To ask if you tip in a salon?

I never tip a stylist in a salon or a beautician after a wax, etc. Am I wrong? DM recently told me I should be giving them at least a fiver on every visit, but I feel a bit uncomfortable doing that. I feel that the prices are quite high in salons these days anyway, but there’s always an awkward silence after I’ve paid as if they expect more. Should I be tipping?

I usually tip a couple of pounds to the hairdresser and the same for the lady who waxed my eyebrows. If 10 clients a day did that, it would make a nice difference to their take home pay and I’m pretty sure that hairdressers and beauticians don’t earn a great deal of money, unless they own the place.

nope! tipping is a farce, the only reason people do it is because of the wage in America is disgusting, so i would absolutely do it abroad to avoid insulting cultures, but in England we have a minimum wage for a reason! You wouldn't tip a shop assistant so why tip a waitress/nail lady? they are probably earning the same!

Rezie · 25/09/2018 12:07

ike what? Can you not just say you don't want it and don't want to pay for it?

For the salons I've visited the price includes wash, blowdry, massage, tea etc. I can decline but I would still pay the same. These are the "minimum" prices. I'm looking for a local barber that will cut womens hair so I can just get a basic haircut.

I’m in the US, so it’s part of the culture. I give the trainee who washes my hair $10 and the stylist twenty percent. I tip the cost of an extra haircut at Christmas.

Zigazagazoo · 25/09/2018 12:29

Beauticians and stylists will be earning way more than minimum wage, especially the self- employed. Certainly more than my £8 an hour
My friend has a worked in a salon for 12 years. She’s excellent at what she does. She was earning £7.75 an hour. She has finally told her boss where to stick it and is now renting a room in a salon where she will be earning more but she has to give 50% of her earnings to the owner as rent. Products are included.

Zigazagazoo · 25/09/2018 12:31

Sorry £7.85

mathanxiety · 25/09/2018 20:46

Always. The amount depends on how happy I am with the end result. But I am in the US and tipping is de rigeur here.

LittleKitty1985 · 25/09/2018 23:47

Yes, but only a couple of quid. I always tip waitresses too; I was one for years so I know how much tips mean to them!

steff13 · 25/09/2018 23:49

$10 for a cut, $20 for cut + color, $10 for my eyelashes.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 25/09/2018 23:49

I always tip for good service

What is the wage for a hair stylist in the US?

happymummy12345 · 26/09/2018 00:10

If I had more money then I would. But I don't work as I'm a full time mum. My husband works full time.
I'm a regular customer, get my nails done every fortnight and my eyebrows done when they need doing, every 3 weeks usually, they're a bit random with when they need to be done. So they get plenty from me.

mathanxiety · 26/09/2018 02:50

Minimum wage, Steff, at most walk in places, and not much more at places you have to set an appointment for. You also get arrangements where a hairdresser will rent a chair at a salon and pay a percentage of their take to the salon owner on top of paying self employment tax.

steff13 · 26/09/2018 03:21

Actually, in my state the average is about $25K a year. That's about $12/hour, so more than minimum wage.

steff13 · 26/09/2018 03:22

What do salons in the UK pay?

MrsCatE · 26/09/2018 03:37

I give hairdresser £10 tip for colour and highlights every 2-3 months; also give presents / Christmas bonus. Tip person who does manicure and pedicure £5. Also go to exceedingly expensive facialist; however, due to her ministrations, down to two visits a year. She and I find tips embarrassing so I take a little thank you present that I'll know she'll like.

lelepond · 26/09/2018 03:52

Literally never, at £60 it's overpriced as it is. They charge me extra for having long, thick hair.

A580Hojas · 26/09/2018 03:57

I pay £50 for a trim and blow dry which usually takes about 30 to 40 minutes, so I don't tip. Always leave a pound or two for the girls who wash my hair and bring me a coffee though.

Do men tip at the barbers? I doubt it. Will ask dh tomorrow.

EscapeToTheMoon · 26/09/2018 07:24

I just don’t get this tipping business. Why? They get paid a wage. Mire than enough.

EscapeToTheMoon · 26/09/2018 07:25

£50 for a trim and a blow dry?😨 bloodyhell.
