MIL has stolen my shoes!

This is not a joke...!

Historically I've had a very difficult relationship with Satan my MIL. DH pops his head in once a week on his way home from work but we otherwise have little to do with the witch. We get on OK when we do see her.

Last week I had to work away and she did massively help us out by popping in and checking on the puppy.... and since then I cannot find my very, very naice pair of wellies that my lovely DM treated me to.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, DH went in to say hi yesterday eve and my wellies were there, neat by my backdoor. He immediately said "are they showjumpers wellies?", she laughed and said "no, of course they're not." DH then said "oh showjumper has lost hers, exactly the same."
She then laughed and commented how absentminded I am!!

(I am but that's not the point!)

With risk of sounding awful, I do not think she would be familiar with the brand and even if she was, she would have the money to spend £300+ on a pair of wellies.

WWYD? All suggestions appreciated Grin

""There are two types of mothers-in-law: one of them deserves pig shit and the other... well, cow shit did the trick.""
One of the quotes from that Send Shit website ... brilliant

This has started me thinking about the relationship daughters - and mothers - in - law have with each other in the UK. In India, for example, it might be that the older women put up with a whole load of c**p and then pass it on to the younger generation. And what about binding feet in Imperial China or FGM - women doing it to women! So, in the UK, what do we have? Stealing the younger woman's wellies.....

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/09/2018 19:42

@Aridane - if the costly wellies are more supportive and comfortable, and sturdier than the cheaper options, then don’t you think that they could be cost-effective? Doesn’t it make sense to have the best footwear you can afford, for the work you will do? I think it makes much more sense than buying cheaper ones that only last a small fraction of the time.

Dh buys expensive shoes - they cost a lot more than my shoes, but they last and last and last - and they are the only shoes that he can wear comfortably. He has a pair of these shoes that are older than our marriage - and we had our 26th anniversary this year!

The initial cost of the shoes makes sense because of how long they last - I think these wellies are the same, for the OP.

Theweasleytwins · 27/09/2018 19:53

It must be to annoy you, cant imagine coveting shoes used around poo 😅

Serialweightwatcher · 27/09/2018 19:53

I think you should buy her a pair of cheap wellies, fill them with the willy glitter and have delivered Grin

cheval · 27/09/2018 20:00

Personally, I would just go up there and reclaim them. Leave it alone afterwards. Sounds a very twisted woman.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 27/09/2018 20:07

whatnametouse I was lucky enough to find a pair of Dubarrys on eBay that were exactly my size and were hardly worn for half the price. They are like wearing slippers. So gorgeously comfy and warm. New ones that have only been moulded to your own feet must be even better. Grin

Loving all the ‘how much???’ posts. You do know that there’s lots of different stuff in the world for rich and poor alike? I drive an old land rover but if I was rich I’d have a brand new one. If you can afford it, it’s all relative. Grin

longtompot · 27/09/2018 20:20

Glad you got your boots back. Cheeky MIL! I for one would love to afford a decent pair of outdoor boots. I have recently gone from £10 Dunlops which gave me plantar fasciitis to a pair of Grubs which are warm, dry and comfy. I wish I had gone down half a size as they are a bit big.

Speaking of sizing, how do Dubarrys come up size wise? True to or bigger/smaller than size? I'm just looking on ebay and have found some in superb condition for a good price.

windysocks · 27/09/2018 20:33

Wonder what else she had "borrowed "

SherbrookeFosterer · 27/09/2018 20:33

Let keep them, but hide some of your puppy's poo in them.

YouTheCat · 27/09/2018 20:45

I second getting your dh to put a picture of the wellies as his profile pic on facebook.

glivupa · 27/09/2018 20:46

Definitely worth buying a second pair to keep in good condition and wear too ALL future family events

BiddyPop · 27/09/2018 20:50

I haven’t read the last 2 pages yet, but someone asking about Dubarrys.

I have a pair of their leather sailing ones - Christmas present last year and got a hell f a lot of use and look perfect. Many in our club have them up to 20 years, well well worn but still soft and look very good and don’t leak.

I was thinking about a pair of sorrel boots for use on land this winter as my snow boots are cheap and don’t work well. Are they good?

BiddyPop · 27/09/2018 20:54

(I’m another who looks at cost per wear and long term economic value rather than upfront costs).

Waddsup12 · 27/09/2018 20:57

Ebay's posh wellie searches have probably tripled...

I do like Dubarry's...

BabySharkDooDooDooDoo · 27/09/2018 21:01

ratherbeshowjumping im glad your dh got your wellies back for you. Im seriously tempted to save up and get a pair they look so comfy

Bekstar · 27/09/2018 21:06

Play her at her own game, just casually mention you have had to claim on your house insurance as it looks like they have been stolen and due to the expense of them police are investigating the theft as they have been security marked previously. As you don't want police accusing her later if someone happens to see hers, you have told them she has similar ones and they have suggested they will pop past just to confirm they aren't the same wellies due to their need to tick the boxes. But that your happily confident that they won't be as you cant see anyone be so callous as to steal from family. Then just shrug it off and say you hope they don't cause too much disturbance however they do need too be seen ruling out any possibility however silly.

MauraIsles · 27/09/2018 21:11

@vivazeboo

RTFT!!
OP got the wellies back (they were hers) MIL lied and said OP had given them to her - which she obviously didn’t!

BanjoStarz · 27/09/2018 21:35

God damn it now I want the Ariat boots🤣🤣🤣

Although, are the Le Chameau really good?

My leather boots normally die after 18 months hard wear as I’m lazy about cleaning them - they split across the top of the toe, maybe rubber would last longer? 🤔

Furx · 27/09/2018 21:42

OP I think if you had said Riding Boots you maybe wouldn’t have had all the welly incredulity.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 27/09/2018 21:48

longtompot bang on I’d say, mine are a perfect fit.

NotMyNameButHereForever · 27/09/2018 21:49

CANCEL THE CHEQUE!!!!

Said everyone who hadn't RTFT

Gah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

Either RTFT or don't post - it's not hard is it??!

Blameanamechange · 27/09/2018 22:06

Having retrieved yr wellies I would pop round sometime in the distant future (if you have a key obvs)when shes out and move something from one place to another. Nothing obvious ( like an ornament or swop something around) so that she might not notice for a while. It'll drive her mad not knowing how it moved or maybe shed know it was you but of course you will deny it! I once left a jumper at an ex mils and she gave it to a charity shop as she "didnt know who it belonged to" -cow.

Strongmummy · 27/09/2018 22:19
  1. you’re asking us to take you at your word your Mil is a bitch when there’s no evidence 2) you sound like you’ve got too much time on your hAnds
SharpLily · 27/09/2018 22:25

Stealing isn't evidence she's a bitch?
