To ask if you tip in a salon?

I never tip a stylist in a salon or a beautician after a wax, etc. Am I wrong? DM recently told me I should be giving them at least a fiver on every visit, but I feel a bit uncomfortable doing that. I feel that the prices are quite high in salons these days anyway, but there’s always an awkward silence after I’ve paid as if they expect more. Should I be tipping?

I live in the land of tipping so yes always and at least 15%, 20% if they’ve done an exceptionally good job. In the UK I tip if the trainee washes my hair and they get £5, wouldn’t tip the stylist though.

Jayfee · 21/09/2018 19:08

Nooooo!

helacells · 21/09/2018 19:10

Yes always and always have done either five or ten. Also tip for waxing facials and nails. Can't believe people who don't, how stingy!

salopek · 21/09/2018 19:16

No. My hair costs about £130 every 6 weeks, that's more than enough.

However I do give my hairdresser £20 in an envelope at Christmas.

Justkeeprollingalong · 21/09/2018 19:20

Why is it stingy @helacells? Beauticians and stylists will be earning way more than minimum wage, especially the self- employed. Certainly more than my £8 an hour and more than the shop assistants and clerical workers who also give you a good service.

KirbyTheFirst · 21/09/2018 19:20

God yes

The poor 18 year old who has to wax my post 4DC vajayjay gets a whopping great tip!

applecatchers36 · 21/09/2018 19:22

Yes always tip my hairdresser

Ninoo25 · 21/09/2018 19:27

My salon only take cash. I always tip, but I round up to the nearest £5, so they’re not getting much really

butlerswharf · 21/09/2018 19:33

I pay £70 for a trim. I don't tip him. He's doing ok! Grin

MacosieAsunter · 21/09/2018 19:58

Yes, 10%, ditto the manicurist
also round up cab fares to the nearest tenner
over pay the babysitter

greendale17 · 21/09/2018 20:03

No I never do.

gilmoregal · 21/09/2018 20:23

No I don't tip. I do always take a card and m&s biscuits into salon over Christmas though.

Whatsnewwithyou · 21/09/2018 20:27

Yes, never occurred to me not to, I thought it was expected until reading this thread (as I grew up in America). I give £5.

Tistheseason17 · 21/09/2018 20:27

No. They charge plenty so I'm not feeling guilty.

DemocracyDiesInDarkness · 21/09/2018 20:27

At £100 for a cut and colour, nope, I don't.

Delatron · 21/09/2018 20:28

I pay about £130 for a cut and colour. That’s plenty and I find it awkward handing over ££.
It’s normally 50/50 on these posts so assume similar in real life. Therefore I don’t feel too bad.

RepealRepealRepeal · 21/09/2018 20:34

It depends. If I feel the service deserves it then I'll tip. I never tipped my last salon, because the cut and colour was never right, but I tip my new one.

DuggeesWoggle · 21/09/2018 20:36

No I don't tip, it costs me £38 for a cut & blow dry which I think is quite a lot, been about £80-90 for a cut & colour recently which is eye wateringly expensive on my meagre wages. If I have a cut near Christmas I'll buy her a bottle of fizz but otherwise nope.

MaisyPops · 21/09/2018 20:36

I don't tip.
I pay a fair price for the services I use.

Happygummibear · 21/09/2018 20:37

I put £5 Christmas card... and hair dresser went on mat leave so bought a little gift for her and baby.....

Couldn't afford to tip every time

dangermouseisace · 21/09/2018 20:38

I do, if I’m happy with the service. For kids cuts too, usually 10-15%. However, the hairdressers/barbers are better value than many on here eg my cut and colour is £77, daughter gets wash, cut and dry for £10.

Doobigetta · 21/09/2018 20:38

My hairdressers are self employed and charge a good £50/hour, I think that lifts them safely out of the exploited and underpaid bracket. So no, no more than I’d tip a solicitor.

TheFluffyHippo · 21/09/2018 20:41

I tip my hairdresser generously because he’s amazing and he really goes the extra mile (or maybe that’s because I tip him well!)

It’s the done thing in my nail salon that everyone tips a pound regardless of what they’re getting done. An odd system but it works.

I don’t tip when I get my brows waxed because the salon owner does it and it’s a funny price. It’s £7.50 so rounding up to £8 seems a bit stingy but if I round up to £8.50 or £9, I feel like I might as well go the whole hog and tip the £2.50 to make it ten. But then I’ll have tipped a third of the price. I know I’m overthinking this but it’s easier to just not tip (even though I then feel awkward about not doing so)

Beesandfrogsandfleas · 21/09/2018 20:43

I do tip usually but only because I feel embarrassed not to - then I worry that I did it wrong and feel embarrassed about that too!

Beesandfrogsandfleas · 21/09/2018 20:44

...and the person who cuts my hair owns the salon and earns more than me, and the one who washes it is surly and rugs so I don’t want to.
