To think a Peoples vote with no option to remain is less than useless

So it looks like labour may choose to support a people's vote but Leonard McClusky secretary of Unite the Union, the biggest donor to the Labour Party has today said he supports a people's vote but with no option to vote remain. AIBU to think that a referendum to vote on a deal that has already been rejected by Europe, with no option to vote remain would be totally pointless.

I agree.

Fragolino · 23/09/2018 20:37

I don't think he cares about the referendum one jot.all they want is to get into power.

tenredthings · 23/09/2018 20:39

I don't think they care either. I think they are just putting the idea of offering a second referendum out there to get the votes in. This just shows how duplicitous they really are.

I agree. They are using brexit as a vehicle hoping some fools will for for it but I don't think anyone will.

jcyclops · 23/09/2018 20:50

The problem is there will be three options when a deal is finalised:-

  1. Accept the deal and leave (soft Brexit)
  2. Reject the deal and leave (hard Brexit)
  3. Reject the deal and remain. McCluskey's preference for a vote between 1 and 2 only is just as unreasonable as the "People's Vote" group's preference for a vote between 1 and 3 only.
tenredthings · 23/09/2018 20:59

To be fair reject the deal and leave would have such disastrous consequences it shouldn't be an option .

Yet it should be there.

Annandale · 23/09/2018 21:07

Sounds like the AV referendum. Fix the options, fix the result. Will of the people innit.

tenredthings · 23/09/2018 21:10

Somethings, like the choice of no deal, IMO should not be put to popular vote. It's easy to think "fuck you Europe , we'll go it alone " but the real consequences of such a choice are difficult to understand, complex and may well be devastating for the Uk.

Annandale

The sad thing is that if we had managed to get away from FPTP we wouldn't be in this mess.

But you shouldn't be able to remove things from a ballot just because you don't like it.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 23/09/2018 21:15

Leaving without a deal should not be an option on any ballot paper. Nothing that would be a disaster if people are dumb enough to vote for it should be on the ballot paper.

DamsonGin · 23/09/2018 21:16

The whole thing is still such a political football for the Tories and for Labour that I just can't be doing with any of the fuckers. If someone can actually put forward a reasonable proposal that won't screw everyone over, especially the Northern Irish, then I'll pay attention. Yet to see that happen.

borntobequiet · 23/09/2018 21:17

Yes.

Justanotherlurker · 23/09/2018 21:22

I think if we split the leave vote we should also split the remain vote

i.e.

Hard Remain - Full in on euro, push for harder, deeper integration like common defense force, cede more power to the EP

Soft Remain - Pretty much status quo, no changing current course of the EU

Reform Remain - Stay a member but use the veto to enforce some reform of the EU in the direction more in line with UK popular opinion (allowing greater control over immigration, ability to opt-out of directives and so on)

That would help even things out a bit, but as a PP has said it has become such a political football, and now with JC hinting he make back a second referendum and the CLP caring more about Palestine than Brexit it shows how much of a shit show it all is.

borntobequiet · 24/09/2018 08:06

I meant no! Am I Theresa May?
