Question about UC and agency work

cuttttiee · 25/09/2018 09:28

Sorry not aibu but needed answers, my partner had been offered work with an agency but we currently have a joint UC claim. How does him doing this work affect our claim? I'm worried I'm going to loose what bit of money we get!
Thank you

Ok so if you have children and you UC doesn't cover rent then you have a work allowance of £409 that means that you will get £409 UC and then the remaining £126 UC will get the 63p per pound earned deducted from it so for example...

If you get £535 UC and your partner earns £500 you will get
£500 wages
£455.62 UC
(worked out by £409 UC that comes under the work allowance and £46.62 which is 37% of the remaining £126 not counted in the work allowance)

So if your partner earned £500 a month you would get £955.62 A month total which is nearly double what you get now.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/universal-credit-work-allowances/universal-credit-work-allowances

This link is where I got that information from.

cuttttiee · 25/09/2018 10:51

Sorry yes UC does cover rent but it goes straight to landlord, so we are left with 535
But in total its about 880
Thank you that makes much more sense

Pickles it does include rent the op just didn’t mention the rent payment.
Op you will not be worse off you will definitely be better off. You just won’t get to keep all wages and all UC.

MyDcAreMarvel · 25/09/2018 10:52

Op the work allowance will be different if rent included less generous.

MyDcAreMarvel · 25/09/2018 10:54

£535 seems really low for two adults and two children even without rent?

MyDcAreMarvel · 25/09/2018 10:56

See you should be getting much more.

Question about UC and agency work
cuttttiee · 25/09/2018 11:22

OK yes it makes sense now.
But he is due to start next week, we get UC on the 4th. Does that mean we will end up repaying them the 500 odd come November? Oh god I'm worrying about everything!
There's apparently a lot of repayments that we've been deducted for so that's why it's less

No repayments.
They have a cut off date.
They will work out Everything from say the 26th of one month to the 26th of the next month. Then calculate everything from there. Meaning they will just recalculate the period after his pay date.
You have an awful lot of questions and don't really know what's going on with your payments or How they work.
Universal credit website had lots of Q and As that I think would benefit you.
I read it in and out before applying so I knew everything that could go wrong and how different things affect me.
In the nicest possible way, it seems mad that you know absolutely nothing about the system that is supporting you and you should be aware of all changes that could and do affect you and your children's lives.

Musereader · 25/09/2018 11:38

They will still pay your rent, your UC will be reduced by £63 per £100 he earns, so £500 earnings - is 5x£63 so £315 off your UC

You get £535 so £315 off that is £220, but your rent is still already paid for you.
So wages + UC is £500 +£220 = 720 and you do not need to pay rent

Musereader · 25/09/2018 11:45

if your partner earns between £850 and £1400 per month then you may have to worry about rent, but as pp said there is the protected amount on top of that that you need to find out what that is

cuttttiee · 25/09/2018 13:01

I didn't really have a choice about UC, I got put onto it as I moved in with my partner

Put onto his claim I mean

28 hours a week at minimum wage is much more than £500 a month unless he's under 21? It's roughly £220 a week.
