Ask what age kids came out of car seat?

My kids aren’t at that stage yet.
But we are having to buy a new car seat for her.
I know the law is 135cm or 12 years old.
She’s about 128cm at the moment at 7 years old.
So potentially she could be out of the seat at 8 years old which seems awful young.

Can you keep them in the seat after 135 cm?

Yes you can.

YeTalkShiteHen · 25/09/2018 17:00

No because it makes them too tall and actually endangers them.

DS1 was out of his at 8.5, it felt odd but he was the right height.

stargirl1701 · 25/09/2018 17:11

150cm is gold standard, I think.

Our Klippan Triofix Recline is to 12 years.

SusannahD · 25/09/2018 17:13

Most go to 150cm now

NannyOldElf · 25/09/2018 17:13

DS is 8, 135cm and still comfortably in his HBB. he will stay there until 150cm (which is the law in france where we travel a lot). He doesnt like it as most of his friends are out of theirs but that's just tough!

SpringerLink · 25/09/2018 17:14

Depends on your seat, so it’s had to advise. Many are safe up to 150cm. But that’s just a guide. You should be able to fit 2 fingers (about 3cm) between their shoulders and the headrest of the car seat, assuming it’s a high backed booster.

My DS was in a rear facing, 5 point harness seat until 8. He’s quite small for his age (was 121 cm). You can’t really generalise.

Fatted · 25/09/2018 17:16

150cm?! Really?! That's how tall I am!! Do I have to use one now?! I'm 38.

I was always told to keep them in one until they reached the age limit, even if they reached the height limit. Although my 5YO is over 120cm tall now so I dread to think how tall he will be at 12!

TabbyMumz · 25/09/2018 17:16

150cm seems a bit ridiculous to me. Mine were 135cm at about 8, to be honest they were desperate to be off the booster by then.

TabbyMumz · 25/09/2018 17:17

Most 12 year olds would be touching the ceiling if still sat on a booster.

Mindchilder · 25/09/2018 17:20

I'm about 150cm and tbh the adult seat belt doesn't fit me very well so I probably would be safer on a booster!

NannyOldElf · 25/09/2018 17:23

it's only partly about height, its about the strength of the bones. a 150cm adult has strong enough bones to travel with the seat belt sitting slightly wrong. a child under 12 has much weaker bones so its much more important that the seat belt fits across the correct part of the body in the event of a crash.

i do not understand so many parents' desperation for their kids to be out of car seats, its far safer with them.

Crackedvase · 25/09/2018 17:26

135cm. My 11 yo dd is 162cm. She was out of HBB at 8

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 25/09/2018 17:30

Ds2 came out at the 135cm around age 8. The rules were less strict with dd and ds1, although dd was shorter for her age, so kept the backless booster for longer.

ShowOfHands · 25/09/2018 17:32

My DD reached the same height as me around her 11th birthday. She couldn't sit on a booster without cracking her head on the roof of the car.

Odiepants · 25/09/2018 17:33

My nearly 9 Ds is still in his at 137cm but there's no way the seatbelt site in the right place currently without it - he has long legs and a short body so The seatbelt is in his neck without the seat. His UHH still fits fine height wise. He has moaned but it's not happening until the seatbelt is in a better position on his body.

Odiepants · 25/09/2018 17:35

HBB not whatever the autocorrect felt like there!

GerdaLovesLili · 25/09/2018 17:39

SmallDS was out of his when it was obvious that being in the booster was making his legs interfere with the back of my seatbelt. We measured him and he was way over the 135cm limit. He was about 9and a half, but he'd probably been too tall for it long before that.

Strawberrytraveller · 25/09/2018 17:41

Its 150cm in the rest of Europe, only 135cm in England as the minimum. Therefore i would aim for 150cm if possible.

xyzandabc · 25/09/2018 17:44

Dc1 was 11 and well over 140cm. While she still fitted in the seat, why not, it's safer than without. But wanted her out of it before secondary school as that wouldn't have been good.

Dc2 is 9 and just about 135cm but again will stay in the hbb until it's no longer comfortable. She will be at least 10, possibly 11 like dc1.

Dc3 is only 6 but tall. I expect he won't fit in a hbb by the time he is 9. But will stay I it until he outgrows it regardless of height.

Aeroflotgirl · 25/09/2018 17:44

Wow Stargirl, do they rear face them at 12 with that car seat! DD 11 was out of the HBB 6 months ago, at 140, she would be too wide for the HBB now even though she is only 11.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 25/09/2018 17:52

It's 145cm here in Ireland, DD came out of a booster seat at around the time she turned 10.

OvO · 25/09/2018 17:54

My eldest was 12 when we got rid of his! He was under the height limit - finally had his growth spurt though.

My youngest is almost 11 and still in his. He's got an inch or so to go so will wait until he hits 150cm.

DunesOfSand · 25/09/2018 17:55

Saw this graphic on MN a few weeks ago. And was in a taxi with no carseats at the weekend (i live in a country where very very few use carseats- baby is usually cradled in Mums arms in the front seat, and toddlers are unrestrained in the back).
Anyway, my 137cm 9 year old can pass step 1 and 5, and possibly 4. But is miles off 2 and 3. We are retaining the HBB for the majority of travel.

Cachailleacha · 25/09/2018 17:57

Mine was 10 and 138cm. Depends on the seat and the size of your car how tall they can still use it up to.

Random18 · 25/09/2018 17:58

That’s good to know it’s ok to go longer than 135cm. I did feel she would be too young. And she’s quite skinny so would be worried that seatbelt alone won’t give her the protection she needs.
Most importantly didn’t fancy buying a seat and using it for only a year Grin
