To ask if you tip in a salon?

I never tip a stylist in a salon or a beautician after a wax, etc. Am I wrong? DM recently told me I should be giving them at least a fiver on every visit, but I feel a bit uncomfortable doing that. I feel that the prices are quite high in salons these days anyway, but there’s always an awkward silence after I’ve paid as if they expect more. Should I be tipping?

I never do. I pay a fair price and I think that's enough

Sailorsgirl44 · 21/09/2018 18:05

No

BitchQueen90 · 21/09/2018 18:06

I never do. My hairdresser for example is self employed and has plenty of clients. She earns more than me!

BridgeFarmKefir · 21/09/2018 18:06

I tip my hairdresser because she's brilliant. She always goes the extra mile, fits me in when she can, has been known to open early for me etc. And it's hard to find a great hairdresser. I will tip a pound or two for a good mani. Unlike the US, it's a bit more of a grey area in the U.K. but I think it's worth giving a little extra when someone does a great job.

BunsOfAnarchy · 21/09/2018 18:07

What?

Is this a thing?

Justkeeprollingalong · 21/09/2018 18:09

Never, they charge enough as it is.

19lottie82 · 21/09/2018 18:10

I don’t tip the hairdresser but I always give the apprentice who washes my hair a few pounds.

Xiaoxiong · 21/09/2018 18:11

My DM taught me to give whoever washed my hair 5% and the stylist 10%, so I do that out of habit.

MsSquiz · 21/09/2018 18:15

I always give them £5 each.

My beauty appointments usually consist of multiple treatments (never in the salon for less than 1.5 hours) and my hair cuts are always done by the same stylist (who also washes my hair)

My DM always worked in the service industry (either bar, waitress or hair and beauty) and taught me to tip for good service, so that is what I do

GetOffTheTableMabel · 21/09/2018 18:15

I don’t tip the salon owner who cuts my hair but I tip the colourist. Similarly I tip for waxing etc in the beauty salon unless I have the salon owner (which occasionally happens). I don’t tip with coins so depending on what I’ve had done, it’ll be £5 or £10. I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary but I really value the service I receive and want to say thank you.

RoboticSealpup · 21/09/2018 18:15

No.

How does that work, Xiaoxiong? Do you ask the price beforehand and make sure you have exact cash to divide into 5 and 10%? Our do you add it to your card payment and tell them how to divide it? Sounds like a right kerfuffle.

RoboticSealpup · 21/09/2018 18:17

Then again, most hairdressers are terrible and only seem to be able to cut one style which they give to everyone regardless of what they ask for.

Chocolateismyvice · 21/09/2018 18:20

Nope. I'm a part time carer with a young child. They earn more than me, probably!

Also, I really don't get tipping over here. That why we have a national minimum wage. I don't get tipped by by clients, and I damn well do my job well, sometimes stay over time, go above and beyond, etc. I do my job and get paid a wage. Why is it okay to tip hairdressers, waiters, etc, but not carers, bus drivers, shop assistants, etc?

LoveAGoodChat · 21/09/2018 18:22

No, they charge enough as it is without forking out more money for the tips

TomHardysNextWife · 21/09/2018 18:23

See I always feel really guilty about this but my colour and cut costs me well over £100 every 8 weeks and I begrudge paying that let alone adding £10 on top as a thank you!! So I only usually tip at Christmas, when you know they're working extra hard/longer hours.

I feel it's a slippery slope, tbh. No one ever tips me for getting their paperwork right at work........... Sad

eco1636 · 21/09/2018 18:24

I quite often tip, but not a lot.

Huntlybyelection · 21/09/2018 18:25

If I'm paying cash then I sometimes tell them to keep the change. By card I don't tip.

I get a frightwig scarecut most times anyway.so it never makes much of a difference (different stylists, different salons before I get asked)

Whatsthisbear · 21/09/2018 18:46

I tip my hairdresser 20% but give her double at Christmas because she gives a fantastic cut & the lady that waxes my eyebrows -different location- gets 15% but I sort of begrudge that and feel I have to give something because as she’s calling me through her previous client is pressing a tip in her hand so feel i would look mean if i don’t

Darkestnight · 21/09/2018 18:51

Nope she charges enough for a hair cut

CrabbyPatty · 21/09/2018 18:52

No, but I don't really tip full stop.

delphguelph · 21/09/2018 18:54

Always tip a fiver

delphguelph · 21/09/2018 18:54

Live abroad and its only £12 anyway for the haircut though

Hellywelly10 · 21/09/2018 18:58

My current hairdressor is cheap so i tip because i want to keep on her good side as shes also very busy.

PhilomenaButterfly · 21/09/2018 19:01

Yes I do. We live 2 doors down from the barber's where DS2 gets his hair cut. I've always been pleased with his hair, it would be churlish not to tip them.

Sundance2741 · 21/09/2018 19:03

No, though I feel aware I'm not. I haven't seen many people do this nowadays. Years and years ago I went to a salon with a tin cash box with lots of of coin slots each labelled with the stylists name. Then it was hard not to put something in. But I think the whole idea of tipping is outdated. Why don't places just charge what they need to cover all overheads and pay staff appropriately? (They probably do in most cases). With card payments it gets silly. In restaurants I only ever leave tips in cash - on the grounds I can't rely on rhe boss taking off the 'tip" from a card to give to the waiter/ waiteess.
