MIL has stolen my shoes!

This is not a joke...!

Historically I've had a very difficult relationship with Satan my MIL. DH pops his head in once a week on his way home from work but we otherwise have little to do with the witch. We get on OK when we do see her.

Last week I had to work away and she did massively help us out by popping in and checking on the puppy.... and since then I cannot find my very, very naice pair of wellies that my lovely DM treated me to.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, DH went in to say hi yesterday eve and my wellies were there, neat by my backdoor. He immediately said "are they showjumpers wellies?", she laughed and said "no, of course they're not." DH then said "oh showjumper has lost hers, exactly the same."
She then laughed and commented how absentminded I am!!

(I am but that's not the point!)

With risk of sounding awful, I do not think she would be familiar with the brand and even if she was, she would have the money to spend £300+ on a pair of wellies.

WWYD? All suggestions appreciated Grin

I don't think you should ask your MiL to do you favours eg your puppy if you are also going to call her a witch and Satan. It is hypocritical and entitled.

She didn’t, her mil asked her dh who presumably agreed.

If anyone touched my Le Chameau, they’d lose their fingers!

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 26/09/2018 18:33

I never knew you could get wellies that cost £300!

I'd buy a cheap pair that look the same in the same colour and swap them.

Then show her your new expensive wellies boots you bought to replace the ones you lost. With your name in them.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 26/09/2018 18:50

I've looked at the link to the site solazy.

Believe me - nothing cheap would pass for a pair of these even at midnight in an unlit room!

They are the Maserati of wellies.

Fluffyears · 26/09/2018 19:00

I’d march round and demand them back!

ContessasGulagSpaDay · 26/09/2018 19:08

I'm just going to leave this here....

"The Sam Vimes "Boots" Theory of Economic Injustice runs thus:

At the time of Men at Arms, Samuel Vimes earned thirty-eight dollars a month as a Captain of the Watch, plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots, the sort that would last years and years, cost fifty dollars. This was beyond his pocket and the most he could hope for was an affordable pair of boots costing ten dollars, which might with luck last a year or so before he would need to resort to makeshift cardboard insoles so as to prolong the moment of shelling out another ten dollars.

Therefore over a period of ten years, he might have paid out a hundred dollars on boots, twice as much as the man who could afford fifty dollars up front ten years before. And he would still have wet feet."

PortiaCastis · 26/09/2018 19:08

Just go and get them back and don't ask her to puppy sit

CalamityJane10 · 26/09/2018 19:13

Visit with puppy wearing a pair of old shoes. Take them off at the door. Casually put your own boots on when you leave.

If questioned: “No they’re definitely mine” [tinkly laugh as you skip out of the door]

CrabbityRabbit · 26/09/2018 19:18

Bizarre.

FuzzyCustard · 26/09/2018 19:30

I have a pair of Le Chams that cost £56 in the sale.

LightDrizzle · 26/09/2018 19:32

Get your wellies back before she bins them. Then make sure you are wearing them next time you see her.

PaddingtonBearHardStare · 26/09/2018 19:33

2. Yes, I can afford a dog sitter, dog sitter came in twice that day

Are you absolutely 100% sure it was MIL and not dog sitter?!

MrsJane · 26/09/2018 19:36

Love the invisible security ink idea! Definitely get DH to do that and then go round to check!

Strawberry2017 · 26/09/2018 19:36

Hope you get your Wellies back soon! X

Gemini69 · 26/09/2018 19:45

did you get those gorgeous wellies back yet !?

Aprilshowersnowastorm · 26/09/2018 19:47

Can you ask hq to change your post title to Wellygate?

acatcalledjohn · 26/09/2018 21:02

But you gave an example of her helping you out and still called her a witch and satan in the same paragraph.

Having a £300 pair of wellies stolen has meant that the OP is about £270 out of pocket as she could have spent £30 on a trustworthy dog sitter.

Like fuck is that helpful.

But of course calling a thief words like with and Satan is of course worse than the theft. The OP should be grateful that her wellies were so helpfully stolen.

Hmm
Celestia26 · 26/09/2018 21:08

I'm more shocked that anyone would spend £300 on a pair of wellies tbh! Shock

WhateverHappenedToTheHeatwave · 26/09/2018 21:15

Get your husband to take them back then deny it!

EggysMom · 26/09/2018 21:28

Get DH to go over with a pair of yellow Decathlon wellies pre-marked with her initials. He swaps them for your expensive pair, hides your pair in the car, if he gets time marks them with your initials.

When MIL expresses surprise at the yellow wellies, he should deny any knowledge of them being different and claim the yellow pair are the same pair that he saw there last week ....

HellaFresh · 26/09/2018 21:48

Who steals wellies ? OMG this is insane.
Please just take them back

Hmmalittlefishy · 26/09/2018 22:05

Once I got over the price of the wellies (which is op and her dms choice) I'm more shocked at mumsnetters suggestions to 'write your name/initials on them in magic marker/sharpie' they are £300! Surely you must keep them in a dust bag on a gold shelf somewhere not go mad with a marker!

VelociraptorRex · 26/09/2018 22:40

I've got a pair of Le Chams, and they do have their own bag to live in Blush they are lovely though, and I'd go flipping nuclear if anyone borrowed them without asking never mind nicking then and pretending they owned them!!

ohfourfoxache · 26/09/2018 22:43

Have you got a plan for getting them back?

CrispbuttyNo1 · 26/09/2018 22:51

I would be round there taking them back!

CalonGlas · 26/09/2018 23:32

Totally off the point but I've got a pair of £270 (I think) neoprene Le Chameau wellies that I've worn every day for 5 years to walk the dogs and they look exactly the same as the day I got them. They're good in mud, snow, floods, nettles, sleet, icy winds and they have zips so there's no staggering around trying to keep your socks dry while you haul your leg out of the boot in the rain. It works out about 15p per wear, so far, which seems reasonable enough.
