To want to cut my labia off?

RedCanna · 25/09/2018 20:27

I have name changed for this because Blush Blush Blush [Apologies to Georgia O'Keeffe].

I don't mean do it at home with a pair of scissors, I mean have labiaplasty surgery.

I hate my labia minora, I always have; I remember being horrified the first time I ever properly looked at myself down there. They are big and long and hang down 3cm (yes I did actually measure them for the purpose of this thread!)

Some of my previous intimate partners have commented negatively about them and I always feel embarrassed by them. I've been single for years and the idea of getting naked in front of anyone ever again seems impossible. They also get in the way and become very sore sometimes.

But I count myself a feminist and fundamentally disapprove of the concept of women having unnecessary surgery in order to meet male expectations of how our bodies should look. I would be betraying my own ideals, wouldn't I?

Your previous partners sound like dickheads.

This has to be your call, though - do you think you could overcome it and learn to like them? Do you want to overcome it?

MaggieAndHopey · 25/09/2018 20:29

I dunno, but your thread title has made my labia retract like a samurai's balls.

GoodFortuneAttendThee · 25/09/2018 20:30

If they are causing you pain then you would not simply be doing it to modify your appearance, would you?

Pemba · 25/09/2018 20:30

But you wouldn't be doing it to meet male expectations, you'd be doing it for your own comfort, as it seems to be causing a problem to you. So to get the surgery would be fine, surely?

NoTeaNoShadeNoPinkLemonade · 25/09/2018 20:31

hmm I dunno the getting sore bit would be enough for me...also your exes sound horrible.

MaggieAndHopey · 25/09/2018 20:32

On another note, there's an excellent instagram page which celebrates the wide variety of labia in the wild:

Namethecat · 25/09/2018 20:32

No - not if your doing it for medical which it sounds like you are. Go to your gp and ask to be referred . You shouldn't have to go through life being sore.

SoftlyCatchyMonkey1 · 25/09/2018 20:32

"They also get in the way and become very sore sometimes"
So it's not really just a cosmetic issue here

EK36 · 25/09/2018 20:33

Try looking at it as a different body part. If it were exceptionally large breasts that felt sore and uncomfortable then you'd only want the surgery to make you feel comfortable not to look better for future partners. I say, " why not if it's what you want and you can afford it, go for it".

RonniePickering · 25/09/2018 20:34

I once watched a documentary about a woman who did indeed cut her own off, with scissors, in the bath 😬

Notacluewhatthisis · 25/09/2018 20:35

To be fair I would do it, if it's painful or even uncomfortable to live with.

It doesn't make you any less of a feminist.

SnuggyBuggy · 25/09/2018 20:36

No harm in seeking a medical opinion

MozzchopsThirty · 25/09/2018 20:36

OP I had nipple correction surgery this year and I can honestly say it's the best money I've ever spent
I also had comments from literally everyone who ever saw them

Now I am amazed by them every day, they look normal and like everyone else's

I say go for it

(And I can recommend an amazing plastic surgeon)

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 25/09/2018 20:37

Ronnie WTF? Why?

Disquieted1 · 25/09/2018 20:37

To he'll with feminism. If it's causing you physical and psychological discomfort do what's right for you.

EdWinchester · 25/09/2018 20:37

I would do it - sounds awful.

TheDairyQueen · 25/09/2018 20:38

I'm fairly certain my labia looks more like road kill than a zoological attraction.

Sparklesocks · 25/09/2018 20:38

If they’re getting in the way and becoming an issue in day to day life I think labiaplasty is an option. I saw a doc on it once and it was a very neat op, they used lasers for precision.
Labia come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and are unique to the woman, but if they get sore you might want to have a consultation.

user1490607838 · 25/09/2018 20:38

Yeah, look into it, if you think it will make you feel better.

BE CAREFUL though, because I did see a programme once, where a woman had a bit too much chopped off, and her pee started spraying everywhere when she went to the loo. (The labia helps to funnel the wee apparently...)

I am sorry that your partners have made you feel shit about it.

Oblomov18 · 25/09/2018 20:39

How much does it cost?
And how painful is it?

What's stopping you?

RonniePickering · 25/09/2018 20:39

She didn’t like the appearance of them Jesus, so decided to get in the bath and do it in there, but she began to bleed profusely and had to call an ambulance!

She was half laughing recounting the tale. It was on TV around 10 years ago, can’t remember what the documentary was.

PerfectPenquins · 25/09/2018 20:40

Its causing you pain and discomfort, for that there is no way your unreasonable to get it done to be free of that pain. Good luck xxx

Notacluewhatthisis · 25/09/2018 20:40

Oh and I had my boobs done. They were huge and uncomfortable. I also hates the amount of male attention they attracted.

I was making myself more comfortable. No way would I have not done, because some dickhead men thought my boobs were fair game and I needed to be more feminist and stand up to them.

Thatstheendofmytether · 25/09/2018 20:42

Actually OP I get it, one side of mine is bigger than the other and hanged down slightly which is annoying enough and it gets sore so I can imagine yours are very irritating. If I could have I little taken off it I would but only for my personal comfort. If you can have it done and it will make you feel better then go for it I don't think you are bu.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 25/09/2018 20:42

”But I count myself a feminist and fundamentally disapprove of the concept of women having unnecessary surgery in order to meet male expectations of how our bodies should look. I would be betraying my own ideals, wouldn't I?”

@RedCanna - I don’t think you would be betraying your ideals, because you aren’t doing this to conform to male expectations, but for yourself - that makes all the difference, in my book.

I am sorry that you have met such judgemental arseholes in the past - pity there is no surgery that can improve their characters!
