students says 12-22 months is the normal age for walking.

southnownorth · 26/09/2018 20:35

My eldest walked at 10 months, she is almost 17. Her younger sister didn't walk until 18 months.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 26/09/2018 20:41

I was an earlyish walker, around 9 months. DD1 walked at 7 (almost 8) months. My nephew is a confident walker at 7 months.

I think people are ridiculously urgent about it. I never encouraged them to walk. Why would you?

I didn't. I didn't want her to walk early at all - the complete opposite really. My nephew wasn't encouraged to do so either - they really did sort it out for themselves Grin

wonkylegs · 26/09/2018 20:43

My 10yo walked at 10mths
My 2.5yo walked at 18mths

So in my anecdotal experience nope

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 26/09/2018 20:43

I was almost 9lbs too

borntobequiet · 26/09/2018 20:43

I like this. Scroll down the left hand side of the page and it suggests putting a 5 month old child in a “go cart” baby walker. (1777)

HunterHearstHelmsley · 26/09/2018 20:45

I was walking at 9 months and could hold a full conversation at 10 months! Born mid 80s. It depends on the child. I was a 9lber too

Zoosie · 26/09/2018 20:45

Both my dc, aged 3 and 5 didn’t walk until 22 months.

V late judging by this thread.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 26/09/2018 20:46

My 15 month old nephew walked at 10 months.

Amanduh · 26/09/2018 20:47

Ds walked at 9 months last year. I did the same in 1986!

Kitkatmonster · 26/09/2018 20:48

I’ve had one at 16m, one at 12m and one at 9m.

Everyoneiswingingit · 26/09/2018 20:52

Some people do brag as though early walking is a sign of intelligence.

MyHusbandSaysIHave1000MNNames · 26/09/2018 20:52

My MIL said all 3 of hers were walking by 9 months, they're all adults now. Meanwhile our 5 month old seems miles away from even crawling. 🤷‍♀️

AnotherPidgey · 26/09/2018 20:53

Mine were 16m and 14m. They were too busy crawling to want to slow to a walk Grin

DS1 commando crawled at 8m and crawled properly at 9m, stood at 10m. Cruised at 12m. Could climb. Had an amazing reverse crawl to get down steps. No interest in walking solo until he randomly took 16 steps across the room very steadily.

DS2 began wriggling off at 6m before sitting, then turned into a commando crawl. He took his first steps to hurl himself into a swimming pool with glee!

missymayhemsmum · 26/09/2018 20:53

Interesting, I suppose the baby walker kept the baby out of the mud/ rushes/whatever on the floor.

I was told once that the crawling stage is important for co-ordiantion later and that children who go straight to walking tend to have development issues around anything that means right leg, left arm, left leg right arm working alternately. No idea how true that is.
