To tell a child off for removing her jumper by pulling it from the neck over her head

She’s 13. Am I wrong to feel shocked at seeing her pull her clothes off like this? She was trying on an expensive knitted jumper. It was meant for her smaller sister but she didn’t realise. She then took one hand and grabbed the neckline and dragged it off over her head with me standing shocked and appalled. Am I wrong to make a fuss? It hadn’t occurred to me that she didn’t know how to undress properly. In my opinion this is ‘wrong’.

I would remove the jumper from the bottom hem up over my head, turning it inside out in the process, stops the neck getting stretched, not sure why people think the only way to do it is to pull it by the neck. OP YABU however, if she's wearing makeup and does it the way I do she would get makeup around the neck of the jumper. Also, appalled , bit of an overreaction

Bestseller · 23/09/2018 22:04

Huh? Mother taught me to take a jumper off like that, less likely to make it misshapen than the other way with elbows in the front (or is there a third way)

Either way, I've always felt children shouldn't be in clothes you need to worry about. If this can make you appalled, then you should buy younger DD a cheaper jumper

funnylittlefloozie · 23/09/2018 22:06

I wish i had time to get shocked and appalled about how people take off their jumpers!

GunpowderGelatine · 23/09/2018 22:07

Is she your daughter OP?

Ethylred · 23/09/2018 22:07

I've taken my clothes off like that since I was 2.
The world is still turning on its axis.

GunpowderGelatine · 23/09/2018 22:09

I'm not shock or appalled but I'm surprised how many people take jumpers off this way, does it not mess your hair up?

Zegos · 23/09/2018 22:14

I pull off tahirts/jumpers by the neck, your making an absolute drama out of nothing “shocked and appalled” get a grip!

PinkHeart5914 · 23/09/2018 22:17

Blimey if this makes you shocked and appalled I bet you don’t watch the news often, that would definitely push you over the edge!

Such an ott reaction....

JellyBears · 23/09/2018 22:19

Shocked and appalled might be a slight/total overreaction...

BearFoxBear · 23/09/2018 22:21

Calm down ffs. I honestly couldn't work myself up about this at all. Poor kid.

theworldistoosmall · 23/09/2018 22:21

I do it this way. No having to turn them the right way round afterwards. Necklines haven't gone weird. Have a couple of jumpers from years ago and still fine.

flowery · 23/09/2018 22:21

A child or your child?

KurriKurri · 23/09/2018 22:21

Jesus - the child is out of control - does she take her trousers off over her feet as well ??? Shock

IfIWasABirdIdFlyIn2ACeilingFan · 23/09/2018 22:22

I’m going to guess, just a hunch, this is a step child.

Candymay · 23/09/2018 22:24

Ok so maybe shocked and appalled is a bit strong but yes it’s about the neck being out of shape and it looks like a rough way to treat clothes. In my mind the ‘correct’ way is sleeves first and then over the head. Not over the head by pulling at the neck to drag the sleeves off. Yes I’m sure it’s an overreaction. That’s why I posted here. I’m aware that not everyone would be bothered by the same things as me.

In the title you say 'a child' is she not yours then OP?

AynRandTheObjectivist · 23/09/2018 22:25

Men do it this way. Women cross their arms in front of them and then pull it up from the hem. I don't know why.

whitsernam · 23/09/2018 22:27

Candymay I'm with you. I do it exactly as you do, and taught my sons this way. Much less stretching of the neck.

Passmethecrisps · 23/09/2018 22:29

This has made me giggle.

GunpowderGelatine · 23/09/2018 22:30

I wouldn't tell my DD off but I'd ask her to do it a different way as yes it stretches the neck line. When I was breastfeeding I found it took very little to ruin a neckline entirely by pulling at it too much!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 23/09/2018 22:30

I would be fumming, I would.

Sunnyjac · 23/09/2018 22:31

Sleeves first? That just stretches the sleeves. First world problem Hmm

titchy · 23/09/2018 22:31

Sleeves first ShockShockShock But that's wrong - you get sleeves stretching to the floor that way.

Wear cardigans.
