to think that if you are selling menstrual pads & think that the word is 'woman' is offensive then you deserve to go out of business

If "trans men" are distressed by periods it seems to me they need mental health help to come to terms with their own identity and biology. Pretending there is no connection between females and periods is not the answer.

Splurge77 · 25/09/2018 20:02

Has anyone said that? I think many just don’t like being called women. That’s the point isn’t it? is it ‘evil’ of them to feel like that?

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 25/09/2018 20:10

It is not inclusive to call women 'menstruators'. Almost thr opposite in fact.

Splurge77 · 25/09/2018 20:16

I don’t follow. They’re calling people who menstruate ‘menstruators’. Is it because you think women who don’t menstruate will somehow feel left out?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 25/09/2018 20:17

@PiperPublickOccurrences

How could you use such a blatantly gendered phrase right at the start of your post without giving a clear warning beforehand?

I'm so upset and offended. Now, where were those pearls....? Grin

mindutopia · 25/09/2018 20:18

Why would this offend anyone?

I have a friend who is very much a woman in the biological sense and she lives as a woman as far as anyone call tell but absolutely hates the word, “woman”. She finds it really patronising. I have other friends who are trans men who still get periods (because biologically they are female). Trans men need pads too depending on whether hormones have stopped them. If you are pro-“woman”, I don’t get all the hating on other women.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 25/09/2018 20:23

It is denying the reality of biological sex, such that the only way the word woman is allowed to be used is in how someone 'feels'.

TurfClub · 25/09/2018 20:24

"but calling transmen evil because they would rather not be called women..."

lol wot? This is an advert for menstrual pads. Not transmen menstrual pads, just menstrual pads. Nobody's calling transmen evil.

The point is that the Content Warning strongly infers that the word “woman” is triggering/offensive. As a woman I find that troubling. If we cannot use the word “woman” then what are we - non men? I find that offensive and worrying.

TurfClub · 25/09/2018 20:31

"I don’t follow. They’re calling people who menstruate ‘menstruators’."

But people who menstruate are not called 'menstruators'. They are called 'women'.

The fact that transmen might also menstruate, or that some women don't menstruate doesn't change that.

It's horrible to refer to reduce women to 'menstruators'.

OP posts:
Splurge77 · 25/09/2018 20:35

But it’s not saying that the word ‘woman’ is offensive in and of itself, the ‘Content Warning’ is presumably aimed at transmen who menstruate, because they’re biologically female, but don’t like being called ‘women’.

I think the argument in here is that transmen should just accept being called women and if they don’t theyre evil.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 25/09/2018 20:40

No one is calling trans men evil. But nice attempt to derail.

Splurge77 · 25/09/2018 20:41

But they aren’t reducing women to ‘menstruators’, quite the opposite. Saying ‘woman = someone who menstruates’ is reductive.

Presumably they’d acknowledge that a lot of women menstruate and others do not.

Splurge77 · 25/09/2018 20:43

So who precisely are the ‘horrific evil people’ in the OP?

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 25/09/2018 20:44

People who are trying to remove the use of the word woman in any biological context.

TurfClub · 25/09/2018 20:47

Transmen are in many ways women, that's why girl's magazines like 'Your guide to Anal sex' Teen Vogue feature lots of articles by transmen. Because transmen, however they now identify, share biology, socialization with women, and a transman is consuming biologically female media (be it Anal Sex For Girls, Tumblr, Youtube channels, etc), as part of their transition, and you can only be a transman if you first start with female biology, which does in fact mean something.

You can pass as a man, have a male name, whatever it is you want to do. But that does not entitle you or anyone else to negate the word 'woman' in favour of 'pregnant people', 'menstruators', or any other such nonsense,.

Your 1 in a million identity doesn't change the reality of 'women' and 'men' as biological classes.

OP posts:
Splurge77 · 25/09/2018 20:48

And who are those people? And who was the ‘CW’ likely aimed at here?

Vinylsamso · 25/09/2018 20:48

I don’t read this to have anything relating to women/feminism at all.
It seems to me it’s about natural health. It appears to be dismissing the theory some people have that periods are supposed /expected to be painful ( just a normal thing for a woman).
People that believe in natural health dismiss this idea and say that a certain diet will decrease or eliminate painful if heavy periods. Am I missing something here because I’m pretty sure this is what this add is about?

TurfClub · 25/09/2018 20:48

"So who precisely are the ‘horrific evil people’ in the OP?"

The company referring to teenage girls as 'teen menstruators'.

OP posts:
Vinylsamso · 25/09/2018 20:51

Oh actually, think I get it now. Some nutter has found that add and said it’s using “gendered language” lol. I’m out of here, I can’t even waste my breath on such craziness 🙄

TurfClub · 25/09/2018 20:51

"I don’t read this to have anything relating to women/feminism at all. "

Hmm? There's a CW (content warning) for 'gendered language'. The article itself is written by someone who uses the normal terms 'woman' and 'female', but the people who linked to it (Lunapads) felt that the use of these terms deserved a 'content warning'.

It's a statement that the use of the word 'woman' is offensive.

Vinylsamso · 25/09/2018 20:52

Thanks for clarifying. Worlds gone mad.

Honestly this just reads like ‘it’s PC gone mad’ to me.

WrongOnTInternet · 25/09/2018 20:54

I keep waiting (hopefully) for someone to pop up and say 'ha ha, fooled you'. The human species, along with other mammal species, are so strongly dimorphic it is a rule. Rare exceptions do not break that rule any more than animals being born with two heads changes the rule that animals have one head. Adult human females are called women and juvenile females are called girls in our language. We are 50% of the population, and no, the incredibly fragile feelings of a small minority of males who wish they could have the moon on a stick are not more important than our feelings, let alone our safety.

But presumably the people sensitive to ‘gendered language’ in an article about dealing with menstruation are transmen, not transwomen?
