I'm actually quite shocked at how many people I know that over time I've come to learn earn extra work as web cam girls.
Apparently it's quite a well known thing.... aibu to have been in the dark! Has this always been a thing?

i didn't realise how common it was until quite recently to be honest so YANBU - i think it's probably a combination of the draw of relatively large amounts of money, coupled with how easy it is to access for people.

Splurge77 · 25/09/2018 23:41

Yeah I know two. Wouldn’t have guessed one. Haven’t really got anything to add.

noeffingidea · 26/09/2018 00:12

Well I don't know any.

GucciMara · 26/09/2018 00:15

Had to read that first sentence at least 3 times to get my head round it!

PlatypusPie · 26/09/2018 00:38

Going to throw the statistics of the responses on here off a but I do know someone who does it. A friend of a( much younger than me) friend, who I have met at some social events involving the mutual friend. Interesting when my friend told our wider social group - the web cam lady is quite open about it - we all had the same reaction, that wasn’t she worried about being recognised in her daily life ?

She is a very attractive and striking woman, but apparently isn’t as recognisable when she puts the heavy make up on. From my few intera tions with her, she seems bright and very confident. I’m not sure how or why she go to into it , from a more conventional career, but it seems to provide a living for her and her son. He’s about 7 now - maybe it will be more of a concern in a few years that one of his friends may see it and tease him .

CoughLaughFart · 26/09/2018 00:40

Not sure what you want from this thread.

Losingthewill1 · 26/09/2018 01:40

So... your judging women trying to make money.

Hope they read this :)

SilverLining10 · 26/09/2018 07:08

Yanbu I dont know anyone who does this.

Beaverhausen · 26/09/2018 07:13

Maybe a journalist angling for an article.

EscapeToTheMoon · 26/09/2018 07:21

I don’t know any.

And if i did I wouldn’t associate with them. Yuck

RoseAndRose · 26/09/2018 07:22

I think use of the term 'girls' in connection with any form of sex work is abhorrent. Children have no place in this, even in minor speech habits.

(Not persuaded it's a career for 'ladies', either, but at least that"/ a term for an adult woman)

Yes, since technology has given new options, there have been people who use it to sell titillation. It started with phone lines, and the first big expansion was with the roll out of hands free phones. Yes, people work for these companies - presumably because they need an income.

But the people who are making the big money and are getting the real clout/power are those who own or are senior in the distribution companies. There isn't a career path from operative to any position with any power/influence. Which is a reason why it's a poor career choice, totally separate from any views on the morals. Better to spend the time on training, or in a job with prospects, even if those prospects are quite limited it's better than zero.

RedPanda2 · 26/09/2018 08:12

Do you judge the men that pay the sex workers (sex work is work btw) as harshly as you are judging the sex workers? No supply without demand.

KatesMott · 26/09/2018 08:47

@RoseAndRose The dictionary definition for girls also includes young and/or immature women. I’m in my mid 30s and still refer to myself as such. Maybe that’s my immaturity...
Also, why do you feel it’s not a “career for ladies” - seems a little disparaging towards the countless women, including arguably myself at one point, who work under the broader scope of the umbrella term ‘sex work’

ShouldofWouldofCouldof · 26/09/2018 08:55

Loving the "no one i know has ever done it" brigade. How would you know? I doubt the ladies (or gents) that are doing it broad cast it around their local. I have known several people who have been cam workers/ phone workers/lap dancers. One person is even a text sex worker. They have a fulltime job but do the texting on the side. In one day they can earn more than they do a week on their professional job! These people Have ranged from 18-60. Most of their families don't know what they do on the side. Its a job unless they are dealing drugs or luring kids in then its no ones business what they do. Dont be so naive and judgemental, sex is the oldest trade.

Gardai · 26/09/2018 08:59

I don't think anyone was saying "I don't know one" in a sanctimonious fashion.
It was more as a response on my part to a weird post that seemed to be a request for details blah blah blah.

BunsOfAnarchy · 26/09/2018 09:02

Only person i know who does this is a stripper.

No one else! Didnt think it was that common

KeeVee · 26/09/2018 11:05

So... your judging women trying to make money.

Hope they read this smile

I'd judge my mum if she were making money that wayHmm

Littlecaf · 26/09/2018 11:08

I know a lot of people who have started their own business slapping Annie Sloan paint on old tatty furniture and selling it as “upcycled”. Is it the same thing?

glagdy · 26/09/2018 11:30

@Littlecaf GrinGrinGrin

Gardai · 26/09/2018 11:50

I put dodgy clothes on a mannequin and photograph them for money
