Oh dear, obviously a lot of us on here not up to your standards, lol.

Can't remember using obvious Christmas wrapping paper, have been known to use tissue paper, tin foil, hastily child-decorated recycled brown wrapping paper.

I do this all the time. More often tho, I just send them not wrapped up, or give them in the plastic bag from the shop. Its such a waste of paper anyway.......who cares. Life is too short.

FLIER · 12/06/2007 08:20

Well, happy 1st birthday to littekittylette.

I would be a bit miffed too, tbh.
esp if it was from a close relly.

But, it just goes to show the power of marketing/advertising in this day and age, that we feel we HAVE to have event "appropriate" wrapping paper.
When you think about it, what is wrong with self coloured wrapping paper for ANY event, or even brown wrapping paper. I think I might start buying self coloured paper and then it can be used for any event-christmas,,birthdays, anything. In fact I have sometimes used coloured tissue paper which I think looks nicer than wrapping paper anyway.

SSSandy2 · 12/06/2007 08:20

Who is the present from kitty?
You know YABU really, don't you? Everyone gets disappointed for their dc but there will be worse disappointments to come I expect. Just think of all those posters we get on here saying their ILs or parents or the godparents or whoever never sends presents for their dc's birthdays , not even a card.
Be really happy about the present and be really nice about it.
And go have a nice glass of wine

FrannyandZooey · 12/06/2007 08:25

LOL haven't read thread but YABU IMO

at least he got a present, and it even turned up on time! My inlaws can only manage a card posted the day after they have phoned asking did it arrive

oops, better gulp it down quickly before anyone notices then !

anorak · 12/06/2007 08:29

I think this is just about the most snobbish thing I've ever read on mumsnet. People are starving in the third world, people are struggling everywhere with terminal illness, there are battered children, women struggling on their own to raise families, and you're insulted by someone using the wrong kind of paper on a gift for a child who is too young to understand what a birthday is.

Please don't ever invite me anywhere, I'd hate to be a disappointment to you and cause all this heartache for you.

i think i'd find it funny, rather then get my knickers in a twist

anorak · 12/06/2007 08:34

I often do yell stuff like that in my head!

Sorry I don't mean to sound sanctimonious, but honestly! and winnie the pooh adding insult to injury is just...oh...

YABU there is that okay?

Yes you are being unreasonable.

I can't honestly remember the last time I bought wrapping paper for a birthday present.

I use variously;

Brown paper that dd has decorated

Newspaper (making sure there are no horrific images or words. I find one of the Sunday Supplements are usually ok, the travel section can usually be relied upon for a nice picture )

Tin Foil (only for small presents)

Dd's old comics (Beano is good)

Tissue paper

For decoration I have been known to tie up with coloured wool or stick on things such as feathers, buttons or pressed flowers.

All very cheap and cheerful

maisemor · 12/06/2007 09:10

YABU, (and slightly snobby). We have had to use whatever came to hand (be it white paper the children have decorated, rest of x-mas paper, tin foil) due to being broke.

I don't understand why it bothers you, is your child going to keep the paper or the present?

EHM · 12/06/2007 09:24

yes & ungrateful.

DeJager · 12/06/2007 09:35

I confess, I have used chrismas paper once for a birthday!
It's all I had in the house and I honestly was not going to shop just for that when I had so much to do at home, anyway...at least I got a the child a gift lol

elliott · 12/06/2007 09:36

Who is the present from btw?

nogoes · 12/06/2007 09:41

YABU. It is the thought that counts, why should they have to go out and buy overpriced birthday paper when they have perfectly adequate wrapping paper in the house already? It will only get chucked in the bin anyway.

ChippyMinton · 12/06/2007 09:45

Unreasonable. Especially as they went to the trouble of picking out an age appropriate design too.
Happy Birthday to little kittylette all the ame

TooTicky · 12/06/2007 09:49

Fabric makes nice reusable wrapping paper.

bookwormmum · 12/06/2007 10:06

Yes, what's wrong with WTP for a one-year old? I like WTP .

Debbiethemum · 12/06/2007 10:07

This happened to me for ds's 6th bday - only worse!

Not only did his present from grandparents come in christmas wrapping paper - it had Dear C Merry Christmas love from J & M* written on it.

My gripe was that DS can read the message not the wrapping paper

yaddayah · 12/06/2007 10:18

i actually prefer handmade (ie childrens drawing on brown/white paper) i thought thats why dd's nursery sends her home with so much stuff ! We always make birthday cards too .. all the children I know seem to prefer them as they're more personal

I am a lentil weaver .. its offical

YAB slightly U .. at least you got a present !

mylittleimps · 12/06/2007 11:06

only slightly unreasonable but then it's your prerogative how you feel and at least you're letting off your annoyance here rather than with who sent it as they did send a present.

there's plenty of relatives that don't even bother with presents in some families. he'll just be happy he has a shape to rip the wrapping paper off.

i agree with yaddayah we make all Christmas cards and most birthday/special occassion cards and often make the wrapping paper too. i LOVE it! - not sure if everyone did with all the glitter used one CHristams!! people said they were hovering it up for months lol
