To think babies are learning to walk earlier than a few years ago?

I go to a baby group and out of 6 mums I know (babies age 9-10 months) 5 of them are walking!

DD was the first one walking out of her group 5 years ago and she started at 11.5 months.

Spoke to a mum at soft play today with kids the same age and weirdly she randomly said the same thing, that babies she knows seem to be walking by 10 months - way earlier now than when her oldest was young.

Just curious is this true for mumsnet? Or just a weird coincidence out of my friends. Walking at 9-10 months seemed unheard of when my eldest was born!

My 28 year old walked at 9 months. She was the only one of her group that was so early though.

I have a 18 month old who didn't walk till she was 15 months, it was slower than all the other children I knew of the same age but most of those were around 12 months I think. It's all swings and roundabouts though really.

My 99th centile DD2 walked at 12 months so I don’t think her size hindered her particularly.

My eldest (21) walked at 7 months
14yo at 15 months +

I was gobsmacked when eldest stood at 6 months and started toddling soon after, she looked way too top heavy Grin

Don't think so...

Mine started rolling at 5 months, crawling at 7 months, cruising by 9 months, by 10 months walking confidently.

She is the youngest out of my 2 mum groups and was the first to walk....

They say babies either develop physically or mentally first.... Mine is certainly physical. Her best friend is still crawling (2 months older) but can say lots of words

DC1 - 11mo
DC2 - 14mo
DC3 - 12mo
DC4 - 17mo

They all started crawling at roughly the same age (5-6mo) and were pulling themselves up to stand by 7-8mo but all took their first steps at different ages. I think it's totally random and depends on the baby.

Nah, rubbish. DS was walking at ten months. He's 24 now. That's years not months!

My friends daughter was 16mths. I’ve seen none walking at 9/10 mths at the playgroup I help to run.

My son was a year and a week and went straight to a run, but was talking in full sentences by that point.

my first in the early 90s - walked at a few days past 8mo
second child - 12 mo
third child - 14mo

Nope, my Dad (who died last year at age 79) started walking at 8 months according to my Nana, I started walking at 8 months according to my Mum and my eldest started walking at 8 months too!

My Mum had a theory that first babies are less likely to crawl. She said that I just sat and then I walked fairly early, whereas my younger brother crawled because he was trying to follow me and then he was later walking. I'm not sure whether there's any merit in it really.

I think people are ridiculously urgent about it. I never encouraged them to walk. Why would you? They all learn eventually and in the meantime they stay in one place because I never encouraged them to crawl either

My oldest could walk at 8.5 months but walked from a bed to radiator (couple of steps) at 4/5 months. He also rolled around at 6 weeks but never crawled.

I was walking at 7months (I'm 34) my husband at 9months (same age).

I think it just depends on the kid.

My DS was first to crawl (at 5 months odd) out of my groups but then didn’t walk until 18 months. He was so fast at crawling though! He did a sort of commando crawl dragging his wee legs behind him, it was a bit disturbing.

I’ve found the opposite really. My ds is 16 months and he only took his first steps a week ago. Among his peers this doesn’t seem particularly late but all our older generation family have this mad obsession with getting him to walk and act as if there was something wrong with him for not being able to walk

I walked at 10 months old ,1989.

My ds1 walked at 14months.

my Ds 2 walked at 11 months everyones different.

My first walked day of 1st birthday, she was a crawler.
2nd never crawled and didn't walk until 15 months
3rd is a crawler and not yet walking, will be one in few weeks

2 & 3 were/are bigger babies than 1st.

Mine hated being put on his tummy (colic, I think - it hurt him, I suspect), crawled late (11 months), walked late (17 months). 10 years later made it to the final of the county schools cross-country championship.

So long as there's no developmental issues with gross motor skills, the point during the (very wide) range of normal ages at which a child walks makes... exactly no difference in the long run.

I was a really heavy baby and walked the day I was 9 months and that is not today or yesterday. Both dd's were walking at 9 months. A lot of my family walked early. Going by dh's laid back nature I'd say he was about ten before he walked! Must ask mil.

DD who walked at 16mths was a bum shuffler using one hand so no need to walk to move and carry things!
