Obviously he isn't always a hero and you don't always get the hero you want or need. However a hero he is for the simple fact he had the honesty to state the obvious that the British people were lied to in the run up to the referendum.

If he was a full time hero he should have added more details of the current fuckery that is ongoing but alas he was only brave for a moment.

So why would I make the 'comparison' if it is likey to be more difficult for an Iraqi?
Am I being anti-Semitic for not making a comparison to an Israeli?
Whaaat??

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 24/09/2018 10:12

No, I mean certain passport holders will obviously find it difficult to get visas generally. (My Turkish sister in law who lives in France and is married to a French man was recently denied a visa to go to the US just for a holiday.) But there is a sort of assumption being made that if you come from the "right" sort of country like the US, Canada, New Zealand etc, you won't have any problems, and that the UK will be considered the "right" sort of country post Brexit. I don't think either of those things should be assumed.

Hazardswan · 24/09/2018 17:26

The thread has established my brexit back up z plan to marry a French man is a no go...or not an easy plan z. Damn. I'll have to keep praying brexit is canelled then....DP wasn't a fan of plan z anyway.

Find out which countries in the EU let you apply for citizenship the quickest after marriage and then find someone from that country and marry them!

Hazardswan · 24/09/2018 21:55

Okay! Plan Z is still on the table then Grin

Apparently, Germany are already putting motions in place of favourable terms for UK citizens... just something I saw on Twitter. I haven't looked into it.

Might be worth a scooby?

Plan z is back on!

Ridiculous. Ooh he’s so handsome la la la. Meanwhile at home his approval rating has cratered to 29% and he is seen for what he is. Vain posturing idiot in the mould of Blair.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 25/09/2018 06:51

Say what you like about Blair, this spectacular balls up would never have happened on his watch.

Mistigri · 25/09/2018 07:17

Indeed Ethel ...

French presidents are never popular. What interests me is how the centre has held in France - between them LREM and MoDem (kind of the French equivalent of New Labour and the Lib Dems, with Macron playing Blair and Bayrou playing Paddy Ashdown) have the support of about half of the electorate. This is not a story you will read in the UK press.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 25/09/2018 07:26

That's an interesting comparison. I didn't realise Bayrou was sort of a Lib Dem equivalent. I've always wondered how aligned DH and I are politically because when you've never voted in the same country it's hard to tell. He has typically voted for Bayrou in the first round and the least worst candidate in the second round.

Mistigri · 25/09/2018 07:32

The parallels only go so far, tbh. It's a bit facile but my point is that the French electorate are less extreme than the UK press would have you think.

Clionba · 25/09/2018 07:40

ManicUnicorn British people went to live in France long, long before the EU. Have fun!

Indeed. Have fun with the hoop jumping.

We moved to France post EU but pre full FoM. I was working so got my carte de séjour without any major issues. However, my then DP was refused a residence permit, because he was doing up our house rather than being formally employed. We had to get married so he could live legally in France and access healthcare.

Clionba · 25/09/2018 07:47

That's my point, Mistigri people think that the EU regs will always be straightforward and in their favour, and before the EU nothing was possible.

Mistigri · 25/09/2018 07:52

I don't think we do agree at all.

Current EU FOM regs make it extremely easy for Britons to move to France.

Prior to 2004 the situation was less simple, even within the EU. And Brexit will make it more complicated still.

Clionba · 25/09/2018 16:46

Well I lived in Italy before FOM and it was straight forward. Probably depends where in Europe and how much red tape they have.

Stonking speech from Macron to the UN: he's a hero for standing up and saying this. Highlights here: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1044622608652791808.html
