To think a snap election will be called by the end of the year?

AIBU to seriously think we’ll have a snap election by the end of this year?

Although it’s been mentioned as an option at certain points over the last few months, it seems like now - after Theresa May went to talks in Austria last week with other EU leaders - there could be a real possibility that a snap election will soon be called.

Reuters, the Times, the Mail and other papers have all suggested it this morning:

God I hope not

Interesting theory but it would just delay the inevitable.

Who wants her job at the moment?

Why is everything in AIBU?

garethsouthgatesmrs · 23/09/2018 01:18

If there was I have literally havd no idea who I would vote for. In a way it would be a clever move. Who would ths remainers vote for? Vince Cable has already retired and I don't know anyone else who has even the slightest clue how people like me feel.

RedneckStumpy · 23/09/2018 01:22

The job of PM right now is essentially the job of “suicide bomb tester” no one wants it.

No political party wants to go down in history as the party that killed the country.

HirplesWithHaggis · 23/09/2018 01:47

Maybe it's a way to try for a softer Brexit deal. If Theresa can gain an actual majority (and she remains ahead in the polls) that means she doesn't have to rely on the DUP to get her policies through, so there might be a chance of compromise on the Irish border (in the sea) and the saving of the Good Friday Agreement.
Lots of mights and maybes, and her last snap election didn't give her what she wanted, but when you're staring No Deal and the economic collapse of the country right in the face, I guess it could be worth a try.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 23/09/2018 01:53

I hope not, the country cannot take the risk that there is a 1% chance Corbyn becomes PM.

HirplesWithHaggis · 23/09/2018 02:04

While I have very little time for Corbyn, I can't see him doing any worse than the Tories. He might gain more negotiating time, wouldn't be carrying toxic baggage, and wouldn't be dancing to the DUP's tune.

Maybe a snap election is the answer.

Never ending referendums and elections. No thanks !

5Yearplan4000 · 23/09/2018 02:25

We are not staring at economic collapse! This is complete nonsense.

GretchenFranklin · 23/09/2018 02:32

A poll of Labour membership is showing 89% in favour of a new vote on EU and it's possible JC etc will capitulate.

Interesting.

HirplesWithHaggis · 23/09/2018 02:40

In a new vote, what would the question be? Same as the last one?

5Yearplan4000 · 23/09/2018 02:41

People will not be running into the arms of Jeremy Corbyn just because he offers another referendum. What if the result is 52:48 in favour of remain? Best of 3?

HirplesWithHaggis · 23/09/2018 03:03

I'm not sure Jeremy knows that. He's hinting he might think about maybe, very generously, letting Scotland have indyref2 should he be elected. That'll have 'em running to the polls!

Not.

HirplesWithHaggis · 23/09/2018 13:13

Aaaaaaaand he's changed his mind on that. He's apparently willing to make a manifesto commitment to rule it out. Democracy in action, will of the people, fuck you Scotland.

ManicSunday · 23/09/2018 13:37

I don't get why the Tories could think this is a good idea after last June's fiasco???
